  1. I apologize for grabbing the music and not participating in the listeners' comments. I'm just not that good at keeping up with these things. I can assure you though that your choices will spur me on to more explorations. Thanks for putting it together, and again, apologies for bailing on the follow-up comments.
  2. Happy birthday Bud! Can't tell you how glad I am to finally have come to get to know you.
  3. Bucs are woeful. Blech.
  4. Amazon has a list. I assume it's complete Blue Note. The entire series is available there, by the way, for a cool $1,650.
  5. It does appeal to me as well. There's a review here, with some owner comments that echo Phillyq's concerns. The Mazda3 is appealing also, but I'm thinking it may be a bit tight. That Edmunds.com mentioned above, which I'd not heard of, seems like a great place to search for vehicles.
  6. This is going to be more complicated than I thought. Anyone heard anything good, bad or otherwise about the Hyundai Elantra Touring? Gets 23/30 mpg. Not great, but not bad. Seems to have about the right kind of room I'm looking for. Fairly reasonably priced -- around $17,000 new. And in this economic environment, I bet I could whittle that down. If I could find a used one, so much the better.
  7. I listen while I sleep. I can run through a lot of stuff that way.
  8. A hair-raising experience, no doubt
  9. After reading the suggestions so far, I've decided to just retire from driving and stay home with Bright Moments' signature girl. The Prius looks good. I've heard that the mileage gains on these hybrids come mainly with city driving and not so much with highway miles. I guess that makes sense.
  10. The old Miata is breaking down. Last month the clutch. Now the radiator. Time for a new vehicle. I'm thinking pre-owned, something like a Rav -- smaller SUV type thing, or station wagon/hatch-back deal with room for five. The Rav isn't really quite the answer for 5 passengers. But something along those lines. Has to have good gas mileage. As I know next to nothing about vehicles, I thought some of you might have some ideas. Will check consumer reports also. thanks
  11. My cd compulsion forced me to give up eating some years ago. Sounds nice though.
  12. Got some old wax cylinder thing kicking around here somewhere that I swiped from the Edison museum last month by this Buddy Bolden fella. Where did I put that thing? I actually did pick up a CD of early Edison recordings -- "The Brown Wax Sampler, 1891 - 1903" -- which includes tracks such as "The Virginia Skeedaddle," "The Laughing Song," "Uncle Josh in a Museum" and "Our Whistling Slave Girl."
  13. I'm interested in the Smith. I've noticed your excitement about the Freeman lately. Both look intriguing.
  14. Sporadic torrential downpours.
  15. Welcome back MG. You were indeed missed.
  16. Thanks Bruce. The avatar's great, as are the good vibes. Glad you're doing so well. As for my own situation, they're still working the schedule out but it looks like surgery on Oct. 15. I hope the message here is simply get yourself checked out regularly. The earlier you catch this stuff, the better.
  17. Nope, just putting that out there. Well, it's a minor quibble, but unless I'm missing the whole point of these numbers, I would expect 5,000 pressings available for sale to mean just that. I'm all for Mosaic issuing as many sets as they can sell while they have access to the material, but the fact that they themselves use these numbers somewhat prominently in their promotional material indicates that Mosaic thinks the numbers are of some importance.
  18. Congrats! Don't sell that Atlanta scene short. Sure wish they still had the jazz fest though.
  19. Dark, with the forecast calling for conditions to remain dark overnight before slowly getting lighter again at dawn, followed by increasing lightness throughout the early morning hours tomorrow. Skies will be light through the day tomorrow, but look for increasing darkness again as evening approaches. We're likely to have another dark one tomorrow night. September's been pretty much like August here -- although wetter and a bit more humid. But still dang warm. The water, too.
  20. Exhilarating! I received my copy yesterday (thank you!) and have just finished a second spin. This is a real gem. So many melodic and rhythmic things happening here, and it all unfolds so organically, quite beautifully. The instrumentation is brilliant; the music expansive and rich, mysterious and seductive. I am not -- for better or worse -- familiar with the Sun Ra piece, but the performance here is really quite something. I must get round to the man from Saturn someday. Well done indeed, Alexander.
  21. I don't think he's actually playing at Disney World, but rather has hired some musicians who work there to play in his band at Orlando clubs -- The Plaza Theater is mentioned in the article. I knew he'd been over in Orlando for some years. He should have picked one of the coasts, but he seems to like it. I really need to get over there to listen to him.
  22. Went back and looked over a couple of threads related to this release, as well as the earlier released music you reference. Thanks for pointing those out. I agree this is incredible music, particularly disc one, as I mentioned -- which I'm listening to now. Coltrane and Jones are unbelievable on the title track. And when the quartet is pushing full throttle on Afro Blue, it's pretty amazing. Tyner is a force. I also love the shots of the bandstand on the inside cover, with the time-card slot box off to one side and the liquor bottles sitting on a shelf right below Coltrane. What a place! I guess Tyner's jammed in the back somewhere. The tiny stage offers a sharp visual contrast to the immense music. It's almost comical to imagine this music came from that stage, really. It must have been truly overwhelming to be there at the time. Thanks Guy, and everyone, for the comments on this.
  23. I'm eagerly awaiting my copy, and enjoyed reading your impressions. And welcome, mjazzg!
  24. Typical of Lonehill, isn't it? They're so free with the word "complete" in their titles, too! Just want to point out that as far as I can tell, the lonehill referenced above seems to include the original 8 tracks, but does not have the four live bonus tracks included on the Verve reissue that I received today -- which btw has a very nice, crisp sound. The live JATP bonus tracks add Hawkins, Peterson and Gillespie to the original lineup of Ellis, Eldridge, Getz and Ray Brown. Gus Johnson replaces Stan Levey on drums for these last four tracks. Very pleased. Unless you want the Giuffre as part of a lonehill two-fer, I'd go for this verve reissue.
