  1. Amanaz - Africa - (Now Again, US reissue) great remastering although the pressing could be better. Still, what a great album.
  2. I'll have to pick up the unedited Sound. I don't know why never knew that what is commercially available on CD differed significantly from the Delmark LP, which I picked up as I was just getting into jazz. Thought that Graves was against having his music reissued while he was still alive, though with the NYAQ box that stance might have changed. The SRP records are cool, though I've long felt like they were "studies" for something we never got to hear. For example, their playing on More Giuseppi Logan is like the music from Yale, but fleshed out with reeds and bass.
  3. I'm not a promotor by trade and put together an evening of music by artists whose work I enjoy and don't get to see/hear enough of.
  4. Only have this on LP so I've never even heard the unedited takes...
  5. First time curating a house concert series, naturally at somebody else's house...
  6. Check him out with Mingus, too.
  7. Yeah, I recall it looking better on paper than it sounded.
  8. Roscoe is one of a couple of artists whom I'd like to see again (have not seen him in a decade). The others would be Crispell & Hemingway and the Robinson-Whitecage Quartet.
  9. I agree 100% percent re: Jones' "Hill Country Suite." It's a gem. Plus, how can you go wrong with a George Mraz & Freddie Waits rhythm section? I'd not known about Jones until this post. Just listened to some of "Country Hill Suite" online. Interesting listen. Anyone care to comment on the Cobblestone release "The Arrival of Bobby Jones" I've heard it before and thought it was pretty solid, but it's been years since I've listened to it and don't have a copy. only RSD purchase was Amanaz. I already had the Shadoks boot from maybe ten years ago, but this contains an alternate mix and a detailed booklet. So I guess the Shadoks is up for grabs... sort of like the Zambian answer to the Stooges and the MC5.
  10. From what I understand, that's it. Could make for a nice 10" or shortish 12" LP.
  11. good to know for the next holiday spent in North Texas, where my girlfriend's parents reside.
  12. He does go into this somewhat here. Very early interview for me; thanks to a bit of Clem/MomsMobley's ball-busting, got some egregious errors/weirdness straightened out. But it's still pretty weird...
  13. On the fence - but should check early onset saltiness at the door and try to see some of the music.
  14. He was fighting a cold when I saw them last weekend - maybe he was under the weather. Although it didn't show in his playing. Agreed, he and Seabrook sound great together. Also, excellent article - thanks Mark.
  15. Thanks, Chuck - don't know if I could've avoided the secretary's offer, however!
  16. He passed last night. Just got the word from the label. He was 85 and in poor health. I have complex feelings about him as an individual and the ESP label was both brilliant and misguided at different times, but damn - that's quite a legacy. RIP.
  17. There's at least one track on that record that reminds me of the Minutemen or Pere Ubu.
  18. was Sarah Lipstate in that band at the time? She's from Lafayette.
  19. Lovely session. I have this on a nice French Pathé LP from the late '60s.
  20. Old Moers Almanac is excellent. Solo in Berlin 1975 (CD only) is also tremendous. There's not a single Rutherford performance that isn't fascinating - at least to my ears.
