    Freddie Gambrell

IIRC a review in Jazz Journal back in the 60s mistakenly referred to Gambrell as a woman!.. Presumably because of the cover art.
  2. One of the problems with the German WEA issue is the sound. The rhythm section is barely audible in spots. But I've not heard any other version to compare. I've not listened to the Contemporaries lately but my recollection is that they are preferable.
  3. Before;Kenny Dorham.. Jazz Contemporary. Bainbridge reissue.
  4. A bit of a stuggle getting all way through this,
  5. I've had them since release. Very nice and have a permanent place in my collection. I'm particularly fond of Gil's contribution.
  6. This morning's listening OJC Wave Jazz Classics

    John Tchicai

I took this at Cadentia Nova Danica's London gig way back. I've posted it before but maybe it's worth posting again.
  9. One of my favourite Murray albums.
  10. Earlier, now Johnny Coles; The Warm Sound. Epic France (no image)

    Archie Shepp

The NYC 5, the Shepp/Dixon Quartet, Four for Trane are among my favourite records. I enjoyed the Moncur/Rudd band, especially live, I was lucky to see them perform several times. I'm sorry to say that anything after didn't grab me to the same extent. I can't say that I've heard to much from the post Impulse period but on the few I have heard he doesn't he didn't sound particularly engaged. I was introduced to Mr Shepp during his spell at Ronnie Scott's, I was overawed, nervous and at my tender age I couldn't think of anything sensible to say. Was that the Queen Elizabeth hall gig? I was there at that one too. Hill's solo set was particularly good that night. 2000/2001? I was there too, I don't recall it being very memorable.

  16. Pathe DMM What a fun date! I play this on CD quite a bit. Well worth the listen. MIne's on Roulette. Did Prestige have to hand it over to them at sometime? The album illustrated is Roulette SR59049. The original issue was Prestige PR7459. Recorded 10 Sep 1965; produced by Richard Carpenter (who I think was Stitt's manager). I've never seen this album on either label. As far as I knew, in this period, Sonny wasn't contracted to any label. Maybe Prestige didn't own the master but Carpenter? And he passed it to whomever he could get bucks from? MG The Back liner is clearly a typically Prestige layout and mentions several PR releases
