Not too shabby at all. And if they keep winning ...
-
So Meyer says today that he kind of scaled things back in the fourth quarter because, paraphrasing, he was surprised that Tennessee had basically given up at that point. They were down, whatever it was -- 23 - 6? -- halfway through the fourth quarter and just handing the ball off for short gains. That's a pretty clear shot at Kiffin, who had said after the game that he felt like Tennessee could have won it. Kind of like: Could have won the game? Really? Why did you give up then? Or was that you actually "trying."

The "round-midnight" thread

Awww-righty. It's 12:40-ish. I'm really into the Miles Davis 65-68 box. Disc 3, which kicks off with Nefertiti. Brilliant. This band is outrageous. I might be up late tonight listening to this. -
Was listening to "One Down, One Up, Live at the Half Note" earlier today. I love the music, and the quirky way it's presented. Disc 2 isn't as strong as disc 1 though, particularly "My Favorite Things," where Coltrane seems less than inspired -- almost disinterested. He kind of wanders then abandons things altogether. Comes back strong near the end of the taping just before the radio announcer winds things up. There are much better versions. But overall, it's an important set of music for me. Not everyone agrees that it's all that great/cohesive/listenable, however. As I said, I like the quirky presentation, once aptly described as akin to walking into the club midway through their set, then leaving before it's over to head off to another club, perhaps. Thoughts on this one?

The "round-midnight" thread
papsrus replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've been staying up later and later lately. Often get off work after midnight to begin with. I've seen 4 a.m. come and go a couple of times this past week. And then it's not unusual for me to be up by about 9 a.m., sometimes earlier. Sometimes 7! If I get 6 hours a night, I'm OK. If not, there's going to be a massive 9 - 10 hour coma spliced into the week somewhere to deal with what amounts to accumulated exhaustion. :eye: -
LF Herb Ellis - Nothing But the Blues
papsrus replied to Tom 1960's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I have this one on order. It's on the way, so I obviously haven't listened yet. But from all accounts here and elsewhere, it's worth the premium price. -
Watch it. Sorry. Cheap shot. I'm actually rooting for Ohio State these days. Wonder if Urban Meyer has ever had to cheer a team up after a win? Lane Kiffin really comes across as a dick. Showed no signs of manning-up after the game, instead he insisted that his much-publicized comments directed at UF and Meyer were all part of a grand plan to take pressure off his players. ... Uh huh. What was that, six months ago he made those comments? If that was the grand plan, you might be over-thinking things, Lanie. Weasel. The guy makes Spurrier look like a kindly old gentleman. I guess that great FSU-Miami game wasn't simply a case of two bad teams playing one another. Then again, BYU was ranked way too high. Still hard to get a handle on who's going to rise to the top. Florida offense looked bland. USC has QB problems. Big Ten has Big Ten problems. Maybe it's Texas' year? Haven't really seen them, except on highlights. This all points to why early season losses shouldn't count for much. It takes some of these really good college teams 4 - 5 weeks to get cranked up sometimes.

A corner/safety from The LBC made a few good plays for the Canes... FL talent is down...So Cal may be the answer, especially if they can land a QB from the Beach. That "down" FL talent seems to be doing OK so far. So Cal just got beat by Washington. (EDIT: misread that. I guess you mean Cal may be the answer. I can go with that). But it's college, so ... just about anything can happen (except Ohio State winning a big game outside their conference.)

That's a great one, paps! I'm mad about Roy Eldridge's playing in the 50s. He's also fantastic on Mingus and Roach's Newport Rebels. I've coveted that one for a while. Spurred to act by King Ubu, if I recall correctly, in another thread. Looking forward to it.

Herb Ellis -- "Nothing But the Blues"

When I was in college, I changed a blown head gasket once on a late 70s Chevy Malibu. Took me about a week pulling that thing apart and putting it back together again. Problem was, I didn't realize I needed a specific kind of torque wrench to refasten the manifold. As soon as I started that sucker up again, the gasket blew. ... had it towed to a garage and haven't worked on a car since.

Disturbing Story, Spit-Take Headline
papsrus replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Taking an insane killer with a history of escaping to a fair and letting him walk around with $50 in his pocket is about the dumbest idea I've heard. Can you imagine the guards? "Sorry boss. Don't know how it happened, but the insane killer got away ... again." -
They did. Hard to tell this early, but that QB looks great. Young team. With the early sked they play, if they keep winning they'll be top ten in short order.

If you are able to go, would love to get your impressions. If I had a couple of days off, I'd be tempted to venture down there myself.
-
Fortunately, tremendous advances have been made in lip-syncing over the years.
-
I will be grinding away at work, unfortunately. Is this a club worth keeping an eye on otherwise? Do you know it Dan?
-
I've had my eye on that one for a while. Time to pull the trigger, I guess.
-
I really enjoy that one. Was listening to it the other day. If you dig it, also check out "Year of the Elephant" with the same band, if you don't have it already. Very good.

I haven't reached this point yet. Could only narrow it down to about 15,000 artists or so. Don't want to clog things up with all THAT. I will say that I can put just about anything on involving Drake and Parker and be happy as a clam. So I guess that's kind of the same thing, although I don't feel the need to gobble up every new release that comes down the pike. (Is it pike, or pipe? I can never get that one straight) (It's pike)

I guess it's OK to admit I got the Brookmeyer used a while ago then? It feels almost like bragging.

Ordered "Monk in Italy" the other day. And board member Alexander Hawkins' "No Now Is So"
-
It looked like he completely bailed on that ball. It dropped right in front of him. Pretty close to the stands though. But still. It seemed like the Angels defense made more than a couple of costly flubs in the late innings. That seems like a bigger factor in the outcome of that game than the no-call on the strike, which tied the game -- didn't lose it.
