The ZYX issue hasn't made the UK yet. It was listed to appear at £7.99 back in May, I even sold my Boplicity lp, but it's subsequently disappeared from the lists. It seems to be more expensive on Amazon.de. Delays like this are par for the course for the British distributors.

This is a fine album by a great group. It's been in my collection since it came out on Concept in 1985. Most anything by this group can be recommended.

I'd go as far as to say the whole HORO 2lp catalogue. Near the top of my list of reissues I'd like to see are the Mulligan Quartets on Verve get a cd reissue and the Phil Sunkel's Jazz Concerto Grosso on ABC Paramount. The New York Contemporary 5 is out on Storyville minus one track so a complete reissue would be welcome especially if there's extra material.

Just got the Fresh Sounds Hope today, 8.80 Euros from FS. I'd not heard this before, only seeing the Japanese vinyl years ago so I can't say if the cd sound is improved but Elmo's on fine form. It's untidy in spots and a couple of the horn solos could best be termed enthusiastic.

I have Lord and I think it's pretty good. Easy to use, looks okay, the main problem as far as I'm concerned is that you can't copy and paste. From a thread on a now defunct bulletin board I know that Bruyninckx has some fans. No doubt they will psst in due course.

Thanks Jim I may have it tucked away somewhere. Interesting playing Joe Henderson's "Isfahan" and "Bloodcount". The way Joe tackles "Isfahan" makes it much more interesting for me. His version of "Bloodcount" is reverential and he keeps sentimentality at bay. I can imagine this piece could easily veer in that direction.

Sundog, I have the Henderson "Isfahan", I'll check it out but I guess it has a bit of muscle. Jim, I don't believe I have an Ellington version of Strayhorn's "Bloodcount". Can you recommend a version, I'm sure I can borrow a copy.

Just played "A LIttle Juicy". MY vinyl's a bit crunchy but it's a fine album with some very good Thad, but then he always sounds good to me. Enjoyed "This Is.." A fine reissue choice.

Thanks for mentioning Ted Brown. I've not played anything of his for an age. I've added "In Good Company" to my to play pile. On another tack, Danko's Steeplechase recordings have been consistently good.

Thanks for the recommendation Bob, next time in in Dorset I'll give the Smith's Arms a try.

I got the taste for bagels on my last visit to the US. I'm not sure that the local product is quite the same as I soon tired of them. But you can't beat a good bacon sandwich-British bacon that is not the stuff they serve up in the US.

I'm not so sure about fertility symbols, I certainly didn't spot any geniatlia on a recent visit, anyway the stones are probably not in their original positions. This however is more likely to be a fertility symbol

Well okay, I'm not really an Ellington fan or a big band lover for that matter but I like the AOTW thread so I borrowed an early cd copy. When I was discovering jazz I went through a big band phase but in the end I decided on a core collection of modern small groups because of time, money, space etc. That said though one my most magical jazz experiences was hearing the Ellington band live in 1963 for the first time, the sound the band made, and the sax section in particular, was unforgetable. I enjoyed playing this through. more so the second time around. It's a nice set and holds together nicely as a suite. I know it's sacrilege but I've never really taken to Hodges' ballads, I was turned off in the first place when I heard "Warm Valley" and "Isfahan" doesn't do anything to change my mind. Much too sickly sweet for my taste. Ellington's piano is timeless, I could have done with more and his contribution to the final track is the cd's highlight for me. Other good things, Gonsalves usually pleases, Carney's enormous sound, Hamilton's clarinet and the trombones. Duke has always had a way of writing some nifty trombone figures. I'll be playing this again before I return it but at the moment I can't see me adding much Duke to my collection even though I know I probably should.

It's up to Jim. The post was a sort of a joke, not funny imo, but what irritates me is that this is a generally a place for decent discussion, Jim shouldn't have to spend his time messing around dealing with this nonsense.

He made two cds for Antilles. "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart" and "Cooking At The Continental". The former is well worth looking for. Certainly an overlooked figure.

Not among my top pianists. Andrew is for me someone to admire for his abilities as a leader, composer, arranger and, yes a pianist within the group. His solo recordings and concerts have never appealed to me, a lot of it tends to ramble, he sounds far better with a strong rhythm section to focus his playing for the listener. That said he's made some great records. Favourite pianists include Sonny Clark, Horace Silver through to Kenny Werner, Paul Bley, John Hicks and Martial Solal.

When I was collecting vinyl this album was near the top of my most wanted list. When I eventually got a copy I recall being mildly disappointed by it. Playing the cd through now I don't hear very much to make me change my mind. Mobley sounds ill at ease, maybe it's the material but he doesn't generate the momentum or display the rhytmic ease of his best work. There's a hint of what he can do on the last track, though it's nowhere near his best. Lee Morgan comes off best. Love the jacket.

I just might be tempted by the Jazz Crusaders. With an augmented group I suspect it's not among their best, some of these latin efforts end up sounding a bit twee. Anyone care to comment on this one. Otherwise none of these reissues are for me.

I use PayPal for my ebay for international sales. It's always worked for me and I don't mind them taking their pound of flesh for the convenience. When you've had money extracted from a letter as I had recently it's worth it for safety and security.

new CD trays where the center hole grip is solid
JohnS replied to skeith's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Does anyone else have trouble with those slim line double cases, the ones with the hinged trays. I always find that it's a struggle getting the cds off the tray, it's especially bad with the second cd where the tray isn't held by the case. The cds flex alarmingly before I can get them off.
