  5. I recall reading about the octet 50 or more years ago when I first got into jazz. I was intrigued by the article but I''ve never heard the group. Something to remedy. Recordings of the original Wilder-led group are hard to come by these days, since the CD reissue of Frank Sinatra Conducts Alec Wilder album is now out of print and fetching collectors' prices. There are a couple of CDs containing recent recordings of Wilder's octet music along with other Wilder compositions, such as this one by the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra: I know, last time I looked, admittedly a while ago now, there was nothing.

  7. Sad news. I heard he was very ill. As well as being a big band player he performed at our club three or four times in a quintet setting. Nice player and nice guy. This image shows Watkins(l) with KennyWheeler and Martin Shaw
  8. kuchiki - fine pianist, terrible groaner.
  9. I've had a few thing from Messengers, nothing recently though. One item went astray but it was replaced immediately without question. If in Barcelona the shop is well worth a visit.
  10. There was a massive hike in UK overseas postage rates last year. A thin magazine to Europe now costs £3. To send a reasonably well packed lp to the US costs around £10,even more to Japan, Australia etc.

Bird should be played at least once a week to keep everything else in perspective.

    Donald Byrd

Just sampled the opening track. If it's mostly like that it's a decent addition to the Byrd discography.
  19. Ditto. Lotsa gems in there! No doubt. Question: does anybody else with this box have a problem with the paper cover on the back, or bottom, of the box. Mine wasn't properly glued on and now comes off everytime I pick it up. I have some of these boxes, none of the back covers seem to be properly glued.
  20. Now on disc 7 (First Meditations)
  21. Still on the Complete Impulse Quartet Studio Recordings, Now disc 3, next disc 4.
  22. Have a happy birthday Mike.
