  1. First of all, this definitely has been discussed multiple times: Second, developing a career as a female jazz musician is an interesting subject when it comes to earlier generations (I am sure that somebody like Irène Schweizer has a few stories to tell), but I am fairly certain that younger female musicians would not appreciate or even understand why they are being talked about as "female musicians".
  2. What a strange discussion to have in 2021. There are more excellent female jazz musicians than ever before. There is nothing exotic or particularly distinctive about being a female player anymore. Are we going to have a thread for tall jazz musicians next? Grumbling aside, I like Ikue Mori and Shayna Dulberger (an excellent bassist, not sure if she's active anymore: https://chriswelcome.bandcamp.com/album/wound-unwound-and-within).
  3. Thanks! If remastering is not done by Ultra-Vybe this is excellent news, as far as I am concerned. I stayed away from these Enja reissues but now might pick a couple. Very true.
  4. Would you be so kind to check with Herr Winckelmann if this new batch is also remastered by Ultra-Vybe? I find the Ultra-Vybe remastering just horrible...
  5. There is an excellent jazz club here in Vienna called Porgy & Bess. The sound there is excellent and some of the recordings made in the club saw commercial release:
  6. Thanks, put that one in.
  7. Since this topic was started I collected quite a few of these (German editions), and they do sound excellent indeed. Was just listening to "Crescent" the other day - the drums sound is gorgeous. Thanks Late and others for bringing this up. Does anybody know by chance if the 1988 US edition of "Into the Hot", catalog number MCAD-39104 ( https://www.discogs.com/The-Gil-Evans-Orchestra-Into-The-Hot/release/2256736 ) uses the same mastering as 1987 German and Japanese releases? I assume yes.
  8. Enjoyed this one a lot (read abut it on your blog).
  9. It's there: https://open.spotify.com/album/6twcAIiSaa4QFnVLRBduEQ?highlight=spotify:track:5thv9QFTBhTFpoouqLIT8v& , but only three tracks are playable here in Austria (might be different depending on the territory - it is determined by the rights holder). There is a label search function, but it is no good. Google is a better option. Correct, stuff might and does disappear from streaming (I remember how disappointed I was when all the Glossa label (classical music) releases vanished - although they did reappear a year or so later). Having said that, the general tendency is for more stuff to be posted on streaming services all the time. You even have technological leapfrogging where albums that were LP-only appear on streaming without ever being reissued on CD (ECM / JAPO releases, MPS, etc.). Some albums are available in multiple remastered versions - e.g. there is a standard RVG of "The Rumproller": https://open.spotify.com/album/1KJRRyWB8xgLzWjsJJ9ytk and a (great-sounding) Japanese 2014 version: https://open.spotify.com/album/3dMhT1ZhEeYk9NwzPAzi3u . Many Mosaics are on Spotify, btw. I started a thread with direct links, since they are not always easy to find: Amazon and Apple (as well as some smaller streaming platforms) offer HD or ultra-HD formats, I am sure Spotify will follow soon. Apple has more jazz (e.g. CIMP / Cadence releases are only on Apple). I think they give better deal to the rights holders, hence more music. I personally hate their interface, though. An interesting streaming / download option for new releases in bandcamp. I see that many artists and small labels increasingly bypass large streaming platforms and go for bandcamp instead (interestingly, a typical new release option is "LP / bandcamp download now"). But bandcamp is less relevant for older stuff.
  10. Some (all?) of the Uptown releases are available on Spotify, for example: https://open.spotify.com/album/5jm3f8ilV6JeRfQwazrQYy https://open.spotify.com/album/3HmId4JnvKzo7uYtsW58r5 https://open.spotify.com/album/5PmINzhQnTY2LiVEjN45cd https://open.spotify.com/album/14YybWMkLui3ybJ7KScsEH
  11. Matt said he is not willing to record more than one album per week.
  12. Yeah, even more so when there is some silly "band" name.
  13. Old, old news (2016, gosh), but I just stumbled upon this one, and have been enjoying it immensely: https://open.spotify.com/album/1FhPcficpQobaXNbwxALso (Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/8163771 ). Btw, looks like Mikroton Recordings is no more. Their releases are available on streaming, but if you are into physical objects, do not delay.
  14. I am not too knowledgeable of Beresford's music, but I like this one a lot: http://www.emanemdisc.com/E5032.html
  15. He did it to Paul Bley too : Bley, in his subdued Hawaiian, stands no chance. The music is so-so, btw. How did you like this one? I listend to it just once 15 years ago or so, thought it was noisy crap.
  16. In case you guys have not seen it, you san subscribe to Astral Spirits at bandcamp for $15 / month, and immediately receive 50 (!) back-catalog items and all the new stuff they release as long as your subscription is running. And yes, nobody prevents you from canceling your subscription immediately after you pay your first $15 and download 50 albums. Not cool, though . 17. OK, got back from the post office. The €45 tax-free threshold for private gifts seems to work (Hans, the Netherlands customs seems to confirm as much: https://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/bldcontenten/belastingdienst/individuals/abroad_and_customs/receiving_goods_from_abroad/ ). In my case, I was charged VAT because the sender did not indicate his name, so the customs could not confirm the package is from an individual (as opposed to a company). What's annoying is that on top of the VAT there is a €5 "processing" fee charged by the post here.
  18. Well, I can always fall back on "Kinda Green" by Djll / Perkis - I am the only person who bought this one. https://djll.bandcamp.com/album/kinda-green
  19. Please don't, got to keep my rebel status intact. Will send you the full edition of Backstreet Boys for cooperation. Traveling to Austria from the US is relatively trouble-free, but UK is actually in the "red" zone, not sure how the Brits (Steve Beresford and Pat Thomas) will manage. Don't care about Thomas too much, but really would like to see Steve Beresford.
  20. 6-CD set? Severe case of braxonitis?
  21. There is a 20% discount on this Webber / Morris big band recording at bandcamp valid till the end of the day today (August 8th) , the coupon is bcaugust20 Just bought me a copy. https://webbermorrisbigband.bandcamp.com/album/both-are-true Btw, this looks like quite a popular release on bandcamp - bought around 1000 times. With my going pop, I feel the need to question my values. Normally the stuff I buy is summarily ignored at bandcamp, reinforcing my image of a true rebel. For example, the most wonderful "Flockterkit" by Aram Shelton ( https://singlespeedmusic.bandcamp.com/album/flockterkit ) I bought recently is "in 4 other collections". Regarding live music, I am considering attending the Konfrontationen festival next week. I normally don't like festivals - too much music at one go for me, but just check out this line-up: https://www.konfrontationen.at/ko21/#
  22. Was it sent von einer Privatperson?
  23. Well, the Austrian customs page is fairly straightforward on this: Für private Geschenksendungen besteht die Abgabenfreiheit bis zu einem Warenwert von 45 Euro. I will probably go to the post office to retrieve my packages (one from UK another from Switzerland) tomorrow, let's see what they say. Will report.
  24. Well, the only thing I received was notification from the post office that I should come pick up my package - and pay some fee. Let's see what it is, I will try to get it reimbursed. Fun to ensue.
