"Last of the Lions: Gerald Wilson"
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Glad that you enjoyed it, Z and BillF. Yeah, the 1940s material holds up really well--I really recommend tracking down both of those Classics releases if you're into it. Again, there was a lot more music I wish I could've somehow fitted into the show... -
NPR's Jazz Profiles Podcast on iTunes
ghost of miles replied to Soul Stream's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
But our legal understanding/interpretation down here, LV, is that even if the music is faded under a voice or otherwise drops down to a bed, it's still within the zone of accountability if you can hear it at all. Thus anything we produce that is podcast--some of our local arts segments, for example--has to observe a one-minute limit for music tracks, whether or not they're running in part as bed. It is a good show and I'm sorry to hear that it's going away--that was the rumor earlier this year, but I hadn't seen any confirmation lately. -
NPR's Jazz Profiles Podcast on iTunes

It's a good series--we air episodes occasionally on our weekday-afternoon jazz program. Are they still using musical excerpts longer than a minute? I envy them their legal ability to do a podcast. -
Claude Thornhill: The 1948 Transcription Performances
ghost of miles replied to medjuck's topic in Recommendations
I'll second (third? fourth?) Medjuck's rec on this one. I've got all of the Thornhill Heps, and this indeed might well be the best one. Cool that you're on a Thornhill kick, Medjuck--he grew up about 40 minutes away from here in Terre Haute. I'm planning to do some kind of special--Night Lights or otherwise--for his centenary next August. -
This past weekend we did a tribute show to bandleader Gerald Wilson, who turned 90 on Sept. 4. Focusing on his 1940s and 1960s big bands, it's now archived for online listening: Last of the Lions: Gerald Wilson

socializing cats--advice?
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks much, Nate. So far it's going OK--I've been introducing Amelie (new cat) very, very slowly to our most outgoing cat (Mabel). I think Amelie's becoming less inclined to go into a fighting defensive mode...yesterday she stopped following Mabel around when I told her to...of course, then Mabel reached back and bopped her on the head. Now I'm worried that I'll make Amelie into a pacifist and the other cats will pick on her! -
"The Horace Silver Songbook"

The Horace Silver Songbook is now archived. -
Just a heads-up for Chi-town listeners (and Internet as well)--WDCB picked up three individual programs and will be broadcasting them Monday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. CT: Cats Who Swing and Sing: Women Singer-Pianists of the 1940s and 50s 1959: Jazz's Vintage Year Porgy and Bess: the 1950s Jazz Revival Also, KUNV-Las Vegas will broadcast The Horace Silver Songbook Monday morning at 10 a.m. PT, on the eve of Silver's 80th birthday. The same program airs on regular Night Lights stations Blue Lake Public Radio tonight at 10 p.m. EST and KMHD-Portland, OR Monday evening at 8 p.m. PT. Happy Labor Day to all, David

The Horace Silver Songbook Horace Silver turns 80 on Tuesday, September 2, and Night Lights pays tribute to his compositions this week with performances by Art Blakey, Woody Herman, Art Farmer, Mark Murphy, Eddie Jefferson, Chet Baker, Ran Blake, and Silver himself. The program airs tonight at 11 p.m. EST on WFIU and will be archived for online listening Monday morning at the link above (which also includes a video of Silver performing "Senor Blues" in 1959). Next week: "Last of the Lions: Gerald Wilson."
-
Yeah, I've got it on the Night Lights links page. Kellen Yamanaka, a young jazz DJ I used to listen to on KKJZ, also helps put it together. Both he and Willis left the station after the big upheaval/ownership transition last year.

Greg was concerned about overlap between the Mosaic and the Bix Restored. IIRC the only overlap between Bix V. 1 and the Mosaic is disc 3 (of the Bix Restored)--which still has a couple of Victor cuts and the Jess Stacy Bix interpretations that are not found on the Mosaic.
-
I would recommend getting V. 1 and seeing how you like it. It covers the same period as the Milestone and the Indispensable and has very little overlap with the Mosaic (there's some on disc 3).

Interesting discussion that some might have already seen going on over at Rifftides: Bix Beiderbecke: Overrated?

"The Wayne Shorter Songbook"
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Big Al, thanks so much--really glad you liked it. Was there a music bed in that part? I don't remember putting one in there--I'll have to go back and check the show. At the start of the program (after the "Blue s a la Carte" opening tune), the bed was "Night Dreamer." The midpoint music bed was "Black Nile." Selecting the music was tough--so many good Wayne tunes, even when you narrow it down to 1960-1969. -

Up for a happy 75th... just archived the Night Lights show The Wayne Shorter Songbook.

Memo to George Lucas: Please stop!
ghost of miles replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think as in "Steven wants it to be fun, entertaining and full of cheeky charm + some emotional resonance, while I prefer to make it increasingly soul-less, CGI-dependent, and stiff from self-regard of its pop-culture legend." Or something like that. And I say that as one who saw and enjoyed CRYSTAL SKULLS--but after reading the Darabont script, thinking what could have been instead. (I think the Darabont, if filmed, would have been as good as LAST CRUSADE and not too far behind RAIDERS.) -
If anybody here has a copy of Miles Davis' ATMOSPHERE: LIVE IN TOKYO, released on the Four Beat label, could he or she drop me a PM? Many thanks in advance.

Memo to George Lucas: Please stop!
ghost of miles replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Big Al, did you read the Frank Darabont script that Lucas rejected for INDIANA JONES IV? Much, much better than what made it to the screen--Spielberg and Ford reportedly loved it, but George gave it the thumbs-down. He's said elsewhere recently (re: the Indy series), "Steven wants it to be what it was in the past--I want it to be something different for the future."
