  1. Watched some of the Yankees-Jays game yesterday, with fans in attendance—good to see and hear even a very small crowd again. The players sounded pretty jazzed about it as well in post-game interviews.
  2. New music from the Tiptons, aka the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet:
  3. Happiness is a box full of Steeplechase CDs... who knew?
  4. Reading Sittin’ In: Jazz Clubs Of The 1940s And 1950s put me in the mood to pull this set out for the first time in several years:
  5. One of the last OOP sets that was on my to-get list:
  6. Really lovely version of “I Can’t Get Started” to be heard here.
  7. Starting in on the Steeplechase order from Tommy’s Jazz that just arrived:
  8. Good to see you again, garthsj--don't be such a stranger!
  9. Really glad you liked it, DM. Hoping to do a couple more in a similar vein in the next year or two.
  10. Oh man, so glad you liked it, Brad! I’ve actually been contemplating a prequel of sorts, focusing on the 1944-1950 years that would draw on the Deccas, the 1944 Commodore sides, and some live recordings as well.
  11. I’m in for the “reasonably priced CD set”—is there a release date for it yet?
  12. Had a very brief conversation with Scott today--he said the Henderson set is indeed on tap for a March release and that it will be 5 CDs.
  13. Thanks for the tip--I have the Fresh Sounds collection and just about all of the individual CD reissues, but I went ahead and sprang for a near-mint copy of the vinyl box at $75, including shipping. Look for a Night Lights show later this year, as I've long considered devoting a program to the label (served as a great rationalization for purchasing the LP set!).
  14. Always happy to have a new release from Jeremy Pelt land in the station’s mailbox:
  15. We re-aired Nat King Cole: Jazz Pianist this past week, and it remains archived for online listening.
  16. I love those Zoot Pablo albums in general!
  17. The single disc of that group live at the Blue Note is quite enjoyable. I picked up the box set a few years ago for a ridiculous price ($10 new, I think?!) and while it’s not perhaps Miles-at-the-Plugged-Nickel worthy, still a somewhat underrated point in the Corea discography. (There’s no overlap between the single disc and the box set, btw.) Right now:
