  1. Cool, thanks for bringing this to light, Jeff!
  2. Despite the presence of intelligent criticism of his improvisational choices, I generally have no problem with Phil Woods and tend to like his albums. This includes hearing him with Nick Stabulas and Teddy Kotick as well as Daniel Humair and Henri Texier. I do need to get more of the Phil/Quill chases on disc, though. Most 'heads' I know look at me askance when I say I dig Phil Woods, as though my jazzbo license is gonna get revoked.

  3. Despite intelligent criticism of his playing, which I can see as being part of the equation, I generally have no problem with Phil Woods and tend to like his albums. This includes hearing him with Nick Stabulas and Teddy Kotick as well as Daniel Humair and Henri Texier. I do need to get more of the Phil/Quill chases on disc, though.

  4. Phil Woods - Musique du Bois - (Muse)
  5. Oh man - the great Portuguese pianist-composer Bernardo Sassetti has died at 41 in what sounds like a hiking accident. Way too young to go. His Clean Feed albums are tremendous.

  6. Yeah I remember the $5,600 one. Was that Fred Cohen or the Music Matters guys selling it? I can't remember.
  7. The excellent Portuguese pianist/composer Bernardo Sassetti died at 41 in what sounds like a hiking accident. His albums on Clean Feed are all worth seeking out. Info here (in Portuguese). RIP - way, way too young to go.
  8. America and Africa connected to an IV drip/umbilical cord, leading to a nebulously-shaped African-American fetus. Looking at the lineup this seems like my kind of disc, so I'll have to find a copy.
  9. What a great cover on that Ware album!
  10. You can stream a little bit of the rare Nicaragua No Pasaran bootleg LP over at Destination:Out if you're so inclined. Scarce LP - never owned a copy - but the performance sounds, from what I can tell, like a fine one. Also, for the streaming or the downloading, is an archival/unreleased FMP orchestra session that I haven't gotten to just yet, but it looks impressive.
  11. I was just trying to say he's not really a "jazz" pianist, or connected to it in the same way that Cecil is, but he's real good.
  12. I'd expect it to double that at least.
  13. Be careful drizzling tamari whilst downing a beer. Your motions might get carried away on that kale you just steamed. Blecch.

  14. Hah - forgot about that.
  15. Was spinning: Birigwa - Birigwa - (Seeds) Boston-based Ugandan folk singer backed by Stan Strickland, Art Brooks and Mait Edey. Now spinning: Kenny Wheeler - Song for Someone - (Incus, black label)
  16. Same here! He's good. With his music, I see the piano as an expressive tool divorced somewhat from Tradition, but with energy and soul to spare. He's also a very nice person. Plays with Mike Watt (Minutemen)!
  17. Oh right, he's on the Mosaic Select. Forgot about that discographical detail...
  18. Is this the Teddy Robinson who played drums with Byron Allen?
  19. Planning to play something from this on Sunday's "Cutting Edge" episode, featuring newer pianists' work.
  20. Nate Wooley/Christian Weber/Paul Lytton - Six Feet Under - (No Business)
  21. Man, I love me some 70s Elliott Gould, but "Busting" wasn't all that great. I did like the supermarket shootout but even that could have been better. Oh well. They can't all be "The Silent Partner."

  22. Tex Ritter reference?
  23. Nice find. Wouldn't mind hearing this one as well.
  24. Wonder what these insane-looking privately pressed Babs Gonzales LPs will go for (Fred's got a few on auction)? Also I've never, ever seen the J.C. Heard on Argo. Sick!
  25. Yeah, that was - strangely - one of the first 20 or so jazz LPs I bought, and got it pretty damn cheap (NM- as well).
