  1. The last day or so Vinyl Chet Baker; Once Upon A Summertime Mel Lewis And Friends CD Freddie Hubbard; Blue Spirits Other Dimensions In Music -Silkheart cd, - Can recommend this one. Khan Jamal; Balafon Dance
  2. No summer break planned this year, just a short trip to Bruges (a short trip via the channel tunnel from the UK) in June and later, hopefully, Phoenix in the Autumn. Really looking forward to visiting Arizona again.
  3. Sorry chaps, I can't hear an alto on my first generation cd-phones or speakers.
  4. On tomorrows play list.
  5. Bob, I'm guessing it was Asman's. I found the Sonny Clark Trio there around the same time for £2.00. Now days I don't have the patience to search the bins like I did then.
  6. I voted for JJ. But I love Bennie Green and I can't ignore Curtis Fuller and Frank Rosolino. Playing now Ray Anderson's the man. Jeb Bishop and Robin Eubanks can often do it for me too.
  7. I came across this over twenty years ago in a second hand bin in one of the London shops, I forget which one now. No jacket unfortunately. As well as it being a bit out of the ordinary I was particularly pleased as it was the only issued Andrew Hill album I did not have and it was pretty hard to come by at the time.
  8. The best AOTW so far. As my interest is mainly fifties and later jazz my collection is not overflowing with Coleman Hawkins records but to my unaccustomed ears he sounds on fine form, especially on the standards. Rollins is perhaps more audacious than usual, even by his standards, his more staccato playing contrasting nicely with Hawk's more flowing style. They pick up on each others nuances on a few occasions and you can frequently hear where Sonny is coming from in Hawk's playing. Bley, a favourite of mine, accompanies sensitively and takes some adventourous solos. Both Cranshaw and Grimes give fine swinging support, Grimes coming into his own on the fast McGhee(on my cd, At McKie's on some other issues). McCurdy moves everything along nicely too. This cd warrants repeated listenings-I've played it a lot over the last few days and there's still more to hear. Highly recommended.
  9. Tough choice, but if I could only take one to the desert island it would have to Bill Evans. But if Paul Bley was on the list my vote might have been different.
  10. Thanks to Jim's link Anthony Davis *1951 Bobby Jaspar *1926 Uwe Kropinski *1952 Lew Soloff *1944 Nancy Wilson *1937 Jimmy Yancey *1898
  11. Can't really commit to one of these. Farlow, Hall, Wes, Green, Sco - I just can't choose. Sorry!
  12. I like 'em all, but Big John wins by a length. Loads of soul and plenty of creativity.
  13. Thanks ghost for reminding us of Gregory Herbert-one of the nice things about this board. I don't suppose I've played Baker's "..... Summertime" or Mel Lewis And Friends" (Horizon) for years. I've just finished playing the Baker disc and Herbert is quite impressive and I think Jim has described his playing accurately. I have the Lewis to look forward to this afternoon where he also plays alto. Forgotten too what nice productions Artist House were, the Baker has a typically lavish jacket plus a booklet/discography. I knew his life was cut short by drugs but I didn't know he was that nasty.
  14. Don't miss this set. The music's fine, and the set has an exceptional booklet.
  15. I'm sorry to say this is pretty much my view of recent Lloyd.
  16. Two taped from tv in the last week; Blue Velvet; always worth watching Existenz; First time for this, polished but amazingly weird, another Cronenberg classic
  17. I went for "Night Dreamer", but it could just as easily have been "JuJu" or "Speak No Evil". Asked this before my answer was the one I played last.
  18. Last few Gerry Mulligan; Midas Touch Organissimo; Waiting For The Boogaloo Sisters Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery; Further Adventures.. Bobby Previte; Counterclockwise Keith Jarrett; Up For It
  19. Billy Bang; The Fire Within Sonny Rollins meets Coleman Hawkins Jimmy Smith Wes Montgomery; Further Adaventures.. Bobby Previte; Counterclockwise Keith Jarrett; Up For It
  20. I fought shy of this, I don't particularly enjoy Miles at this time, it's a lot of money and it's hard to find the time to play a big set like this and do it justice in any case. But I know one person who has the box. I'm not too sure what he thinks of it but I've heard the eight discs with John Scofield and I these are very listenable. Still not sure I'd want to spend the money.
  21. I love it here too. I used to visit the BNBB board no more than once a day. Here I'm a real addict. There's always something interesting going on. And you guys are great.
  22. Spot on!
  23. RT, that's exactly why Patton is so good.

I didn't make the connection earlier but these are mid price-Crazy Jazz has them listed at £8.95.

I was sent a copy of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago's The Spiritual in a trade from the Slovak Republic. It sounds okay but I don't know the original to compare. Has a slipcase though as well as slightly more appealing presentation. Can't really believe that these are meant to sell at full price.
