Americans are saying, "What's the thirteenth month?" Ok, I'll bite: What's the 13th month?

Sweet Rain is probably 5 or so on my list. Anyone ever compare The Penguin Guide to Jazz's 1st edition to the 4th and later editions? "Bland but occasionally beautiful, this was one of the more willowy of Get'z quartets, with Corea the probable culprit and Carter failing to save the situation..." to "This was an excellent quartet and the youthful Corea proved to be a sympathic and encouraging partner for the cantankerous leader...and Carter and Tate have the measure of the situation."

Olive Garden tonight!

Getting blasted by our first real winter storm of the year-expecting anywhere from 5-10 inches.

And it looks like they restored the original cover too! Sorry, I'm not one for Ornette's paintings... Not even the Empty Foxhole? That painting is cool! It's just a detail of something larger and probably not as cool. Don't get me wrong, I love abstract/modernist painting, but I see this as a diversifying of talents that should have stayed in the musical realm... just my .02, of course. Fair enough. I guess there must be a reason why BN chose to focus on a detail and not the whole painting

Yes, I do like Black Unity. I went back and checked all of the Sanders/Shepp/Rivers Impulse dates I own and I only have him on BU (along with Billy Hart) and Rivers' Crystals where it appears he's imbedded with a number of other persussionists. I guess he didn't make that huge of an impression on me.

Which session did ONE FOR FIVE bonus track come from?
AndrewHill replied to Dmitry's topic in Discography
I also a fan of One for Five. Turns out that I like that track best! However, if that is the only useable track, I'm satisfied to just have just One for Five only. Why spoil one track by releasing the rest of the session, if it didn't go well? -
Impulse & other 60's labels in the 70's/80's/90's
AndrewHill replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
There was McCoy Tyner's Infinity which I think came out in 1997 and was touted to be "The Next Wave of Jazz is on Impulse" instead of "The New Wave..." Impulse also released an orchestral album, of his which I cannot recall the title. Am I wrong, though, in thinking that there was a third launching of the Impuse label? If I recall correctly, Inifnity was the first album to feature a throwback to the classic design in the '60's. -

Who can we lobby to get that McLean date released? Not familiar with Connors or whether he's a good drummer, but I think I would be listening more intently to Shaw/McLean/Moncur and Washington!

I saw Larry's comments on Focus but am I missing something on Mickey One? I used to have that one but got rid of it years ago as a generally forgettable, barely serviceable soundtrack. Exactly, although there was a little bit of From The People Who Brought You Focus hype about it for a quick minute... Maybe I'm in the minority but I perfer Mickey one over Focus. There's something fresher about the arrangements and it not so lush-sounding as Focus tends to get. I have no plans of dispensing my copy of Focus because maybe it'll click later, but the clear favorite out of these two for me is Mickey One.

Glad to hear it! I was just inquiring about this movie's status not to long ago.

The Inflated Tear has more tenor sax than normal, but he does not stcik to a single instrument throughout.

Good one, with Tony Scott! Yes, I'm enjoying this one quite a bit! Is that Tony Scott? Maybe playing under a different name? The name on the back says A.J. Sciacca. Tony Scott, born Anthony Sciacca. Thanks for clearing that up! I had no idea. Upon first listen, I was saying man this cat has a way with the clarinet...now I know why! Sorry for the confusion and not following up myself! Scott appeared as Sciacca on some early recordings, also on the "Modern Jazz Society" album on Verve (on CD in the VEE series - great one, but much OOP I'm afraid). No prob King Ubu. By some stroke of luck, some guy sold a bunch of VEE's at my local used cd shop and one of those (of which I bought virtually all but two of them) was the Modern Jazz Society disk, which I got for $7! I really like this album a lot and like the Hinton, had no idea that was Scott!! Glad to hear that! I love it a lot, and for 7$ it's just a plain steal (any VEE is a steal at that prize!) You should've seen my face in the store. There was like 5 or 6 VEE's on the shelves and I think I yelled out no way! in the store. Along with the Modern Jazz Society, which is an excellent album, I picked up the Blakey, Bellson, Brown, Farmer (Listen to...) among others! I was tripping!

I have reposted my recs in the RRK recs thread.

I'd also like to heap some praise on the Jazz Corps disk, which could be had for cheap!

Good point Bill. I will repost here for the same poster mentioned, that I posted in a thread that does not have to do with RRk recommendations: "I'd suggest that that is not the best place to start with Kirk. If you really want to hear Kirk, start with 'We Free kings' (my personal favorite-Three for the Festival for me sums up Kirk's genius), 'Rip, Rig or Panic/Now Don't You Cry beautiful Edith', Domino (it has Andrew Hill on it for Christ's sake) or The Inflated Tear. In fact, as some will surely suggest, the Roland Kirk Mercury Box is an excellent place to discover Kirk, although I don't have it due to cost restrictions, I do have a few of the Mercury's as single disks and they are just terrific stuff. Kirk's a treasure and one of the most unique jazz musicians in the canon. There's so much more to recommend (Kirk's Works, Bright Moments, etc) that you will find yourself emersed in so much great music. In other words, give him another try!"

The 'I Hate Change!!' Thread
AndrewHill replied to Son-of-a-Weizen's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That was my thought-since I park downtown all the time, I'm obsessed with quarters! -
No intention to, sorry man!

Roy's good although when it comes to outfits like Brotz's Die Like a Dog Quartet, I find Campbell a poor substitute for Kondo.

I like Components for the second half of Chambers compositions. Great stuff.
