  1. To answer your second question, I think things were toned down because Monk was too out there for a general audience, which BN, Prestige, and Riverside could hande, but not a major label like Columbia. I'm sure there are those that were there or those that researched this, would know this better than my account.
  2. Personally, I'd grab the solo Monk 2 cd set on Columbia, but the Vogue material is also very good, especially the date from 1954. Hope that helps, HG
  3. Have a good one!
  4. Strange Strings didn't blow your socks off?
  5. Gerry Mulligan-Age of Steam-A&M Albert Mangelsdorff and the Jazz Sextet-European Tour 1957-Lonehill Jazz
  6. PJ? Pacific Jazz? Yup.
  7. Tenor Madness, if I recall. When I saw him back in 2001, he said this was dedicated to a "great friend" of his, which was the encore, "Tenor Madness".
  8. Smart choice. back then, HI FI was it!
  9. I was just playing Jazz at Cal-Tech yesterday!!! RIP I really dug his alto/flute playing on his PJ sides I own by him, and I especially doug his partnership with Bob Cooper. Thanks for all the great music!
  10. Maybe Bud Shank, but who knows what tomorrow will bring
  11. Would've been watching the Sony Ericsson but my wife switched cable co's and I lost The Tennis Channel; now I only get some weekend coverage
  12. Ok, cool. Thanks guys for the reviews!
  13. I not too familiar with Mulligan's 70's output, but I have this one on hold at Half Price, and I know its OOP. So, how is it? It seems to be largely an accoustic affair, except for the electric guitars, but I'm not too sure about that, and it seems to be progressive along the same lines as Miles and Don Ellis of the same era. So, is it worth picking up? Opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks, HG
  14. Up for air. This is such a great label making so many MODE titles available at reasonable prices, plus even more obscure lables such as Hollywood and Tampa. Hard to believe that Mode got so many great artists and yet they never seem to obtain the same popularity as Blue Note and Prestige. I can't recommend these enough: Pepper Adams Quintet Eddie Costa Quintet Frank Rosolino Quintet Mel Lewis Sextet Warne Marsh-Music for Prancing Vic Feldman on the vibes
  15. That is prime Tapscott! A pretty good deal, if you ask me.

  17. I'll never forget his name now! Wasn't it McLean who thought Connors botched the session anyway? Even though Jackie rejected the session himself, that lineup with Woody and Moncur has got to be salvagaeble somehow...right?
  18. Can we request "Abrasion" as a Conn candidate anyway?
  19. PredatorX on NatGO.
  20. I like the title they chose for the McLean; Abrasion's got a nice ring to it.
  21. True, it is Ozzy afterall. I suppose if you went to see Gallagher you'd expect the same.
  22. OMG!!! It is soooo baaad. If I was in that audience getting sprayed with that crap that Ozzie was shooting out of that hose, I would've been furious!
