Got the LP but looking forward to this. It's a strong session. I have a radio broadcast with Chris Amberger on bass from a few years earlier that's awesome as well (although admittedly kinda lo-fi).

Yeah, I stopped keeping doubles+ of albums years ago, even ESP cover variations. The only double I did keep was a Barry Guy solo on Incus with an original Alan Davie print set into the cover design as a 'custom' job. -

Yeah, I just can't bring myself to buy those MM titles. I have a stereo Liberty that I've owned for many years - pulled it out recently and it didn't sound or look as good as I remembered (I think my young ears didn't mind the surface noise, counterintuitively). -

Those Freedom Unity LPs are extremely rare. Never even seen Something for sale other than the CD reissue. Destination Out! is one of the best jazz records ever. Could use a cleaner copy myself, but what can you do...? -

Bill Dixon - 7-tette - (Savoy, US orig) -
Except as a basic violation of privacy, perhaps? Of course, what constitutes "privacy" these days, right? I'm of two minds on this. In part I want to applaud someone for holding out on the possibility that a million-dollar deal might come through, because the music is high quality and people deserve to be paid well more than they are for their art. But I also think that pushing away good deals because one wants a million dollars is foolish, and people will find a way to release music and charge money for it with or without you.

Not a slight. I don't know the specifics of his business, that's all.

I assume that I***e pulled it? The thing is, she keeps thinking she should do these archival issues herself, but then has no money nor bandwidth to do them. So she's out potential royalties and we don't get to hear the music. Of course, it's her right, but it seems like a bad way of doing business - especially when someone like Martin Davidson is there to do things more or less "above board." I don't think that you get to complain about bootlegs and file sharing when you refuse to have the stuff in your (or others') possession released.

Bill Dixon (October 5, 1925-June 16, 2010)

Same here. He gave me a huge artist's proof litho that hangs above my bed. I always go to sleep hoping that it's permeating my brain somehow. -
Trumpeter, composer, painter and educator Bill Dixon was born on this day in 1925 (he passed in 2010). I got to know him fairly well over the course of two separate articles and interviews, the second of which involved staying in Bennington for a week in advance of his Firehouse12 recordings. Certainly a significant influence on my thinking about this music, I owe him a lot and think about him often. Happy Birthday, Bill.

You mean Waldron's unreleased "Candy Girl" album with members of the Lafayette Afro Rock Band ? I didn't know Mal didn't play on it. Still would love to find a copy (there are promo's). At that time, the Calumet label was distributed by Discodis, not by Jaubert's Musidisc (see the back cover of "Church Number Nine"). On the other hand, music from the same session (a track also called "Church number nine") was released on Noah Howard's "Space Dimension", which was released some time earlier on the America label (part of Musidisc) and produced by Jaubert. It's always a bit complex in France... Yeah, that's the Waldron I'm referring to. I've got a couple of America LPs that have Discodis logos too. Weird. It's all a mess indeed. Agreed, that track was also included on the Japanese Odeon LP "Church Number Nine" and I'm pretty sure it was all from the same recording session. -

I always figured it was a way to fudge sales and/or losses. -
Georges Arvanitas, Jacky Samson and Charles Saudrais... though I guess most of their recorded work is from the '70s, part of In Concert (Futura) is from '69.

I used to think Calumet was a private label too, but it's a Pierre Berjot/Jaubert (take your pick) imprint. All of those labels - Carson, America, etc. - shared artists and releases and were manufactured and distributed by Musidisc. As near as I can tell, he was the dude running the show and didn't seem to be paying anybody either. -

I have an original of that Frank Wright - excellent album. I recall it being a pretty loud pressing. The new Calumet reissue is a bootleg; Calumet was a subsidiary of Musidisc France, which also owned the America label. Their catalog was pretty small, with a handful of blues titles and a library funk title spotlighting the music of Mal Waldron (although Mal doesn't play on it). -
You're right - bizarrely, it seems never to have been on CD, not even in Japan. Been a while since I gave it a spin but found it very enjoyable on numerous past occasions.

It's a cool record. I'd check it out at least.
