Allen There's an "Ed Sneed" on bass in 3 Savoy sessions (Wilbur Harrison, Annie Laurie, Big Maybelle), all from 1956. He also recorded with Jimmie Lunceford's orchestra in the late 40s (after JL's death, I think). He also appears (I guess it's the same person) as Edward Snead with reedman Ben Smith in the late 40s. No recordings with Billie Holiday in my copy of Bruyninckx, though. Hope this helps. Fernando

Perhaps not the best Goodman on record, but still there are moments that are remarkable (and even more so because of the special occasion), like Krupa's break on the first tune, Ziggy Elman's solo on "... Rockies", the very famous Jess Stacy solo on "Sing, Sing, Sing", or Lester Young's solo on "Honeysuckle Rose" (his first ever at the Hall?) Avakian's remark about the missing half minute made me curious (Schaap's mistake there is quite something), and I'm trying to establish whether there's a single issue that is really complete (not taking into account the skip in Buck Clayton's solo on "Honeysuckle Rose"). Yes, many thanks for that! I've noticed those come from the 3-CD version. That I've already checked, and it seems to come from the LP (or the first Columbia CD issue). The ones I need to check exactly are: This (Avid AMBX 151), and This (Definitive DRCD 11378_2) I've tried to buy the mp3 from CDUniverse and it won't let me (I'm in the wrong country, apparently). Thanks! F

Hello everyone, I'm comparing several issues of the Carnegie Hall concert regarding completeness, not so much audio quality (the Jasmine is way better than the Schaap), and I'm missing the Definitive and the newer 4-CD Avid issue. Could anyone send me mp3s of "Honeysuckle Rose" and "I Got Rhythm" from those two issues? I've already compared the older Columbia CD, the newer Schaap and the Jasmine. So far I can tell you that the Jasmine also misses those 27 seconds from "I Got Rhythm". Email is: fer_urbina[at]yahoo.com Thanks in advance! F

Received it just now. Don't know when I'll be able to give it a proper spin. Soon, I hope. Thanks, Allen! F

I know! Somehow my radar managed to avoid these 2002 reissues, in spite of them including personal favourites like Boyd Raeburn with extra tracks. I don't think they were widely distributed in Europe, and the search engine at the SavoyJazz website is not very good. The Dizzy and Norvo sets are the best for this material IMHO (have picked them for a friend), and I don't think we'll see this kind of reissues (like the Eckstine set) for a long time, if ever. F

Big Beat Steve, those are not strictly the *complete* trio recordings of Eddie Costa. An interesting 2-CD could have been made with those two albums, plus bits and pieces like a trio with Oscar Pettiford and Ed Thigpen, and other tracks taken from Shelly Manne's 2 3 4, Don Bagley's Jazz on the Rocks, and the live Newport '57 album (although for one unissued trio track on that one, access would be needed to any of the tape sets extant from that gig). This reissue was made by LoneHill, and the Jubilee LP had been indeed reissued by Fresh Sound in vinyl and CD. So, no connection there: as far as I know (which is not much), as Brownie said, Fresh Sound/Blue Moon/Absolute Distribution are *not* LoneHill, Definitive, etc. As things stand now, Fresh Sound is fulfilling the 50-year ban for reproduction rights. LoneHill and the rest, don't. FS is officially based in Spain, which would mean that they pay SGAE (the Spanish equivalent of ASCAP, BMI, or MCPS) for author's rights. LoneHill, Definitive and all the rest are officially based in Andorra, and although the 50-year rule applies there too, they tend to ignore that rule - it's probably easier to ignore it without risk, and I don't know whether there's an authors' society to collect royalties, but even if there is, controls are probably more relaxed than in Spain. F PS FWIW, I think the Uptown rip-offs were made solely by Definitive. PPS Someone mentioned the Mainstream label. AFAIK Bob Shad's daughter has the original tapes for that label (and Time) and should be the ideal source for any reissues.

A list of Signature 78s F Edit for typo
-
Somehow connected to this subject I guess: FOPP, in Cambridge Circus (Shaftesbury Ave/Charing Cross Rd) is carrying a sizeable bunch of RVGs for 3 quid each. Mainly regular fare with a few surprises. Not a single Copy Protection in sight, I should add. I'm not connected with the shop in any way, besides the typical scavenging. F
-
Oh yes, the Signatures deserve a proper reissue, if only for those Coleman Hawkins sides, like The Man I Love. Whether it's viable is a whole different story F

For Russell and Potter can't you use Gottlieb's? I understand they're public domain (from February 16th). F

Complete list of Impulse 20-bit digipacks (IMPD)?
Fer Urbina replied to peterintoronto's topic in Discography
Cannot check now, but I'm fairly sure Out of the Cool as IMP 11862 was 20-bit, no? Into the Hot definitely wasn't (MCD 39014). Also, about Ray Charles, if I'm not mistaken he kept ownership of the ABC-Paramount masters and that's why reissues of his ABC stuff come out elsewhere (Rhino) and not GRP or Universal? (Sorry to digress, but just read here that Concord is reissuing Genius + Soul = Jazz "in cooperation with the Ray Charles Foundation") F -

Kenton Presents: Sal Salvador is part of the Connoisseur CD Sal Salvador Quintet/Quartet Tom 1960 started this thread with, that's why I didn't mention it in my post above. Thanks for pointing this out. Was unaware of that reissue. Another BN Conn that has eluded me. Never saw it! I have this date on the BN 10-incher that came out in 1975 when BN/UA rereleased the BLP5000 series in exact replica. Very good reissue. Crisp sound plus liner notes include an interview with Salvador, not long before he died. Discographical info on it has been corrected in latest Ruppli Capitol discography (on CD-ROM, released by Names&Numbers). Amazon.com sells it as a CD-R. F PS Incidentally, I have this as an AFRS 16-inch disc...

The LoneHill double CD has all the quartet recordings with Costa (1 Capitol, 3 Bethlehems), plus the recordings with Frank Socolow (also on Bethlehem - all those Bethlehem recordings have been reissued in Japan, the Capitol was part of the Blue Note Connoisseur series, c. 1998). I underline "quartet", because only part of Shades of Salvador was recorded with the quartet. The rest has horns too (Eddie Bert, Phil Woods, etc), or Costa is absent. Fresh Sound reissued the Colors In Sound (original Decca). Personally, I think that in those 1950s recordings with Costa, Salvador had immaculate technique but relied too much on certain licks, and could be a bit repetitive. Salvador started the quartet with Costa in late 1953, after he left Kenton. First recordings were in the summer of 1954. F PS Edit to add that the small group arrangements by Bill Holman and Manny Albam are very interesting. "Yesterdays", as pointed out by Brownie, is especially good, with Salvador and Costa playing different lines in different directions (Salvador down, Costa, on vibes, up). PPS Spotify users can listen to the whole set here.
