  1. I picked up my copy tonight. I've read the liner notes but have kept myself from listening to it until tomorrow (Sunday). I'm really looking forward to it. :rsmile: :rsmile:
  2. Rooster Ties, That would be GREAT!!! I've never had a chance to hear Dance With Death.
  3. I plan on making a cd out of my LP copy of Andrew Hill's One For One. I have the Mosaic set, so I would just burn the 1969 session. I'd be glad to add that. :rsmile:
  4. John B, Psychic friends!
  5. My favorite series of alternates occurs on disc 1 of the Sam Rivers Mosaic set. The four versions of Downstairs Blues Upstairs are quite interesting as a piece. I listen to them often. It would be great if BN reissued Fuschia Swing Song with these alternates included. :rsmile:
  6. Thanks Rooster Ties!!!! I really appreciate it. I've already been thinking about it all morning. I'll do you proud. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  7. When we started the AOtW, I was against using Polls to choose it. I was more concerned that we'd go round and round and never have an answer. I figured we'd end up with a thread where we all were throwing out suggestions. By having a person selected to choose the album, we avoid going in circles and it is fun to have the ability to choose an album you really love. I have to say that I'm all for mixing polls like this with the choice of the AOtW, but if the person who has been selected to choose the AOtW doesn't want to do it this way, that's cool too. If I ever get the opportunity to pick, I'll probably do it the same way. I'll narrow down my desired albums and then post a poll. What's also nice about doing it this way is that we can build up anticipation for the AOtW. I feel like I'm watching a horserace now. "Grass Roots has passed Jacknife on the outside...." :rsmile:
  8. In anticipation of Black Market being album of the week, I picked up a new copy of Weather Report: The Jaco Years compilation on Sony for $2.60 yesterday (the local Wherehouse record store is blowing everything out at 80% off). I still need to buy my copy of Black Market, but I'm getting into the right mood now. :rsmile: :rsmile:
  9. You guys are right. The first 12 came with a white tray. After those 12, BN started using the clear tray and listing the titles underneath it. Here's the list of the titles that didn't have the clear tray. (Thanks to couw, for the list!) SERIES I (1994) Ornette Coleman – The Empty Foxhole Don Cherry – Symphony for Imrovisers Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore – Blowing in from Chicago Kenny Dorham – Whistle Stop Freddie Redd – “The Connection” Andrew Hill - Judgement J.R. Monterose – S/T Bobby Hutcherson – Components Wayne Shorter – The All-Seeing Eye Johnny Griffin – The Congregation Tina Brooks – True Blue Baby Face Willette – Stop and Listen :rsmile:
  10. This would be a great Album of the Week in the future, when it is more readily available. I've been following this thread and now I want to go out and find a copy of it. :rsmile:
  11. Rooster Ties, It's cool that you're choosing your AOtW this way. It adds another element of fun to the AOtW. :rsmile:
  12. I would also give Black Lion a try. They have some great sets. Speaking of Berkshire Record Outlet, have any of you picked up any of those classical boxsets on the Brilliant Classics Label? I got a few of them and I've been very happy with them. They average out to about $2 a cd. I picked up a 40 cd set of Mozart, Wagner's Ring, some Bach sets. I want to pick up the Haydn set sometime. :rsmile:
  13. I bet we'll get a very lively discussion with this one. I've never been a fan of fusion. I enjoy most of the electric Miles stuff before his retirement in 1975 and some McLaughlin, but I haven't gotten into much of the other fusion of the period. I enjoy Wayne Shorter during his period with Miles and his solo stuff up to the early seventies, beyond that, his music hasn't done a lot for me. I want to have my perceptions change. I know I've been narrowminded in the past and I'm trying to rectify that. I'm sure we'll also have some lively discussions about Jaco. He really brought a new way of playing bass into the picture. I am going to pick up this cd and listen with the most open mind I can possibly have. I really look forward to understanding this music. I look forward to learning about this album. :rsmile:
  14. If others are interested, we could create a thread where we ONLY list the future albums of the week. That way we could have the list in one place and the nomination and choosing process would be simplified. I'll set it up if you guys want. :rsmile:
  15. Maybe we could choose the AOtW further in advance to help with this problem? What if we choose the albums for the next month and then make sure that we are always aware of what we are going to listen to for the following month. Any thoughts?
  16. On the main page (the one with all the forums listed), near the bottom, there is an area named board statistics. This number of postings is right below the information on the users. :rsmile:
  17. Thanks MWTGA! I'm over at emusic.com working on your list. :rsmile: :rsmile:
  18. I've been digging Don Patterson's Boppin' & Burnin' today. McPherson is blowin' away. This cd has an interesting group on it: Patterson on organ, Howard McGhee on trumpet, McPherson on alto, Pat Martino on guitar, Billy James on drums. This is an album in which the title doesn't lie. :rsmile:
  19. Rooster Ties, I'm just bringing up questions I've thought of. I would never want to put so many rules on the thing that the AoTW stops being fun. I've been looking forward to it every week. I'm finding myself being opened up to new things. I agree about Conns being cool. I think anything up to $18.99 is reasonable, but I was just concerned for those on a tight budget. Heck, I'm always looking for an excuse to buy something new. couw, Your point about time is a good one. I haven't had the time to participate as much as I'd like either. I'm still on disc one of the Lee Morgan. I think multi-disc sets are hard to get into in only a week. Alexander, I'm glad you're still following the AoTW. You were one of the first ones to show enthusiasm about doing it in the first place. I'd love to hear your perspective more on the AoTW. :rsmile:
  20. You guys will probably laugh at me, but I'm thinking of buying a Playstation 1. They're only $49 bucks and the games are cheap. I haven't played video games since I had my Sega Genesis 10 years ago, so I don't know what I've been missing.
  21. Wow! In only a month-and-a-half, 10,000 posts. Who would have thunk it? Thanks for such a great board, B3-er and Organissimo!
  22. Noj, I haven't heard the Kool and the Gang they have. Time to do some downloading. Bring on da' funk! Thanks! :rsmile:
  23. I have all the albums you list, so I'm not really representative of your target for your poll, but I would be happy with any of your choices. I've gotten used to the voices on Lift Every Voice too, but I'm concerned that there might be some who couldn't get past them. I would love to have the Complete "IS" Sessions also. I think the price may be prohibitive for some. If price wasn't a problem, it would be my first choice here. This cd really surprised me. I didn't think I'd like it so much. I feel like a kid in a candy store trying to choose the best one. It's too hard, they'd all be good. I think if it came down to it for me, I'd go with Grass Roots, Structurally Sound or Jacknife due to the price not being too high. The Hancock would be good, but I would like to spend some time with some of the other albums since I've already listened to the Prisoner a lot already. This brings up a good question about the scope of the album of the week. Should it be a midline title? Should it be an album that is easily available? A classic title? Are connoisseurs okay? Sometimes, I wish we had a couple albums of the week going at the same time. One for pre-1980's, and one for newer stuff, etc... The problem would be that it would limit participation because we wouldn't be able to participate in both the threads at the same time due to the expense. Good luck! :rsmile:
  24. You're welcome! I've been doing the same thing with emusic. I have hundreds of cds of mp3 albums that I've downloaded. The problem is: I don't have all the cds labeled, so I don't know what's on them. OOOF!!!
  25. Noj, I'd recommend Blackstone Legacy. My listening for today is: Jazz: John Patton - Understanding Don Patterson - Boppin' & Burnin' Non-Jazz: Del McCoury Band - Del and the Boys (bluegrass) Elliot Smith - either/or :rsmile:
