  1. Now I know why hockey struggles to get viewers.
  2. As long as we're at it, not speed but I've been on a steady diet of oxycodone for the past few weeks. Doctor's orders. Takes away physical pain, puts your head in a happy place and kind of makes you mellow and chatty at the same time. Lord only knows what I've been saying.
  3. Happy birthday!
  4. I guess it is rare. Damn. There's a leak somewhere.
  5. Sorry to hear that. It's tough losing an old friend. It sounds like she had a wonderful life.
  6. That was my bro Shawn's advice. Thank you. I remember now. Great advice.
  7. I had one disc that continued to skip no matter how much I cleaned / polished it. In fact, a replacement skipped in the exact same way. (Turrentine and the 3 Sounds - Complete Blue Hour). On the advice of someone here -- sorry, I forget who -- I copied the disc to my hard drive (lossless) and burned a duplicate CD. It worked like a charm! Failing that, I would probably try the grind-it-under-your-heel technique.
  8. ... and develop yet more nasty habits ...
  9. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this. It seems whenever I get a prescription from the pharmacy, almost immediately I start to receive emails from black market prescription drug pushers offering me "deals" on similar medications. I don't think I'm imagining it. There's definitely a pattern, and it makes me think that these outfits must have access to records of what I'm purchasing, either through credit card info or through pharmacy receipts ... or something. Does this happen to anyone else, and is there any explanation for it? It's a little unnerving to think that internet drug sellers have access to my prescription drug purchases at Walgreens. Any ideas?
  10. The general tone of commentary from the sports talking heads on this today seemed to be along the lines of, "What purpose does it serve for him to admit this now?" As if they were offended to have to learn about it, which seems a selfish perspective. Because he is involved in education initiatives for children, the subtext of this line of thinking seems to be, "Why do the children have to know this?" (Too many conversations in this country seem to revolve around, or are tailored to protect, the fragile sensibilities of children. Bah!) Without knowing the details (was it a few times or habitual?) Agassi obviously feels it is part of his larger story. An obstacle he overcame. Owning up to the difficult truths about oneself shows a certain maturity, I think. Maybe the children will be inspired.
  11. Happy birthday!
  12. I'm generally not into this sort of stuff at all, but knowing the history of your project, I might just give it a try. Thanks for laying this all out. Will look forward to the samples.
  13. I was convinced about a third the way into this thread that I had no real grasp of criticism; I was convinced about halfway through that I needed to read this bio; I was convinced about three quarters the way into it that I did not need to read this book at all; I am convinced now that I must. Excellent discussion, all. A little bit blown away right now. Will sleep on it. Listening to Monk's Music, starting with tracks 4 & 5.
  14. Saw that. Sounds like it could be an interesting read. The tennis academy that he attended in his younger years is a fairly well-regarded outfit located here in town. A fair share of tennis names maintain residences here -- Navratilova, Haas, Sharapova among them -- so I'm sure the book will be of some interest locally. He seems like a straight shooter now. I think it's a mistake to judge people by their excesses alone.
  15. Nice recollection. Thanks.
  16. If it is fiction - yes. Otherwise - no (virtually every time anyway). Editing fiction would be a challenge, I would think. But given that I'm certain I don't know all things, I stand by my assertion. In any case, if there's any doubt, discussing a questionable passage with the writer is always safest, in my view. It is the writer's name, not mine, on the article, after all. Now, there are writers who overwrite terribly, basically dressing up flimsy reporting. I make no apologies for slashing and burning at will in these cases. But the red flags are usually so well-worn and obvious, you could do it in your sleep.
  17. I like to ban the internet group before they ban me, which is kinda what it sounds like Allen did.
  18. My rule of thumb is to go over changes with the writer. Simple. They appreciate it and everyone gets the desired result. There may be a very good reason for a writer to have written something that seems to me to be incorrect.
  19. The covers aren't that bad. A certain Audubon Society quality to 'em ... maybe.
  20. Watched the Bama-Vols game. Nice to see Kiffin snatch defeat from the jaws of potential victory at the end. Couldn't happen to a nicer asshole. Bama has a tough defense, but there's no way that's the offense of a No.1 team. Very limited. Average QB at best. Shaky in the red zone. I don't see it. If things play out, they are going to need one hell of a game plan to beat Florida, which has a defense on par with Alabama's and an offense that, while not as prolific as last year's, at least has the potential to score touchdowns. (or give up 100-yard interception returns for TDs, as I just witnessed this second vs. Miss. State)
  21. wow. what a bargain. ... on order.
  22. I wrote caiman off years ago simply because they seemed to take much longer to fill orders, and I'm impatient, I guess. Always had quick service, best prices with MovieMars, Newbury and ImportCDs.
  23. Different things work in different contexts.
