Can I ask whether you thought it was an 'off' night for the group or were you just generally unimpressed with them overall? I thought they sounded good on the cd, so that's why I'm curious. HG

Which Coltrane are you enjoying right now?

Latest purchase: Transistion -
I only have one: David Murray-Flowers for Albert:The Complete Concert. Pretty smokin' for early Murray. Passed on a Pharoah Sanders live disk because it got so-so reviews. Can't think of the title of it right off hand.

Thank you Nate, I will keep my eyes peeled for Tompkins Square disk. Yes, KC has Sunny Murray and Wm Parker on it, who play great. It was Gayle that sort of let things down, mostly with the drab piano noodlings.

Cool. Thanks Clifford. I'm glad to hear that there's places to still get'em.

Well, funny, I had Ghetto Music in my hand today and I went up to the counter to purchase it; they keep the cd's behind the counter so when he got it, I took a look-see and wouldn't you know that there was a big ol' scratch on it. Alas, I have to wait for another copy

BN Asleep at the wheel again. Just saw this one in the store today so I know this pic is accurate. Do you notice anything missing around the logo?
-
And after one spin so far, this is definitely a strong and wild outing; which when compared to Tells Untold with Cooper-Moore, its hard to believe that this is the same guy. A word for Parker and Ibarra too, who play excellently throughout.

Is it really? Thanks for the heads up! I know a store that has it in stock-I'll have it by Thursday Picked up Touchin' on Trane today (the FMP edition) and wow! What an album! This one is way better than Kingdom Come (the only other Gayle I own) and that's not to say that KC is a bad album, its just that this one is in a different league and Parker and Ali play their asses off; their playing literally keeps you on edge. BTW, the place I picked up Tn' on T has a slew of Gayles in their bin. They have a Silkheart from which I understand is a label long, long gone and other FMP's. They even have a disk where Gayle is wearing the clown getup on the cover! Any further recommendations on the other FMP's/Silkhearts or should I just stop here

everything SAM RIVERS - whacha got?? - and talk about 'em all!
AndrewHill replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Nice thread! Don't have a whole lot (wish I had way more). I have: Fuchsia Swing Song Dimensions and Extensions Contours Crystals Vista On every date that I've heard him on so far, he always brings something special to the table. In addition, he always stands out on his sideman appearances. Dialogue and Into Somethin' stand out as immediate examples. I also dug him with Miles too. The Tokyo date is one of my favorite Miles because Sam is on it. Crystals is a staggering record. There is so much happening that after repeated listenings, I still manage to find something new. Dimensions and Extensions is interesting just to hear Donald Byrd in a free jazz blow out. Surprisingly, Contours is the most straight-forward date of the ones I owned. Vista, which just came out a couple of years ago is surprisingly more free and edgy than one might expect. I haven't played it in awhile but I think its just Sam and two percussionists. Will have to dig that one out again. Looking forward to seeing what other people have to say. -
Drivers in South Florida are nuts. I lived there for 18 years and there are basically two kinds of drivers: ones going 10mph or 100mph-no middle ground!

Its a Rare Groove featuring "Hug" Walker on drums.

Sounds like a plan to me... Plan implemented :rsmile: Played World of Cecil Taylor and NYC R&B so far today.

D.B. Cooper's Parachute Possibly Found
AndrewHill replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Always found the DB Cooper hijaking fascinating since I was a kid. Should be interesting to see what the outcome will be with this parachute. -
Hard to believe he's 79, the man seems to have endless energy. Here's to hoping he'll have many more

The credit on the cover reads Miles/Parry so I'd guess Parry took the shot. Thanks Chuck. I only have the cd and always had trouble reading the tiny credits on the booklet! What are ya, blind? Getting there! Thanks for the link Dan! :rsmile:

Does anyone know if Reid took the photo of the barbwire that is on the cover of Jimmy Raney's "A" album cover for Prestige? I'm pretty sure its his design. This is one of my favorite non BN covers Reid did.

Been gone for over a week and when I came back today, I was pleasantly surprised to see that JSngry is still posting these excellent articles and videos Keep'em comin'! Thanks for the interesting discussion that has ensued as well. Really, really dug the RRK clip! That tux and top hat that he's sportin' is just badazz. Wouldn't be adding anything new that hasn't been discussed already, but again, I really enjoyed reading this.

Was wondering about that peculiar looking bass. Is it electric/acoustic or one or the other?
