  1. I am ignoring all these ezz-thetics reissues. There are some some interesting new releases in the series, however - which is what the label was relaunched for, after all (I doubt Uehlinger went out of retirement to reissue Charlie Parker Dial sides). This new one looks tasty, for example: I recently got Alex Hendriksen / Fabian Gisler "The Song Is You", (ezz-thetics release from 2019) and it's an excellent tenor / bass duo playing standards, recorded in 2018. Samples here: https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/art/alex-hendiksen-song-is-you/hnum/9270808
  2. Clementi - Demidenko on Hyperion. Good stuff.

  4. I read the story about that session in Max Bolleman´s book "Sounds", he was the owner of the studio where most of the Timeless records were made. It was a terrible stress on that session because of the very unruly and uncoperative behaviour of Woody Shaw, and even worse, of his then girlfriend. But the music was great which is astonishing under those terrible circumstances. Yes, good tunes and everybody plays with great energy. I am not much of a Woody Shaw fan, but I think is one of his best. This one and "In My Own Sweet Way" are the only Woody Shaw dates I return to often. And gotta get this Boleman book.
  5. Enjoying Sand Storm by Kaze (Christian Pruvost, Natsuki Tamura - trumpet, Satoko Fujii - piano, Peter Orins - drums) with Ikue Mori a lot. bandcamp: https://satokofujii.bandcamp.com/album/sand-storm-2 or https://kaze2.bandcamp.com/album/sand-storm - or even cheaper, from the label directly: https://www.circum-disc.com/kaze-ikue-mori-sand-storm/ . Or streaming at Apple Music. Whichever way, excellent stuff. A side note: is Apple Music the crappiest streaming app there is or what? They have more good stuff than Amazon and Spotify, but man their interface and functionality suck.

  7. I ordered that IST set some time ago - looking forward to it. I got this new release on bandcamp - https://michaelmooreramboy.bandcamp.com/album/amulet - sweet clarinet / bass duos by Michael Moore and Paul Berner.
  8. Victo releases (at least some of them) are available for streaming at Apple Music. This 1996 concert surely looks interesting. It was recorded at the same time as Parker / Namtchylak duo "Mars Song" (https://www.discogs.com/Evan-Parker-Sainkho-Namtchylak-Mars-Song/release/2319139). And that stuff is scary.
  9. How "major" was Bach during his lifetime? He was definitely not obscure, has managed to get quite a few of his works published (with one Mr. Handel of London pre-odering a copy of I forgot which work exactly) but was he as well known and regarded as his contemporaries Handel, Telemann and Vivaldi?
  10. We should start a thread about lesser-known baroque composers...
  11. Ghost dance . Wasn't it ghost trance? Trans-dance, ghost-chance, whatever. I remember the only GTM release of Braxton (of what I have heard, I have not heard everything, Lord have mercy) I found semi-decent was Four Compositions (GTM) 2000 on Delmark. But even Braxton's more interesting '70s stuff is compositionally quite weak (IMHO). There are dozens of jazz musicians who write more interesting tunes. Just off the top of my head, because I was listening to him today - Guus Janssen. But Braxton gives numbers to his compositions and dedicates them to Stockhausen, Partch and like and wears a turtle-neck sweater (not to forget pipe-smoking), so he is a big composer.
  12. Yes, major albums both - I like the one sans Bailey slightly more. It's on Spotify, will give it a go. Breathing life into Braxton's stodgy lifeless compositions is no easy feat, so I am curious how Thomas & Co. fare. Moreover, the music is recorded at the excellent local Austrian festival (about one hour drive from Vienna, right on the border with Hungary) that I used to attend (not in 2006 when this performance took place, later). Remember live music?
  13. Been perusing Damon Smith downloads, and this one - Jeff Platz, Stephen Haynes, Matt Crane, Damon Smith "Theory of Colors" - is very nice: https://umlandrecords.bandcamp.com/album/theory-of-colors Beautifully recorded too.
  14. Both Wiley / Angola Project albums are available for streaming at Apple Music.
  15. Still intend to go through all 1982 stuff I have, but wanted to highlight this one separately - Tony Coe "Tournée Du Chat" (nato), recorded 1981-82. Fantastic stuff.
  16. Judging by how it is taking off on Spotify, this is likely to be Sanders's most popular album - by a wide margin. Not even a bit?
  17. The composition and arrangement are way too cute (Morton Feldman cheesified), but Sanders's playing - as well as the way his gorgeous sound is captured - are excellent.
  18. Oh, remembered another hip-hop album I liked - Flying Lotus "You're Dead". It's not jazz, just has some jazz elements.
  19. As for successful hip-hop / jazz crossovers, have you heard this one? https://stevelehman.bandcamp.com/album/s-l-b-yone I don't like rap, but I thought this one was very good.
  20. Can't be too bad, right? Just released on Creative Works Records.
  21. Luca Francesconi. Great stuff.
  22. Thanks for recommending Laderman and Spies - never heard of either. Listening to Laderman's piano works on Amazon, good stuff. Wuorinen... I have a couple of Koch releases. I also think they will not survive the next cull.
  23. Excellent stuff. https://sunnysiderecords.bandcamp.com/album/acrobat-music-for-and-by-dmitri-shostakovich
  24. Warner is also releasing a Stravinsky box. A lot of historical recordings here.
