  1. Great list--especially glad to see John Carter included.
  2. It's on a Columbia LP called Almost Forgotten. Evidently part of a longer recording session, but I'm not sure the rest of it has surfaced anywhere.
  3. Here's another episode from Jazz Crossroads Of America, the NEA-grant series that Night Lights did on the history of Indiana jazz. This program delves into the world of Indiana Avenue, the "main stem" in mid-20th century Indianapolis that played a role in the rise of musicians such as J.J. Johnson, Freddie Hubbard, Wes Montgomery, and David Baker: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/indiana-avenue-black-boulevard-jazz/
  4. A worthy job for a very worthy person--congratulations, RT!
  5. As was mentioned several times on this board there'll be no more Selects. I missed that news ... bummer. I miss the Mosaic Singles series as well. I have just about all of the 32 Jazz Shaw reissues, but I'll definitely be picking up the Mosaic set.
  6. Some brief sightings of Freddie Webster here as well!
  7. We've been re-airing last year's NEA grant series Jazz Crossroads of America, a special four-part Night Lights look at the history of Indiana jazz. Here's the first episode, "Gennett Days: Hot Jazz From The Heartland," which includes interviews with Gennett historian Rick Kennedy and Indiana jazz historian Duncan Schiedt, as well as a slew of 1920s jazz: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/gennett-days-hot-jazz-heartland/
  8. A lot of material here that I've never heard before (I think the Hep is the only CD that I have that covers this era, plus an old Sony single-disc compilation), and it's renewing my appreciation for Hines as a pianist as well. Very glad they did this one.
  9. Up for the 75th anniversary of Freddie Hubbard's birth today--a recent Night Lights show, "Freddie Hubbard: The CTI Years": http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/freddie-hubbard-cti-years/ You can also listen to the broadcast we did about Hubbard the day after his death, which included an interview with David Baker and music from Hubbard's teenage group the Jazz Contemporaries: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/freddie-hubbard-tribute-david-baker/
  10. A recent Night Lights show, up for online listening: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/jazz-women-1940s/
  11. Mark, do you have this CD? http://www.amazon.com/Downtown-Blues-John-Von-Ohlen/dp/B00000K1G0/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1365122114&sr=1-1&keywords=von+ohlen+allee
  12. Apologies, somehow overlooked the previous thread--moderators, please delete this one.
  13. Death notice in the Olympian: http://www.theolympian.com/2013/03/27/2479348/death-notices-for-march-27.html
  14. Jazz historian Ted Gioia was recently a guest on Night Lights, discussing his new book The Jazz Standards. You can listen to the program on the Night Lights website: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/jazz-standards-ted-gioia/
  15. Still hoping that Mosaic does a DKE 1947-52 Columbia set. I've also thought about e-mailing them to suggest a set of the 1943 Hurricane broadcasts.
  16. An amazing school indeed... I'm sure that Mark Stryker will have something to add to this conversation. Is DuSable High still open in Chicago? Crispus Attucks is the equivalent school in Indianapolis; there was a similar school in Los Angeles, I think, but I can't recall it right now. Hopefully somebody will eventually write a well-researched history of the black schools and teachers that provided such a good grounding for many of the jazz artists that we love and admire from the mid-20th century scene.
  17. Have an excellent day, Michael... hope to see you again in Bloomington sometime.
  18. When I first saw this thread I thought it was Aloc's way of saying that we should more frequently celebrate the achievements of elderly jazz musicians while they're still with us.
  19. Really digging his most recent release, BE GOOD.. haven't heard his 2010 debut WATER. Anybody else here checked him out?
  20. Much better-known than the above dates, but for those interested in hearing Nichols in a more tradional-jazz context: http://www.amazon.co...omas mainstream You can hear his solo on Thomas' "Blues Baby" around the 30:00-32:30 mark in this Night Lights show: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/herbie-nichols-world/
  21. Thanks for the heads-up, Moms--tuned in right now. Reece is evidently at work on an autobiography?
  22. Disc 8 of the Hawk Mosaic and preparing to break open the Mingus.
  23. Thanks, Bruce--I dig your THIRD MAN avatar!
  24. We are re-airing "Benny Goodman's Interlude In Bop" this week, and it remains archived for online listening: http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/bennys-bop-benny-goodman-late-1940s/ Next week on Night Lights: "Have Yourself a Very Quiet Christmas."
  25. Thanks belatedly for the birthday wishes--I miss youse guys and this joint. Hoping, now that things have settled down a bit into a more regular routine in my new life, to be more active on the board in the coming year. Way too much wisdom and fun to be had here!
