  1. Thanks for the link. I'm definitely picking this one up. We could do a whole thread on jazz interpretations of folk music Jim Hall did a fantastic LP with clarinetist Bill Smith, with Shelly Manne on folk themes. John Benson Brooks also did a nice one, though I liked his "Alabama Concerto" more. Scgim, you might be interested in this Night Lights show I did several years ago: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/jazz-goes-folk/
  2. Not sure if this was ever a Groove Merchant release, but how is Joe Williams' HAVING THE BLUES UNDER A EUROPEAN SKY?
  3. I wonder if Mosaic might ever tackle the late 1920s Ellington sides--at least the ones that are currently under Universal and Sony control.
  4. Both excellent sets... wouldn't want to be without 'em. I'd like to revisit the Gillespie sides in particular sometime soon.
  5. It's a wonderful novel, TTK... I finally finished reading it a couple of weeks ago. Did Chabon do some sort of suggested soundtrack listing for the novel anywhere online?
  6. KU--I think all of the discographical info will be up on the Mosaic site pretty soon, but in addition to the leader dates, ZODIAC, RHYTHM X, and SUPER BASS, it will also include Pharoah Sanders' IZIPHO ZAM and Ed Blackwell's SHADES OF EDWARD BLACKWELL (w/Don Cherry and Wilbur Ware, previously unreleased). Thar's gold in them thar 70s!!
  7. Well, considering the update, the list I put up above (which would only fill 4 or maybe 5 discs anyway) is outdated and it seems sideman-sessions not included. But I'm really looking forward to getting proper editions of the Payne and Brackeen albums! Since Ware is mentioned ... that means the CD that the Wilbur Ware Institute put out recently will be included as well, I assume? Yes.
  8. Updated with considerable clarification--the set will include both Jordan's recordings as a leader and as a producer for a late-1960s run of recordings that he referred to as "The Dolphy Series": http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/mosaic-records-release-clifford-jordan-set/
  9. Hey all, I've just posted some news from Mosaic about a forthcoming Clifford Jordan set on the Night Lights site: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/mosaic-records-release-clifford-jordan-set/
  10. Picked up the original Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz (6 LPs with booklet by Martin Williams) for $10 at Luna in Indianapolis. I'm a happy man...
  11. Dick Martin is the MC for the first five cuts on the 90th Floor Records release CIRCA 1960, which includes several recordings of the North Texas State Laboratory Dance Band A (featuring a young Marvin Stamm on trumpet). You can't hear him very well, but he's there, for any Dick Martin fans out there (and the CD itself is an interesting snapshot of a certain aspect of the Texas jazz scene at the time... four tracks here for fans of vocalist Ann Richards as well). http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=18060#.Uiiw2H-aZjg
  12. Up for Gerald Wilson's 95th birthday! http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/last-of-the-lions-gerald-wilson/
  13. Up for Mr. Silver's birthday: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/the-horace-silver-songbook/
  14. Wayne Wallace mentioned this book just yesterday when I had him on the show.
  15. HBJ, for some early Mabern (some of which are leader dates), here's a Night Lights show I did a couple years back: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/miles-memphis-harold-mabern/
  16. We re-aired "Late Pee Wee: Pee Wee Russell In The 1960s" this past week; it remains archived for online listening: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/late-pee-wee/
  17. Wow! I've been wanting to do a Duke Pearson big band show for years... glad I still hadn't gotten around to it. Can't wait to hear this.
  18. Nice video clip of Ichiro Suzuki getting his 4000th hit the other night: http://wapc.mlb.com/nyy/play/?content_id=29917839&query=suzuki After the game he said he was surprised and moved when his teammates all came out to congratulate him, and you can see that in the way he smiles as he's getting hugged. I also enjoyed the second shot you see of Blue Jays second baseman Munenori Kawasaki, who has looked up to Suzuki as a role model.
  19. A special tribute to Marian McPartland on "Just You and Me" right now: http://indianapublicmedia.org/radio/ You can click on the "Listen live" link on the righthand side of the page.
  20. Rooster--very sarcastic/inside-joke post on my part. Iirc the Blue Note Europe BB sank within months of launching...
  21. So for now, Organissimo's the last one standing of the Big Three (Big O, JC, and AAJ). Oh wait, I forgot... there's always the Blue Note Europe Bulletin Board!
  22. The Goldsher book is excellent, but it's actually a sort of encyclopedia covering all of the musicians who played in the Messengers over the years... invaluable in that respect, but not really a Blakey biography. Like jlhoots I haven't read the Gourse. Has it ever been established whether Blakey actually went to Africa in the late 1940s or not?
  23. Happy birthday to Mr. Thornhill--this show remains archived for online listening: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/claude-thornhill-godfather-cool/
  24. Hope you're enjoying your vacation, Larry. I'd be curious to hear what it was like for you to be offline for nearly two weeks. A couple of years ago my hard-drive crashed, leaving me without computer access for a weekend or two, and I found the experience rather peaceful.
