  1. Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue."
  2. Resonance Records put out a 10" LP of live recordings from Slug's Saloon for Record Store Day, and they'll be part of a forthcoming two-CD set:
  3. Happy birthday, sheldonm! Hope we can get together for lunch soon! I picked up both of those Wes Montgomery 10" LPs at Luna on Record Store Day.
  4. A recent Night Lights show now up for online listening, revisiting the historic New York City nightclub of the 1950s and early 60s, featuring broadcasts and recordings by Charlie Parker, Bill Evans, Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Maynard Ferguson, and more: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/jazz-corner-world-live-birdland/
  5. I'm going to enjoy the Yanks' first-place position atop the AL East while it lasts... Good to see more strong starts from Tanaka and Pineda today.
  6. Happy birthday, Allen... the jazz world and the Organissimo forum are far richer places for your presence in them!
  7. Good debut from Tanaka tonight for the Yanks (well, after giving up a home run to his first MLB batter--former Yankee Melky Cabrera)--and a nice surprise so far in the form of Solarte.
  8. A longtime fan here who hasn't seen him much in recent years simply because I've watched little television now for a long time--and when I have checked in with late-evening shows, it's generally been Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert (rumored possible replacement today, without the "Colbert" character), or Craig Ferguson. But watching Letterman every night was practically de rigeur when I was a student at IU living in the dorms my freshman and sophomore year in the mid-1980s. I also remember watching the brief daytime show a few times when I was home sick from school at the start of the 1980s. He was fresh, offbeat, and sarcastic--cool in a goofy kind of way, one of the first nerds to be hip, long before that became a trend. Oh, and hey, he's from Indiana (don't hold it against him). Used to be a weatherman around these parts.
  9. Is this a complete list of all of the Black Saint/Soul Note box-sets that have been released so far? http://www.camjazz.com/boxsets.html?p=1
  10. I've touted them before (and full disclosure--they do production support for Night Lights, but I was a fan of them before they started doing that, and they really are an outstanding record store), but if you're passing through Bloomington, Indiana, be sure to check out Landlocked Music, just off the downtown square: http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ In Indianapolis, Luna Music remains an excellent record store as well: http://www.lunamusic.net/ They're both part of the the Alliance of Independent Media Stores, which provides a handy list of members on its website: http://thealliancerocks.com/
  11. The Herbie Blue Note is one of my all-time faves as well... I pull it out about once a year and listen to it all the way through. Right now:
  12. Great news--I've forwarded it to a number of my Indiana jazz friends.
  13. Just bought it--very timely, as I'm putting together a Night Lights show about Birdland recordings this very week. The .wav files certainly sound better than my old ESP discs, based on the first several tracks that I've listened to... thanks for the heads-up about that, Eric.

    Art Farmer

How is HOMECOMING? Recorded 1971, with Jimmy Heath, Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, Billy Higgins, and a conga player (James Forman-Mtume) and extra percussionist (Warren Smith). Also, any recs re: the recent Soul Note box-set?
  15. Great topic, TTK. Would Charles Mingus' MODERN JAZZ SYMPOSIUM qualify, with "Scenes of the City" and "New York Sketchbook" among its tracks? There's also Ralph Burns' NEW YORK'S A SONG and Stan Kenton and Bob Graettinger's CITY OF GLASS... and would Gordon Jenkins' MANHATTAN TOWER count as well?
  16. Happy birthday, JT--long may you roll!
  17. Jack McDuff, TOUGH 'DUFF (with Jimmy Forrest and Lem Winchester--Winchester fans, take note!), $5.99: http://www.amazon.com/Tough-Duff-Jack-Mcduff/dp/B000000YI7/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1393968041&sr=1-1&keywords=jack+mcduff+tough
  18. The McGhee is already listed on Amazon for May 20. The Chubby Jackson isn't showing up there yet; I'm guessing from Noal's note that we'll be seeing it sometime later this year.
  19. Via Steven Cerra's blog, this from Noal Cohen:
  20. Thanks much, JT! I just heard back from Mona, who confirms that the CD series will run to 24 volumes, and that V. 18 will be released in May, in conjunction with the Duke Ellington conference in Amsterdam.
  21. Just ordered mine from Amazon US yesterday, so hopefully I'll have it soon as well. Weren't there originally 24 2-LP sets in the series that was released in the 1980s? I think the goal is to re-release them all as 2-CD sets, with extra material being added to each release. I'll drop a line to Mona at Storyville and see what she says.
  22. I couldn't find a previous thread for such a topic (single jazz CDs), but if one already exists, moderators, please merge. Zoot Sims, I WISH I WERE TWINS, $4.31 at Amazon right now: http://www.amazon.com/I-Wish-Were-Twins/dp/B00000605N/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1392154397&sr=1-1&keywords=zoot+sims+i+wish
  23. Any other Brackeen recommendations?
  24. Shocking and sad, and yes, Jsngry, "crazy" was one of the first words that sprang to my mind as well. Probably my favorite actor and about my age. A number of the artists I've admired from my own generation have died young, or relatively young--David Foster Wallace, Elliott Smith, Kurt Cobain, River Phoenix, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and now Hoffman. They all had substance-abuse problems, which contributed directly or indirectly to the death in every instance except for Wallace and Smith (who were both sober when they killed themselves).
