I flew from Atlanta to Minneapolis to see Ornette Coleman and when the shuttle bus entered the city, one of the first things I saw was a billboard advertising Kenny-geez upcoming concert at a local casino. I threw up in my mouth a little. Kenny G played in Atlanta during this year's pseudo-jazz festival. Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune and David "Fathead" Newman got rained out but G got sunny weather and played as scheduled. God is cruel.

Old news: Saxophonist Remains Dateless, Sues Instrument Manufacturer Saxophonist Remains Dateless, Sues Instrument Manufacturer Ames, Iowa - Mulford A. Barlow, an accountant for the Schneidemann Meat Packing Company and an amateur saxophonist, is suing the Selmer Musical Instrument Corporation for an undisclosed sum of money for what he is terming “gross violations of an implied contract.” Mr. Barlow’s attorney, noted civil rights lawyer Ron Kuby, alleges in papers filed today with the 2nd Circuit Court of Central Iowa that “in their glamorous print advertisements that feature beautiful women gazing longingly at men playing the saxophone, the Selmer Corporation creates the expectation that all one has to do to gain favor with said beautiful women is to purchase and learn how to play one of their extremely expensive saxophones. After spending more than $6000 on a Selmer Mark VII Eb Alto Saxophone and assorted accessories, as well as two years’ worth of private lessons, my client, Mr. Barlow, is no closer to going on his first date than the day he passed his CPA exam.” Saxophonists around the world have rallied to Mr. Barlow’s cause. David Sanborn and Branford Marsalis have organized “Sax Appeal,” a 12-hour live telethon that will raise money to help defray Mr. Barlow’s legal costs and will air on the Fox and ABC networks next Saturday starting at 8pm/7pm Central. Especially noteworthy is former President Bill Clinton’s offer to testify on Barlow’s behalf as an expert witness on the unrealistic sexual expectations placed upon saxophonists. “We’re all victims of a sax-drenched society,” said the former President during a meeting of the Renaissance Society at Hedonism II in Kingston, Jamaica. “TV, radio, movies, video games. It’s nothing but sax, sax, sax.” For his part, Mr. Barlow is said to have become disillusioned with the saxophone and is giving it up in order to concentrate on the accordion. “There are some hot babes who go every week to Polka Night at the local Moose Lodge,” said Mr. Barlow from his bachelor pad in his mother’s house. “Who knows, I just might get lucky.”

No - it's fine the way it is. Some people might have a moment of joy thinking that Philip Glass is gone. Not me though - I've got more Glass than a window pane factory. My favorite work of his is that one that sounds like all of the others. Major arpeggio, minor arpeggio, repeat for two hours - record of the year!* *1994, in France.

For a moment there, I thought there was a misspelling in the topic title.

I got the Osby in the same box as Song XX but haven't cracked the plastic on it yet. Mob Job is one of my favorite Ornettunes so I'm looking forward to hearing Osby's take on it.

I got my copy about 5 minutes ago Listening to it now. Vocabulary insufficient to describe Ornettely-goodness radiating from stereo speakers. The new material is on a par with the previously-released material, maybe even a little better. Nice to hear new versions of previously and/or subsequently-recorded Ornette songs. Need someone with more gooder words to write better review than I are.

It's called Love's Dream and it's great. When I heard it on the radio, I thought it was a lost Ornette session.

Actually it's Stan Getz, not Zoot. And I believe they swap horns on two songs, and they sound pretty good! ←

I got my copy yesterday and I'm loving everything about this recording. The compositions are good, the performances solid, and the artwork is clever. I see this one spending a lot of time in my CD changer (went from the mailbox to the CD player in one swift motion yesterday, bumping Gary Numan in the process). Looking forward to many more listenings. Great work, guys!

This is one of a series of recordings that paired Mulligan up with another saxophonist such as Ben Webster or Zoot Sims. All of them are pretty good. And on the Zoot Sims match-up, Sims and Mulligan swap horns for one song ("Lady in Red" I think).

Did they keep the flag? Maybe this should be in the political forum? BTW: I lived in a backwoods hillbilly town during the Dukes run on network television - from 8 to 9PM on Friday nights the streets were deserted because everyone was home watching them Duke boys.

One night in Japan - after too much work, too little sleep, and a month without a guitar - I had a really vivid dream that I was onstage with a guitar, waiting for my turn to solo (I've never played out before, so this was new to me). I look over to see whose solo I'm going to be following - and it's Herb Ellis. All I can think of is how can I get out of this before I embarass myself in front of everyone. I think this was my subconscious dealing with my lack of confidence in my abilities to finish the project I was currently working on. Or maybe I really missed playing the guitar. Right after I finished the project and came home I bought a Herb Ellis CD. Seemed like the right thing to do.
