  1. I've listened to it many years ago. If my memory serves me correctly, this session is definitely not the highlight of Hawk's career.
  2. John, IMHO Shepp, Rudd & Moncur sound as good as they were in 1966 when they recorded Mama Too Tight.
  3. This is probably one of the best CDs I recently bought. After more than 30 years apart, Archie Shepp & Roswell Rudd decided to record again and to show us that the old chemistry is still working. Reggie Workman on bass, Andrew Cyrille on drums and Grachan Moncur III on trombone, all of them are doing also a perfect job. Strongly recommended.
  4. Sounds promising.
  5. They were broadcasts that Ellington did for the Treasury Department in 1945 (continuing into 1946, I think) encouraging people to buy war bonds (later re-titled "Victory Bonds" after Japan surrendered. There are a number of tunes that Ellington rarely performed after 1945 (such as "Blutopia"), some pop songs of the day, and a fair amount of Ducal songbook staples. Lots of performances of The Black, Brown and Beige Suite... and peppered with Duke pitching for war bonds. Many of the shows were done on the road (I'm particularly taken with V. 6, which contains a broadcast from Evansville, Indiana). The liner notes are generally pretty good, done by several longtime Duke connoisseurs. You can find them online for $20-$21 (including shipping) or order them directly from Storyville. Thank you for the information David. I've just ordered vol. 1 in order to get an impression.
  6. Anything by Thad Jones & Mel Lewis big band.
  7. Another recommended store is My Music, but sometimes they are more expensive than djangos.
  8. djangos. Free shipping when you order over $25, good prices, used CDs in a good shape, wishlist, "Notify Me" system which allows you to request an e-mail alert when ‘out-of-stock’ titles become available, what else can we ask for???
  9. Miles, Coltrane and Mingus are the recommendations for tomorrow.
  10. May I ask you what's the reason for selling this treasure???
  11. Two of my favorite pianists are celebrating their birthday today: Taylor is 76 and Kuhn is 61. I spent countless number of hours listening to their music. Today is a good opportunity to thank them for their music and to wish both of them all the best.
  12. I voted for *So What*.
  13. Ella Fitzgerald- Concerts Year, 4 CDs set.
  14. I am not a Baker or Mulligan fan, but I like the music they played together.
