I just received my first Mosaic sets after a two year hiatus. Wow, I forgot how much fun these things are! The excited feeling when the box arrives, the fun of opening it up, pulling out the bubble wrap, opening the set, checking the booklet for the number, putting the first disc on, reading the notes. I think I'd rather skip buying individual CDs and just put my money into the box sets. Argh! I'm hooked. I need to find a Mosaic 12-step group.

I bet they know how to par-tay! I don't care, at least I got some good music and some free time.

I've got child raising duty this weekend (my wife will be at a Mary Kay convention). Fortunately my new Mosaic sets have arrived, so my son and I will work our way through the Capitol Sessions and T/K/M boxes. And we'll probably watch a lot of Spongebob too. The little guy can't get enough of that.

Thanks Sundog! That's great about your nephew. I need to pick up that Brian Setzer DVD. My son loves watching live music. He pretends he's playing the drums. I've already given him three of my guitars. I have them hanging up so he can look at them and be inspired to play. I'll hold the chords down and he strums (in time!). I'll have to pull out the Slim and Slam CDs this weekend. My son already loves those old Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant albums, so this could be something new. :rsmile:

That's great about taking it all in without rushing. I think my downfall came when I tried to get EVERYTHING before it went out of print. My wife used to joke with me that the excuse "it's going out of print" didn't mean anything to her anymore since "everything is going out of print". I truly have found that I enjoy the music much more since I gave up on trying to have everything. One that is good about my craziness in the past is now that I'm married and poorer, I have a lot of great music to enjoy now and in the future.

Noj, You need a CD Ripping program. You might be able to find one at www.download.com. I think programs like WinAmp have a ripper built in (but I'm not sure). Good luck!

Yes, I ordered the T/K/M. I had to do it. My wife is going to be out of town on Friday and Saturday and I'm on parenting duty, so this would be a great opportunity to help develop my 2 1/2 year old son's musical tastes.

I like your guitar, Lon! Didn't Bill Frissell play a Klein guitar with a similar body shape? I played in a band with a bassist who played a funky Ovation bass. It sounded good.

I can't believe I missed this thread. You guys have good taste! For me, its Beatles (1), Byrds (2), then I'd move into the San Francisco bands like: Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, Jefferson Airplane, but I can't forget Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd.... I could go on for days... This is my favorite musical era for rock. :rsmile:

Not enough! I have too many guitars and not enough time to change all the strings. 7/4, what strings are you using for your steel guitar? I have on old Rickenbacker Electro, but I have no idea what I should put on it. Also, which tuning(s) are you using?

A few years ago, I found I was spending much more time looking for and buying jazz than listening to it. It really lost its joy for me. I found that (for me), being a completist was like chasing joy. Always chasing, but never catching it. Now I just want to get into an album and live with it for awhile. No need to get every cd I can. Hell, they'll probably reissue it, in a better sounding version in the future, anyway. It's also sad for me. I've run out of space for my music, so now I can't access have of it anyway. It's in boxes.

Dippin' huh? Please elucidate. Please. It's all of Hank rolled into one, and the band is rolled in there with him. I dig Mabern on Dippin'! It's nice to see this album mentioned.

Thanks for remembering that I love the Dead, Sal! I have both the DVD and the CD set of the concert. I agree that it's a very important show for the Dead and they really shined that night. It's a cool mix of late 70's Dead and their earlier periods. They played their first "Dark Star" since '74. I guess Bill Graham had asked them if they would play some of their older material (which had been retired) and they complied. I think my favorite track is "Terrapin Station". There is a great jam. Overall, the whole show is good. Truthfully, I've listened the CDs more than I've watched the concert. It was originally aired on public broadcast so the production values are just okay. BUT, there is so little footage of the group from the seventies that it's really worth getting. One other Dead film that might be of interest is the movie, SUNSHINE DAYDREAM, from 8/27/72. This hasn't been officially released, but I found a video cd version on www.sharingthegroove.org - The quality isn't that great, but it's cool to see the band. They were on fire. So.... I give the Winterland DVD and CDs

So what's a good "Stones in the 70's and 80's" compilation?? (I like those quasi-disco things too. ) Seriously, I really don't care much for the Stones prior to 1970 (it's not bad music, it just doesn't speak to me), so what's a really good one-disc "Greatest Hits" kind of package for the Stones in the 70's and 80's??? (Something cheap off half.com would be great!!) And it's gotta have "Heartbreaker" on it, doncha know!!! Rooster, I don't think there is a straight compilation of that era. If you bought FORTY LICKS, you'd get the sixties stuff too. There used to be a compilation called MADE IN THE SHADE, but I think it only consisted of early seventies Stones.

I used to be Brian Jones period only, but now I'm all about the Mick Taylor era. I chose STICKY FINGERS, even though TSMR is a favorite too. I just love the guitar interplay. "Can You Hear Me Knocking" has become my favorite Stones track. Strangely, I've never really gotten into EXILE.

Thanks Mark, for the vote of confidence! I've tried to sample as much 1940's Capitol as I could and I've found I like a lot of it. I actually LOVE the Peggy Lee/June Christy Mosaic, so I'm someone who could really dig this set. That reminds me, I've got to get that Teagarden to you.

and... That Gretsch ain't too bad either. Is it just me, or do you have an overwhelming urge to buy a Gretsch everytime you see Brian Setzer play? Thanks Sundog! Yeah, I feel the same way when I see Setzer. I really dig the ebony fretboard on my Gretsch. I like how it plays.

Sundog, The truth is, I've never had the chance to play really nice jazz guitars, so I'd probably change my tune after some time with them. I've always been impressed when I see jazz cats like Ed Bickert play Teles. As for amps, since I'm not in any kind of working group right now, I mainly play through my brown '62 Fender Princeton (which has a tremelo from beyond) or through a silverface Champ. When I need more watts, I'll probably get what you have, the Deluxe Reverb reissue. I LOVE Deluxe's. I just wish I could afford a tweed 50's model. I used to play through Fender Twins, but that's just overkill for me nowadays. I'd love one of the Fender Custom Shop or boutique amps, but they're waaaay out of my price range.

I'm like you Jim, I've never stuck with one guitar exclusively. I've found that as I've been involved in different groups, I like to play a "fresh" guitar. So my guitars are like markers from my musical life. I've really been on a buying, selling, trading spree the last couple years. I now have a collection of guitars that I LOVE. One thing that I have done in the past is given away guitars. Not my best guitars, but ones that I never really bonded with and weren't too expensive. Doing this has brought me a lot of joy. I'd love to start a program to equip kids/teenagers with guitars.
