OK hipsters, be honest. Who amongst you knew of Rodriguez
Adam replied to robertoart's topic in Artists
The documentary is "Searching for Sugar Man." played in Los Angeles a week or two ago, and I missed it, alas. Hope to catch it somehow soon. -
I'm excited by this and will get it. Just throwing a hypothetical question out there. If you had a Mingus set with a hole in it, wouldn't you first think of checking the Mingus Archives at the Library of Congress? Why didn't they or Sue think of that?

http://tinyurl.com/cnb8gya http://www.lemonde.fr/culture/article/2012/07/30/mort-du-realisateur-chris-marker_1740096_3246.html It is hard for me to express how much his films, and how he viewed the world, history, thought, culture, and the possibilities of cinema have affected me. If you haven't seen a bunch of his films, set out now to view them. More than Le Jetee, his global seeking essay films and his political films are remarkable. Several are available in the US on DVD from Icarus Films, and La Jetee and Sans Soleil from Criterion. Rest in Peace. The world will be a poorer place. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. (P.S. No jazz in La Jetee)

Probably 9/11 plane 2, and the 1992 LA riots. Heard Nixon's resignation on radio, and assassination attempt on Reagan announced after the fact by loudspeaker in a school class. Sports, for me, native Angeleño, probably Kirk Gibson's home run game 1 1988 world series, watching on big screen in common room in college dorm, no one else caring, me yelling.

And the Olympic flame is not visible outside the stadium. Dummies.

Saw it, will get, but haven't yet. Anyone else get it yet? Blue Notes in Black and White: Photography and Jazz by Benjamin Cawthra (Oct 1, 2011) One I did get which is a nice photo book is a new one with Bob Willoughby's photos & comments: Jazz: Photographs and Recollections by Bob Willoughby (Jun 15, 2012) It includes his classic photos with Big Jay McNeely at the Olympic Auditorium from 1951 as well It's selling pretty cheap, but it's a nice hardcover slip-covered book with ribbon and it seems like pretty good quality paper.

Time to get Carter-Bradford. Debating the Benny Goodman or Braxton. Need to see if that's the Duke set I have or the one I don't.

My receiver died and I need a new one. Running into issues finding one. I think I'd like under $1000. Inputs needed for Turntable, CD, Blu-Ray, VHS, Cassette Stereo out is all I need at this time. An HDMI input would be nice but isn't necessary. There's an Outlaw, the art deco one, 2150, that seems perhaps about right, but it is one short in inputs (nothing for VHS, unless I can use the Electronic processing input for it, but I'm not yet clear that I can.) Any recommendations? Not looking for (can't afford) top of the line.

Congrats! And how can they announce this poll in June? Still half the year to go. -
R&B artists with jazz backgrounds
Adam replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Big Jay McNeely. Started out in jazz with a BeBop trio Sonny Criss & Hampton Hawes, but changed over to R&B. -
I'm mixed on it. Side question - why did you put an apostrophe in the thread title in the word "Changes"? It's not a possessive.
-
One reason is that, as far as I understand it, Ace has actually bought the masters for several labels - definitely a couple of the smaller Los Angeles-based R&B labels, so they really can do them right. A shame that no company in America was up for obtaining this important music, but at least Ace does right by it.

Big Jay McNeely- full concert, 2012
Adam replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I'm doing a documentary on Big Jay. Followed him on a Europe tour last summer. Need to raise money to finish it. But he's playing on a cruise this week; to Chicago next week. Been filming with him a lot, but not for a while. He just turned 85. Check out the site on the film: www.bigjayfilm.com -

I'll try to ask Steve Isoardi about those recordings and their current status.

I did go to Havana in December 2000. We might have met in NYC as well, but when would that have been? I've been on this board since the start pretty much.

The second one is very good. Addresses the wider African-American arts scene of the period, positioning Tapscott and UMGAA within that, with similarities in philosophy and methodology with writers and other artists.

Which sister? The one I knew, Elaine Dundy, died a few years ago. Betty Lorwin Thank you. I never communicated with her.

Ah, heck. I had a long phone conversation with him last year, and he was quite the thoughtful and unusual character.

There we go; the next 4. I have a few of the Billy Bang albums but only one of the Abrams. I do have the George Russell box and have been pretty pleased with that purchased.
-
I hope they might still do a Muhal Richard Abrams box.

Hi, An opinion. I've never heard of Joe Daley before. And I'm not totally ignorant. Would I sample one CD based on board recommendations? Sure. Would I buy a $50 box set of someone whom I'm never heard of? Not a chance. I honestly would say that without a marketing campaign, you need to start with a single CD release. If that goes well, release an additional double, or two more singles. I would buy almost any single release you put out, like I bought the Hemphill & Dixon.
