Yesterday Prompted by the mention of James in the underrated pianists topic. This one predated the ESP by three years. Disc one.

I recall seeing the Messengers twice (possibly a third time that's gone from my memory). The first I remember was the version with Lee Morgan, John Gilmore and John Hicks. This London concert was issued on a bootleg lp/cd. The Jimmy Giuffre Trio was on the same bill. I saw a later version with, I think, Bobby Watson and Bill Pierce, can't remember who else. I remember being pretty disappointed as they just seemed to be going through the motions.

I dont know his recordings. He piqued my interest when he performed at the Mingus Prom so I thought the Southampton gig was worth a punt. I can imagine his live performances don't necessarily represent his studio stuff.

Last night, Christian Scott at Turner Sims. I didn't really know what to expect but his playing was quite astonishing. Terrific technique and sound. Some effective use of electronics. Pretty much a full house with an appreciative audience, good mix of ages too.

I was lucky enough to snap up the cd box in Tower Records in London years ago, presumably around release time. All good stuff.

Japanese issue. Extra tracks from other Blakey sessions. I like this edition of the Messengers and particularly enjoy the Lerner and Loewe recording.

Lord lists three or four sessions by bass player Jackson.. I'm assuming it's the same person.

Don't know too much about Christian Scott. He made a good impression a few weeks ago at the MIngus Prom so I've taken the plunge and have tickets to see him next week.
