Steinbrenner's death is already
papsrus replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I haven't paid much attention to the coverage of his death, but Steinbrenner will be remembered as one of the great characters, not just of baseball, but of the late 20th century. -
Great, great photos. :tup

Tiger's $750M divorce settlement?
papsrus replied to Aggie87's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
A copy editor I used to work with was absolutely evangelical about the difference between "crucial" and "critical." He would get furious if a passage referred to a "critical mistake," or "critical turning point in the game," or something along those lines. Curiously, the first entry for 'disinterested' in the online Webster's gives the meaning JSngry intended. But the description below that entry outlines Larry Kart's concerns, and in fact says that the second definition (outlined by Larry) is the one most frequently used today. None of this is going to help Tiger much though. -
Montreal jazz fest and Suoni 2010
papsrus replied to Van Basten II's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
The caption on the photo at top of first linked article refers to Zorn as Michael Zorn, which kind hints that he might not be that well-known in Montreal? I find that hard to imagine, but maybe so, given the audience reaction. I would have expected exactly the sort of performance that was described -- and probably avoided it in the first place. -
Corridos, conjunto, mariachi and all things Tex-Mex
papsrus replied to kenny weir's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Not sure I can get on board with the whole Tex-Mex thing other than maybe nibbling around the edges here and there, but that Arhoolie site is a nice resource. -
The game was today?

And the Rays got Rodriguez in return. Looks like a good deal for the Rays at this point. Kaz was a frustrating guy to watch, forever nibbling around the plate and running his pitch count up to where you'd be lucky to get 5 innings out of the guy. Seems to me like he always had good stuff, but over the last few years didn't quite know what to do with it.

A full life, as well as a full voice. RIP ------------- Texas and the Angels are both 3-7 over their last 10 games. What was going on with Kazmir last night? Why on earth did Scioscia leave him in the game?

I think Miami offered him $4 mill. So, it's OK. He'd be doing it out of greed. -
Belated birthday wishes.

No doubt. Question is, what is the basis for this sense of betrayal? Putting aside the spectacle of the way he did it, is James' decision itself really this deep betrayal Cleveland fans see? I don't think so. Lots of people leave their roots to seek success elsewhere -- including NBA free agents of all stripes every off-season. It's as American as Apple Pie. Why does Cleveland hate America? -

Excuse me while I puke. Apparently the Mariners are shopping whatever the Yankees are offering (package including prized catching prospect Jesus Montero) in an effort to set up some kind of three-team deal.
-
If you believe Buster, Seattle wants to move Cliff Lee today. And Yankees are apparently in the mix.
-
If he had gone to the Bulls, would you have a different take on the whole thing? No clue how it might turn out, but I'm not sure how Boozer and Rose are a better option than Bosh and Wade. Chicago's got better depth right now, but that's because Miami has virtually no one under contract (that's how they were able to get these three to begin with). But Miami's going to be able to sign some veterans for the league minimum (Shaq?), I'd imagine. All of a sudden, Chicago's "depth" won't seem that overwhelming, I'm guessing.
-
Not 100% sure about this, but I think teams can sign as many veteran players as they need for the league minimum and none of it counts against the cap.

I agree with you there. But he did raise a bunch of cash for the Boys & Girls Club as well with a chunk of the advertising proceeds from his show. -

I see you're in Fairfax, Va. ... But a Cleveland native? ... WTF!!! I love all these talking heads on TV yammering on about how James owed it to Cleveland to stay out of a sense of loyalty, his roots, and on and on. Meanwhile, I don't see any of them doing the local sportscast in their hometowns. So what gives? It's OK for everyone else in the world to split but LeBron James somehow owes Cleveland more than 7 years of his professional career? No sale. -

At the risk of sounding like the pot calling the kettle black, anyone who buys into this hyped-up nonsense either way, including portraying him as a villain, is part of the circus. And Cleveland needs to get over itself. The guy has a right to go wherever he wants. It was mainly Greenberg's transparently self-serving whining about James going to Miami (if that's what he's doing) that struck me as ... well, transparently self-serving whining. If James chooses to go to New York, I can almost guarantee that Greenberg will be singing his praises tomorrow morning, talking about what a brilliant decision it was. Personally, I hope he takes up curling. -

So, anything going on in the off-season? ESPN might as well change its name to LEBRON. Talk about over the top. This morning, Greenberg is pretty much openly and vigorously lobbying against LeBron going to Miami. He was giddy yesterday at the prospect of James going to the Knicks, and perfectly happy with the idea of him going Chicago. Now that it looks like Miami, Greenberg is droning on and on and on about how it will diminish LeBron's future accomplishments, how he's going to betray the people of Cleveland, etc. etc. What a circus. -
The Red Sox are the most banged-up bunch I've seen in a long time. Youklis had trouble trotting tonight; couldn't pivot toward second after the pitcher threw to him on a Zobrist "steal." No throw. Except for a couple of trouble spots, Price was dialed in really good. Now, lets see if the A's can hold on to a 1-0 lead ... () () ... nope

Like this? .... Thanks Shawn. Would have never figured that out myself.

Thanks for embedding the video Shawn. So how do you do it? On my Mac, I control-click (same as right click on a PC) on the video to copy the 'embed code.' Then I hit the little icon here to insert media and paste the code between the tags. But all that happens is the sting of code appears, not the actual video. I must be doing something wrong, but it's not obvious to me what it is. I like rainbow guy, too, on a certain level. One can only imagine what happened when he put the camera down.
