Thanks for the reminder Bertrand, I've not played these for a while, all I can recall is the piano sound. I'll add them to my to play pile.

AOTW 12/22-12/28 BLACKSTONE LEGACY Woody Shaw
JohnS replied to sidewinder's topic in Album Of The Week
I wasn't attracted to this when the double album first came out and I'd more or less overlooked it until I got the cd a a year or so ago. I'm sorry to say that it doesn't do very much for me. The tracks are overlong and not too much happens in places. Listening to this I'm reminded of Herbie Hancock's sextet in spots and I was surprised to see that this album predates Herbie's sextet recordings. I think I'll stick to the Mosaic set. -
Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for making this such a friendly and interesting board.

Is this the one that came out on Konnex. It's two different quartets. I had it briefly and didn't care for it but then it's so unlike the Silkhearts, which I love, that maybe it's not surprising. Must be those guitars. -
I too was disappointed by "Counter Clockwise". It all seemed rather too studied to me. But I've seen a video of them on tour, almost like a different group with room to stretch put. Strange about Holland. The band are great live but their records don't do much for me. Another disappointing release is Pat Martino's Think Tank. A great line up which doesn't quite deliver.

From a small sample of friends and board members around 75% of have unplayable copies of the copy protected Passing Ships. As I returned mine to the dealer presumably it will end up at back at EMI eventually. Maybe someone there will pick it up. Writing to EMI, from past experience, is a waste of time.

Not only did mine skip, the player took ages to recognise the disc. The replacement cd seems fine but in the meantime I have changed my cd player. As skipping errors seem so uncommon these days I'm blaming copy protection, though that said this is the first to show any problems. I shall definitely think twice about buying Euro Blue Notes in future.

Very sad. For the record I've always likes the VGM lps.

I got this when it first came out, I think it was the first Hammond date I'd heard. Loved it ever since.

I've still got my vinyl copy never having felt the need to upgrade. This is one of those albums that I respect rather than like and rarely play. All the components are in place for a great date but it doesn't really work for me. The guys sound as if they are going to be different at all costs and they are finding it difficult. Things have loosened up by the final track but I would have liked another swinger to make it more palatable.

Happy Birthday John, and many more.

Here I am in Utah earlier this year. Not the most flattering but all I could find.

Hey John, Nice to see you here.

With some things I'm definitely a collector. But I really want to be a listener but I find that time is always limited. So things get played, I listen but don't always hear. That why there is always a pile of cds on the floor awaiting "listening" rather than just playing. I guess I have to class myself as a reluctant collector.

Well I've had this in most of its incarnations. The King lp. the Mosaic set and the Conn. I loved it from the off and it's still my favourite Brooks album. Maybe Tina is the shy one here but his playing sound assured to me. Morgan is a great partner and for me this is his best period. Lots of audacious playing. Clark is his usual elegant self and Blakey, taking a bit of a back seat drives it all along without being overpowering. One thing I particularly like about this date is the inclusion of "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Star Eyes". Both work very well here as they had done in the past for others. Unusual too for a BN album to feature standards so heavily. This is one of those albums which illustrates what's meant by the the Blue Note sound. When I sold the lp to a Boston jazzer years ago it started a fine friendship which continues even now. Quite a bonus.

I've never heard the album but Lord lists the date as "early 60s".

"Four For Trane" is the one to get, but "On This Night" and "The Way Ahead" are pretty good too. If you can find on The Bill Dixon/Archie Shepp Quartet on Savoy is essential listening.

I love the trombone. The thing about it is it's sound, nothing quite has the same crackling brassy projection, especially close up. I got my first taste of the sound sitting about five feet away and directly in front of JJ and Kai. More recently I've been in the line of fire from Robin Eubanks and Jeb Bishop. The energy and overtones always to get lost with distance and amplification.

Just playing "Such Great Friends" by Stanley Cowell, Billy Harper, Reggie Workman and Billy Hart. It's one that I've overlooked and it's been languishing on my shelves for ages without a play. Much better than I remembered form my initial playings.

Chris, I promised to tag Big Al.

Tina Brooks - Minor Move (click here to buy) In the absence of anything else King Ubu's persuaded me to nominate. TINA BROOKS MINOR MOVE This is one of my all time favourite records and features an all star line up that is hard to beat.

I'd like to nominate TINA BROOKS MINOR MOVE If no one has any objections. If I get away with this I'll tag you for next week Big Al. I'll give it a an hour or so and start a new thread.
