  1. I have all those on Time/Mainstream LPs and the music is great. Definitely worth picking up.
  2. Funny... I guess Pink Floyd is mostly "known" for their work in the 70s, but I think their best music was at the tail end of the '60s and that work was decidedly avant-garde. 1967's Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a classic, and Saucerful of Secrets isn't too shabby either.
  3. In European improvised music, I really think of things as getting underway in the 1970s - though certainly Brotzmann, Wilen (who seemed to embrace "free jazz" around 1965-1966), Stevens, Schoof, von Schlippenbach, Tusques and others were on the scene before that. Cage, sure. Funny, my mind usually thinks of his work tied to the 1940s and 1950s. With Reich, certainly he began his explorations in the 1960s but the 70s was really his "decade." Same with Glass. Maybe Riley too, though I know he was quite advanced with his work in the early '60s along with LaMonte and Terry Jennings.

  5. Yeah the Tyler is great. I'm biased because from his ESPs onward I am a fan...
  6. Yeah, I noticed that too. For me it's hard to really do an audio review when writing up discs. To me it's often fairly irrelevant - the music is what matters (says the vinyl hound).
  7. Yeah, it is indeed great. Fielder is always a gas to hear and I was impressed by Freddie Berry. Was a fine comedown/celebration to the day as I lay in bed last night listening.
  8. Yeah, good point. I'll have to go up there sometime and see what I can come away with :-) If they're in fine condition that's all the better - rarely are killer records you find in shops here in anything approaching collectible shape.
  9. Sounds like the digging in Dallas is not bad. You would never, ever find records like that in Austin for anything approaching a fair price - much less "cheap."
  10. I think the Newport recordings are musically "better," but this is good and available (which other Mengelberg from the period is definitely not).
  11. I guess this is a little bluer tint, but whatever...
  12. Since the cover has "modern art," an image of Roman Signer's photo piece Wasser Stiefel. Album is Gastr del Sol's Upgrade & Afterlife.
  13. John Surman/John Warren - Tales of the Algonquin - (Deram, stereo)
  14. Luc Ferrari - Interrupteur/Tautologos 3 - (EMI Electrola Germany)
  15. There's a lot of love for the Dixon so I'm sure it will sell... meanwhile, a 1500-unit run of the Hemphill will surely move. I'm glad you've got this program going, indeed.
  16. Wow - would love to hear some of these.
  17. Thanks! I'll keep an eye on it... even though checking my eBay spending totals for the last 60 days brought me back to Earth. Whoops.
  18. Nice! Too bad this isn't in the "offering" forum...
  19. I guess they spent so much on graphic design that they couldn't afford a proofreader. Love that N'Orleans cover, Jeff! My favorite detail is "Battle Hymn-Republic." But they blew the opportunity for "Closer Walk w/Thee" and "My Hat, Cane." I'll try to fix those two missing images in a bit. Man, Jeff, that is an amazing cover! I would love to have that in my collection.
  20. Bad habit, sure, but a killer album and a hilariously great cover.
  21. Coltrane - Impassioned Tenor-Man (Alto) Pretty wonky-sounding bootleg; I assume the tape speed is off because the LP plays "normally."
  22. Just got back from NYC to find a Nessa parcel waiting. Pumped to crack into these later!
  23. Poignant release in light of Mr. Noordijk's passing.
  24. Got mine. I haven't A/B'ed it with my Mbari LP (which is in very nice condition and always sounded good), but the CD is very punchy sounding, moreso than I remember the session to be. I think it suits the music for sure - great as always. Glad this is now in a much more available format.
