  1. Nice playing by Bob Berg on "Blue Trane" to be heard here:
  2. Sure enjoying this one (still trawling through my recent Steeplechase purchase from Tommy’s Jazz):
  3. That’s a great set. Right now:
  4. We re-aired Jazz Of All Trades: The Eclectic Andre Previn last week, and it remains archived for online listening.
  5. Thanks for the heads-up--unfamiliar with these two Burrell titles and would be curious to hear them.
  6. Hey Dan, I located the scan that IU has, but it's worse than what you currently have--sent you a PDF of the page anyway. Happy to help any time with searches that require academic portals.
  7. Dammit. I talked at length with him on the phone when I did the Night Lights show following the release of Soul Jazz, and felt fortunate to more directly experience the passion and grace that suffused everything he did. We carried Portraits In Blue for many years when the show was syndicated. Very sorry to read this news.
  8. Update that this release is being pushed back to July: >>Yesterday, after we announced the project, Resonance Records heard from the manufacturer that delays at the plant will result in the Roy Hargrove / Mulgrew Miller recording In Harmony being moved to a later release date. The album will now be released on the second Record Store Day, which is July 17, 2021 for the vinyl edition. The CD and digital edition will be released on July 23.<<
  9. Hey Brad, thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the program--I'll probably re-air it at some point. And I did find the book quite worthwhile. Lots of board discussion about it here as well.
  10. I'll definitely be checking this out. Via a marketing email I received today: >>I’m thrilled to be working with Resonance Records for the release of In Harmony, a stunning set of live performances by the late Roy Hargrove on trumpet and Mulgrew Miller on piano. The previously unreleased recordings from 2006 and 2007 will be available June 12 as a limited-edition 180-gram 2-LP Record Store Day exclusive and June 18th as a deluxe 2-CD and digital edition issued in coordination with the Hargrove and Miller Estates. “From the very first time I heard these recordings, I was immediately taken by the sheer virtuosity of these two masters’ ability to mesh with each other,” says Resonance Records Co-President and Co-Producer of In Harmony Zev Feldman. “They’re playing their hearts out. I personally find these to be some of the most daring and beautiful interpretations of classic jazz repertoire I’ve heard. It’s an honor for Resonance to be able to collaborate with the families of Roy Hargrove and Mulgrew Miller to bring this music to their many fans, and we thank them for the opportunity.” The first posthumous Hargrove release since the trumpeter’s untimely passing on November 2, 2018 at age 49, the release features an elaborate booklet with rare photos, an informative essay by Ted Panken, interviews and statements from Sonny Rollins, Christian McBride, Common, Ron Carter, Jon Batiste, Karriem Riggins, Keyon Harold, Ambrose Akinmusire, Chris Botti, Robert Glasper and others.<<
  11. Looking forward to hearing--saw Rahsaan and his brother Roland perform many times while they were studying here at IU.
  12. I think that was my first-ever CD of the Basie band live--though as Captain Howdy notes the sound is rough, I'm still quite partial to it. Too bad the set of 1944 broadcasts with Prez that Uptown (I think?) was supposedly preparing never came to pass. I know a couple of astute people who are familiar with said broadcasts have intimated that the performances are rather rote, apparently, but I'd still be happy to hear more of that band, less inspired or not. And Joe Medjuck is spot-on about the value of those Basie sides in Mosaic's Savory set.
  13. Thanks for the heads-up on this one as well, James. Do you know if the May 6 4 p.m. showing time is California time or EST?
  14. I guess I might have read or heard about this happening before (it surely has), but I'd never seen it till today:
  15. That was a very limited edition!
  16. Hey Jim, the copy I have is a 2012 Real Gone Music/ABKCO reissue that I picked up as part of an RGM bargain blowout sale a couple of years ago. Sound is quite good and decent reissue notes by Bret Primack. Discogs listing: New Sounds of Maynard Ferguson/Come Blow Your Horn
  17. Maybe he shoulda said Willie Mays? ... play ball! ⚾️
  18. The Joe Henderson set has sold out!! Damn.
  19. All true—as are the reports of her going down the Q rabbit hole, unfortunately. Strange stuff. Now playing:
  20. Very nice haul! The DeFranco/Clark is one of the last OOP sets I'm still in the hunt for, though I'm looking for it on CD. Over the years I managed to pick up both Commodore V. 1 and 2 for around $100 apiece, which felt very fortunate, and a friend gave me V. 3. I'm about halfway through Volume 2... it takes awhile to listen thoroughly to those collections!
