  1. Kinda goes "hand in hand" w/playing air guitar, don't ya think? B)
  2. I could always delete it... my finger's in good shape from all the spam that I get!
  3. Yeah, I was hoping for more of the Rivers material. Another board member sent me dubs of at least one, maybe two other nights w/Rivers that weren't part of MILES IN TOKYO. So I have it, but still hoped to see it included... I haven't heard most of the other live music here, so I'm really looking forward to this collection.
  4. A very rough month indeed. Weirdly enough, I brought that Fathead Newman 32 Jazz set to work with me today... will spin it in lieu of Ray himself for now.
  5. Every city riots... it's a venerable American tradition! I was in one myself, Bloomington '87, when IU won the NCAA. Pretty friendly, though, as riots go--people were hugging cops, going "We won, we won!" The riot we had here several years ago when Knight was fired was a much less friendly affair.
  6. Haven't seen the film (will try to, upon your rec), but I must say that's one of the more eyecatching thread titles I've seen around these parts in awhile!
  7. How popular was the Vee Jay gospel material? I wish some of that would re-surface as well.
  8. Anybody heard the Blakey yet? I ordered it yesterday & probably won't get it till late next week...
  9. From BMG's "buy 1, get 3 free" deal (crusing towards the magic mark of 18 music points): Count Basie, AT NEWPORT (VME) Louis Armstrong, MEETS OSCAR PETERSON Dexter Gordon, ROUND MIDNIGHT General Public, ALL THE RAGE (indulging college-sophomore-year memories)
  10. New to clearance: Hank Mobley, STRAIGHT NO FILTER ($2.99). Cassandra Wilson, NEW MOON DAUGHTER ($3.99). Sonny Rollins, COMP. PRESTIGE RECORDINGS ($27.99, but they will nail you on shipping--tack on $20 more. Still a good price overall, though.)
  11. In the work mailbox today: Constant success shows us but one side of the world adversity brings out the reverse of the picture. Heaven lies about us in our infancy and the world begins lying about us pretty soon afterward. The advice of the elders to young men is very apt to be as unreal as a list of the hundred best books. I don't get acting jobs because of my looks. Whatever you do may seem insignificant, but it is most important that you do it. Acting is the perfect idiot's profession. Ability hits the mark where presumption overshoots and diffidence falls short. Until Ace Ventura, no actor had considered talking through his ass. The advice of the elders to young men is very apt to be as unreal as a list of the hundred best books. One can advise comfortably from a safe port. Ability will never catch up with the demand for it. Reason guides but a small part of man, and the rest obeys feeling, true or false, and passion, good or bad. Death twitches my ear. ''Live,'' he says, ''I am coming.'' Man cannot live by incompetence alone.
  12. DoubleM, PM'ed you re: the Tyner hold.
  13. Speaking of ES playing piano, here are some live solo recordings of him playing piano & singing: ESpiano From the 12.07.00 Club Quattro, Nagoya, Japan show.
  14. Still reading le Carre's SMILEY'S PEOPLE... also starting William Kenney's CHICAGO JAZZ: A CULTURAL HISTORY 1904-1930.
  15. This jazz-lovin' Christian liberal will miss you too, AB. Y'all come back now... ya hear?
  16. No further news on the album--as far as I know, it's still slated for autumn release. Speaking of autumn, here's a pic of Elliott from Autumn De Wilde's new website: More Elliott pictures by DeWilde (who shot the FIGURE 8 publicity photos) here. And there's an article on Elliott in the new music issue of The Believer, a wonderful literary/arts magazine.
  17. Still enjoying the Hackett (listened to most of the quartet sides last night) & really digging the Brookmeyer Select. Haven't cracked the New Orleans box yet--probably on Sunday afternoon (seems like a good time to listen to that genre).
  18. A tad rough but still a must-have for Elmo fans.
  19. Well, I'm just glad to see that it's your computer & not you that's on the fritz! I was about to start a "Where's Weizen?" thread...
  20. One that my work mailbox gets a lot: Hoffman, Govenment don't want me to sell UndergroundCD! Check Your spouse and staff Investigate Your Own CREDIT-HISTORY hacking someone PC! Disappear in your city fixture, window and stood.
  21. Thanks, Uncle Skid. I don't know if I'll have the time, but I'll let you know if I make my way down the road... Wasn't Aebersold part of the Lenox scene?
  22. Oh, man, that's sad. I have some vinyl of Reed's early 80's band (LIVE IN ITALY) w/Quine on guitar that's just great... He figures in most of the books I've read about the 70s NYC scene. Bummer.
  23. A wee bit of earlier discussion here.
