  1. "Wynton Kelly!" Bud Freeman -- "1928 - 1938" (chronological classics)
  2. I like the Jamaican band. Check the guy with the spliff in the background. :eye:
  3. While I enjoy his live Camouflage Trio album "Interface," (2003) with Dresser and Pheeroan Aklaff, there is a certain sameness to his attack, his phrasing, throughout. A little bit of that Braxton influence. I think I enjoy this one as much for Aklaff as anything else, really. Don't really know about anything more recent.
  4. Not sure what you mean by "quaint," 'cause I think the VV list beats the hell out of the ones at Downbeat and the other jazz rags. My only complaint is the lack of recognition of some great sounds that came from Chicago this past year. Sure, Vonski, Baba Fred, and Nicole Mitchell made the top 50, but where are Josh Berman (Old Idea), Jason Adasiewicz (Varmint), or James Falzone (Tea Music)? I'll tell you where - they're on Larry's list! And where might one find Larry's list? Nevermind.
  5. Belated birthday wishes young fella ...
  6. By additional tracks do you mean the trio tracks? Other than on the box, I think those have only been issued under Bud Powell's name seperately? (here) Yes, thanks.
  7. That makes sense. The ojc I have is a 1989 release (OJCCD-044-2), and I had always thought it was a mess. The Mingus overdubs stuck out like a sore thumb. Aggie, I do see a K2 version, but without the additional tracks.
  8. Sonny Rollins, Don Cherry -- "Complete 1963 Copenhagen Concert" Sonny Rollins, Don Cherry -- "Complete 1963 Stuttgart Concert" Sonny Rollins, Don Cherry -- "Complete 1963 Paris Concert" Sonny Rollins -- "Our Man In Jazz" Sonny Rollins, Don Cherry -- "New York 1962, Stockholm 1963"
  9. I just received the Jazz Factory Massey Hall concert and there's no question for me that it's a noticeable improvement over the Debut / ojc. In addition to being more complete, it's far more clean sounding, to my ear. They must have scrubbed it up somehow. I'll revisit the ojc later, but my memory tells me this is a big improvement. Plus, no Mingus overdubs, which just became annoying.
  10. Thanks John. It was eventually going to come to this anyways, so I went ahead and ordered the Copenhagen and Stuttgart as well. To be honest, this was (yet another) complete blind spot for me. Had no idea until recently that these recordings existed. Eager to listen to them now.
  11. Got married (No. 2) in 2000; rediscovered music after ignoring it for far too long; got on an airplane for the first time in about 25 years in November of 2001 and flew to New York City just to show that if fear was their goal, the bastards would not prevail; made gobs of money in the stock market; lost gobs of money in the stock market; got divorced (No. 2); came clean after almost 20 years with my true solemate, who is with me now; began rescuing, fostering and adopting dogs (and a cat -- Peanut); managed to hold on to my phony-baloney job while everyone around me seemed to be losing theirs; began volunteering for the first time in my life; discovered organissimo; quit smoking; started playing (loosely speaking) the alto; became pals with my dad again (why do we sometimes waste the prime years of our lives ignoring the important things?); and am looking forward to surviving, thriving and growing as much in the coming decade as I hope have in the past one. Best wishes to all of you for a happy and prosperous next decade!
  12. Ordered "Our Man In Jazz," "Complete Paris 1963" and "New York 1962, Stockholm 1963" Thanks.
  13. I was afraid of that. ... I guess I'll start in Paris and work my way north. (I think Napoleon may have uttered these very same words!)
  14. There are several -- Copenhagen, Paris, Stuttgart, Stockholm. Do any stand out above the others?
  15. Made for an interesting night in my neck of the woods. Was home on break from work feeding the animals when the boss called. "We're tearing up the front." Nice lazy Saturday turned into a nice newsy one. It's certainly a health issue. Florida is pretty much a dream job, one of the top 4 or 5 coaching jobs in America, along with USC, Notre Dame, Texas, so there's no other reason for him to step down. He's apparently going to remain in Gainesville and possibly have some sort of advisory role in the program. It'll be interesting to see who they can get to replace him at this late date, and how his resignation affects this year's recruiting class, which is right now ranked as the top recruiting class in the country, I believe. When they were looking for a replacement for Zook, Mike Shanahan was someone they pursued. Gruden? It'll be a little strange with no Bowden or Meyer in the state next year.
  16. I heard two separate but pretty much identical accounts today of what happened, basically third- and fourth-hand, but the original sources were independent of one another, both were fairly high up in the food chain, and both accounts were exactly the same in the essential details. So I think it rises above the level of mere "rumor," but not really to the level of "take it to the bank." So I'm not going to repeat the particulars here, but suffice it to say the gag Christmas card photos of el Tigre and his wife are apparently not far off the mark, and he hasn't been anywhere near Florida since shortly after the "incident," which is why he couldn't talk to the FHP. She, frankly, may not do so well at all in a divorce settlement if what I was told turns out to be true. So ... anyone who cares enough about this can PM me for the sordid details, but I don't think they should be repeated publicly.
  17. Received the book for Christmas. I had no reason to think that I might, but low and behold, like a Christmas miracle, there it was! (along with Coltrane's "Side Steps" box )
  18. I'm no drinker, but that definitely doesn't sound like a real drink. Good move leaving it alone. Hope you had a happy birthday.
  19. Ah, very good!
  20. I'm afraid I don't recall your posts, but welcome back, and I'll pay more attention in the future. Scary stuff, these sorts of health issues. I can't even imagine what you've had to go through, but it's wonderful that you're feeling better (if that's the right way to characterize it). Continued strength in your recovery.
  21. I have a foggy memory of the band from when I first started listening to music as a young teenager -- 13-14 maybe. Forget the album -- I think it was a live album, pretty sure. Big Brother, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Dead. ... Have no recollection of how I got turned on to these bands at the time, because certainly none of my friends were listening to them then. I'd also be quite interested in your book, Allen. Please keep us posted on the blog. (Perhaps a way to get some excerpts out?) RIP Mr. Gurley.
  22. Yes, Merry Christmas everyone. ... turducken for me tomorrow at my sister's place!!!
  23. Holy Ghost is a mutha of a track! It suddenly made perfect sense. I'm listening to all this early jazz, New Orleans jazz, and also a pretty healthy dose of free-leaning music.
  24. Albert Ayler -- "Live in Greenwich Village: The Complete Impulse Recordings" Had this on iTunes a while ago. Now gone. Right at the moment, I can't imagine a more perfect set of recordings I should listen to.
