I think you scored with Where Fortune Smiles. Although I don't own it, the samples I've heard are awesome! Just have a cd player and the cd is pretty rare nowadays.

I dig it enough, but I like his other two Impulse's way more.

If we take stock of BN quality control (Booby Hutcherson, Retouched Cover to Come, mistake with Freddie Redd's Shades of Redd BN logo on the RVG booklet, Dialogue remaster error, etc, etc...) Are we really surprised that BN has not addressed or seemingly not even ackowledged a mistake with OSB?

I picked this one years ago at Half Price. Saw Rudd's name on it but was not familiar with Lowe at the time-its a really really good disk.

Along with Joe Henderson's Our Thing! I love Black Fire, and what later came out as a single (Conn) as PAX is one hell of an interesting date too... Date: February 10, 1965 Location: Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ Label: Blue Note Andrew Hill (ldr), Joe Henderson (ts), Freddie Hubbard ©, Andrew Hill (p), Richard Davis (b), Joe Chambers (d) Yeah! Forgot about Pax! Great, great record!

What label is this on? I guess I'm on the fence as to whether these recordings are really essential. I do like the Columbia period and all, which with all do respect was his last major contract, didn't find Monk bringing a whole lot of new material to the table, and I suspect that these tapes, which seem to offer nothing new material-wise, will fall into the same category. Does anyone know if he put an entirely new twist on these concerts, or is it going to be....watered-down....like the Columbia's begun to be? PS: I'm not harping on Monk, who I respect a lot! Its just that later in his career, Monk liked to revisit his older material over and over and over again .

No problem Luckily, we've been afforded many RVG remasters from this series, so its a shame that One Step Beyond has suffered from a "botched" master.

The collector's Choice cd's can be identified, like you said, with 1995 date on the disc and the original cd issue date on the tray card, which don't usually match. They were also issued with white trays (like the 1994 Conn's).

Ed Thigpin's Out of the Storm-VEE. Pretty nice stuff!

Sounds like you have a Collector's Choice reissue, which were never remastered, just reissued.

There are a few Organissimo members here who have an inside scoop on BN. They may weigh in here if any info comes down the pike about a replacement disk.

Thanks for posting that! Again, great news!

Thanks for posting that and clearing up his mysterious disappearance from jazz and earth for that matter! Truly one of the best comeback stories in jazz.

Get a rare look inside a bald eagle nest in the wild
AndrewHill replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was at the Kennedy Space Center last week, which included a bus tour to the launch pad that was 15mins away from the visitor center. NASA owns all the land and turned it into a wildlife preserve, so the drive included a great view of alligators, birds along the way. On the way back, the driver pointed out that there was a bald eagle's nest that must've been the size of a hot tub! It was unreal! I tried to snap a pic of it, but all I got was trees. You have to see it to believe it. -
This is a terrible tragedy. An unfortunate accident with tragic consequences.

I agree, and yet it seems with this series you take the good with the bad: for every vintage (Terry Gibbs) there's another re-issue of another Coltrane album. I'll never understand it either, and since I can't really do anything about it, just keep buying the ones that interest me in hopes that the record company gets the message (put out more stuff that hasn't been issued previously, quit bombarding us with endless Coltrane repackages!) Well, I certainly agree with you, but almost all record companies, even jazz oriented ones, still pitch to the middle. Despite all the many reissues, Coltrane, Monk and Miles Davis must continue to outsell all the obscure artists that are on their first go around. If they really aimed at the Mosaic niche for instance, most would go under. Frustrating I know. I also agree. I think the last major undertaking of getting lesser known items out in the catalogue died with the Verve Elite Editions. Even the LPR series (which also seems dead) yielded quite a few items that hadn't been issued on cd too, but the Originals series clearly seems to be a re-packaging of items that have already been reissued with an unissed item tossed in here and there; a real disappointment

Well at least Getz's 'At the Shrine' is back in circulation; I really like Brookmeyer with Getz and the sound's pretty good too. But why did they change the DSM cover??? I'm glad to have the '92 cd!

How does your spouse react to your hobby/obsession?

Although my wife still thinks that most of my cd's sound like an "orchestra warming up" she encouraged me to buy proper cd shelves to house my collection, which was scattered about my office in heaping piles. I now have two shelves, when pushed together, amount to more than 8 feet in length and they stand over 6 1/2 feet tall and they're black. Even after I was finish shelving, she commented that it was a pretty impressive looking collection. The min-lp's don't all fit though except on the top shelf, but that's not a biggie. -
