Happy birthday, Allen... the jazz world and the Organissimo forum are far richer places for your presence in them! -
David Letterman announces his retirement in 2015
ghost of miles replied to duaneiac's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
A longtime fan here who hasn't seen him much in recent years simply because I've watched little television now for a long time--and when I have checked in with late-evening shows, it's generally been Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert (rumored possible replacement today, without the "Colbert" character), or Craig Ferguson. But watching Letterman every night was practically de rigeur when I was a student at IU living in the dorms my freshman and sophomore year in the mid-1980s. I also remember watching the brief daytime show a few times when I was home sick from school at the start of the 1980s. He was fresh, offbeat, and sarcastic--cool in a goofy kind of way, one of the first nerds to be hip, long before that became a trend. Oh, and hey, he's from Indiana (don't hold it against him). Used to be a weatherman around these parts. -
Black Saint/Soul Note Box Sets
ghost of miles replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Is this a complete list of all of the Black Saint/Soul Note box-sets that have been released so far? http://www.camjazz.com/boxsets.html?p=1 -
I've touted them before (and full disclosure--they do production support for Night Lights, but I was a fan of them before they started doing that, and they really are an outstanding record store), but if you're passing through Bloomington, Indiana, be sure to check out Landlocked Music, just off the downtown square: http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ In Indianapolis, Luna Music remains an excellent record store as well: http://www.lunamusic.net/ They're both part of the the Alliance of Independent Media Stores, which provides a handy list of members on its website: http://thealliancerocks.com/

Great news--I've forwarded it to a number of my Indiana jazz friends.

Complete Bud Powell Blue Note/Roost and Verve
ghost of miles replied to BeBop's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just bought it--very timely, as I'm putting together a Night Lights show about Birdland recordings this very week. The .wav files certainly sound better than my old ESP discs, based on the first several tracks that I've listened to... thanks for the heads-up about that, Eric. -
How is HOMECOMING? Recorded 1971, with Jimmy Heath, Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, Billy Higgins, and a conga player (James Forman-Mtume) and extra percussionist (Warren Smith). Also, any recs re: the recent Soul Note box-set?

Another board member is helping me out with this... thanks much, all! -
Whoops--thanks, David. I tried to Google for ECM threads on Organissimo but didn't have much luck with the returns... moderators, please delete this?

http://mad.ly/ed1984 The Rivers and Burton in particular interest me.

If anybody on the board has a copy of this CD, could he or she contact me via PM or email? I'm trying to put together a Flory tribute for the "Jazz From Indiana" edition of my weekday afternoon show next Thursday and am hoping to use some of the music from this collection. Many thanks in advance for any assistance that you can provide.

The McGhee is already listed on Amazon for May 20. The Chubby Jackson isn't showing up there yet; I'm guessing from Noal's note that we'll be seeing it sometime later this year.

Via Steven Cerra's blog, this from Noal Cohen:

Thanks much, JT! I just heard back from Mona, who confirms that the CD series will run to 24 volumes, and that V. 18 will be released in May, in conjunction with the Duke Ellington conference in Amsterdam.

Just ordered mine from Amazon US yesterday, so hopefully I'll have it soon as well. Weren't there originally 24 2-LP sets in the series that was released in the 1980s? I think the goal is to re-release them all as 2-CD sets, with extra material being added to each release. I'll drop a line to Mona at Storyville and see what she says.

I couldn't find a previous thread for such a topic (single jazz CDs), but if one already exists, moderators, please merge. Zoot Sims, I WISH I WERE TWINS, $4.31 at Amazon right now: http://www.amazon.com/I-Wish-Were-Twins/dp/B00000605N/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1392154397&sr=1-1&keywords=zoot+sims+i+wish
