  1. I'm about 2/3 of the way through, and like you, David, I'm finding the sections on Johnson very interesting (reading the chapter about "Harlem Symphony" right now...man, I'd love to hear that 1939 transcription performance!). Some of the Ellington-related info is new to me as well (and I really need to track down the Mark Tucker article he refers to, "Genesis," on the sources of BLACK, BROWN AND BEIGE). Hoping to do a write-up for the Night Lights blog over the weekend.
  2. Thanks for the update--glad to hear that this book's still happening.
  3. A true cause for celebration. Thanks for everything you've given us--the music, this board, your friendship...none of them small things in the grand scheme of reckoning.
  4. Last Friday night I did an Afterglow program about America in the year of 1945 that includes news clips, interviews with historian Jim Madison and some homefront civilians, and music from Bing Crosby, Woody Herman, Thelma Carpenter, Frank Sinatra with Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and more. I tried to focus somewhat on the ordeals, losses and uncertainties of that year, as well as the more victorious aspects. It's now archived for online holiday listening--hope any who happen to tune in enjoy. The Year We Won the War: 1945
  5. Thanks much, Aloc--it's archived, will also be on Blue Lake tonight at 10. The previous shows: Turn Out the Stars Turn Out the Stars II Hoping I can find enough material to do another one next year--I suppose I could simply play the entirety of Miles' "He Loved Him Madly"...
  6. What with Toronto losing today as well, it's quite a logjam in the AL East!
  7. The ones that came the other day: the new Louis Armstrong Decca and the Andrew Hill solo Select.
  8. Cliff, I think Marc Myers over at Jazzwax is of the same mind as you on this one.
  9. What cracks me up are the stories about professional/biz folks tweeting really unflattering, negative things: What are you doing? What are you doing right now?
  10. But Dan, on the strength of last night's performance he lowered his ERA to 25.00!
  11. Only want to add that I love this place--I mean, really love it--and have developed a fairly deep/profound admiration, respect, and affection for a large number of folks here. And while Larry, Jsngry, and Chuck certainly don't need me to defend them, they are all exceptionally decent people and have contributed invaluable reflections, speculations, remembrances and thoughts to this board. (Plus they're plenty tough and abhor the scent of b.s., in the morning and pretty much any other time of day or night.) I, too, get bummed when members decide they need to leave, either temporarily or permanently, but at a certain point BFD, it's not a sign of board apocalypse and you can still stay in touch with them quite easily in the age of e-mail/Facebook/etc.
  12. In honor of Memorial Day weekend, another Night Lights program featuring musical remembrances of departed musicians: Turn Out the Stars V. III Tributes to John Coltrane, Billy Strayhorn, Wes Montgomery, and more--even one for Ernie Henry. A safe and happy holiday weekend to all, David
  13. I ordered the set on Tuesday (aware of the error mentioned here) and got it last night, so evidently they were still shipping them out earlier in the week. I'll probably call just to make sure that I'm on the list for getting a corrected disc 1--but that aside, this set is a joy, with Dan Morgenstern's notes certainly contributing in that regard.
  14. I love this board, but the Getz thread--what it turned into, at any rate--was the first one that ever actually sickened me and made me feel ashamed of this place. Y'know, that's one strike out of however many thousands of threads we've had, and this board is so, so much better than any other jazz discussion forum out there, and polices itself pretty well most of the time. Life's full of unpleasantness and unpleasant stories, gotta be adult if you want the frank, open conversations, but there was something about that Getz thread that was just utterly repulsive. As a board member I'd probably vote to let it stand, but as a personally invested moderator who runs this place, I'd not want it associated with me or my band. That said, I'd really hate to see the board come crashing down over an out-of-control topic...for a sense of proportion, just look at ALL of the active threads on any given day here. Hate to see so much focus on the handful that have gone over the line. That's my piece and I'd much prefer to move on as well.
  15. Thanks much for the tip, Mark--I'll definitely be checking this out!
  16. I heard a rumor that the announcements were all lost in a devastating warehouse fire...we're going to have to make do with second-generation hand-me-down dubs from now on.
  17. Sirius XM reports drop in subscribers
  18. Yes--it's sitting on my desk...brought it to work today so that I could listen to it again!
  19. Great date! Ordered this after the thread hipped me to it and have already listened to it twice in the past few hours.
  20. His centennial's coming up at the end of the month. I've got a Night Lights show in the pipeline that covers his foray into bop (1948-49)...lots of Wardell Gray in that one!
  21. Featuring his 1980-82 recordings with Art Blakey, Chico Freeman, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter--now archived for online listening: Young Wynton: Early Marsalis ...and now donning my flame-resistant web-surfing gear. Next week: "Turn Out the Stars, V. 3." More jazz tributes to departed musicians.
  22. Yeah, just heard about this from David Baker a couple of hours ago. Very sad news, even if not entirely unexpected. Almost all of the Indiana Avenue guys from the 1940s/50s are gone now.
  23. I was really skeptical about this project when I first heard of it, but everybody's glowing notices have gotten me intrigued--will probably go see it this weekend. On another note, is anybody aware of any recordings that Nichelle Nichols (original Uhura) might have made w/Ellington during her time with him in the 1950s? I don't think there are any studio sides, but a programmer friend of mine was looking for something...I figure his best chance is to find an airshot somewhere.
