  1. I have the original LP, on which "Ida Lupino" sounds a bit "off" from some other versions of the song. Like most of my vinyls, it's buried in storage so I can't check it now. Just got a press copy of the new reissue and it sounds good to me - deeper and fuller, so it might be close to correct. But I'm not too sure either way.
  2. Barbara Donald & Unity - Olympia Live - (Cadence Jazz Records) feat. Carter Jefferson
  3. And it looks like they restored the original cover too! Sorry, I'm not one for Ornette's paintings...
  4. Mole put it out as a bootleg, along with the Surman album that became Way Back When. They were available some years ago at about $100 a pop.
  5. Yeah, I remember seeing posters for the Cream and Santana bills and doing double-takes. Zoinks!
  6. Got confirmation that a review copy will be on its way shortly, so I'll keep y'all posted on sound/presentation.
  7. Not on Netflix. Dang.
  8. I was intrigued by it nearly enough to pick up a nice vinyl copy for $30. By "nearly enough" meaning that I passed but will try to nab it again if I see it. (And yes, I know there are CDs if all else fails!)
  9. Thanks for all the recommendations, my problem with Kirk is why does he play all of those at the same time? I mean what's the point? I heard him do that on "We Free Kings" and I thought it was annoying as hell. It is really hard to ignore posts like this.
  10. I don't know, but that is one hell of an odd lineup. I remember thumbing through a Fillmore book and a number of similarly odd gigs seemed to be programmed there. Apparently they liked to mix-and-match genres in their billing.
  11. Yeah, I was offered one once that had a deep gouge in the vinyl (for $125 - fine if it were mint) - had to pass!
  12. Yeah, he mentioned to me that he'd worked with them in later years. I really look forward to the Very Urgent coming out on disc. I've been looking for a vinyl copy for the better part of a decade...
  13. RIP to Mr. Macero. I too really enjoy his playing with Mingus and his own units.
  14. I remember that when it was running low, Ogun/Cadillac were running out of covers - so some were sold cut-rate without artwork.
  15. Nah, I think it's cool that you're posting things I've never heard of or am reminded that I should get around to investigating. Face Records certainly has some nice stuff; may have to dig into their stock at some point.
  16. Thanks to all ! Porcy, my budget is 100-200 Euros, a little more if needed. = $5,000 US
  17. Corea/Holland/Altschul - ARC - (ECM German orig)
  18. Dang, both your on-deck choice and your new avatar are getting under my skin!
  19. We already have an AOTW thread going for this time period. Next time, you might want to check with member JohnS for future AOTW thread ideas. That way things don't get too random around here.
  20. Great post/thread idea. I like and appreciate all of the genres you mention, though am most familiar with no wave. I'm kind of with you on some counts regarding contemporary jazz and improvisation. Of course, I have a soft spot for lengthy Cecil and Coltrane solos, but the things I've been most attracted to in recent years are twittery collective improvisation and raging Euro-thrash din, or the Tristano-ites. There's a nice little project called Two Bands And A Legend that features The Thing (Gustafsson/Haker Flaten/Nilssen-Love), Joe McPhee and the Norwegian punk band Cato Salsa Experience. Mostly short songs, not so much "spastic" and more of a 60s-garage-revival hybridized with post-FMP freedom. It may be a parenthetical aside at this point in the music's history (and will probably always be), but it works in practice as well as idea. For a time, I was convinced that the music I really wanted to hear hadn't been made, though I always sought to find what it was. My search isn't as obsessively urgent as it used to be (based mostly on pocketbook constraints), in some ways it is still true. I haven't yet found the combination of jazz/open improvisation/folk/ragas/post-punk that I'm looking for, but have come close on a few occasions. If Daevid Allen and Arto Lindsay co-conducted the People Band, that would be up there...
  21. I haven't heard Naked City in years. I suspect it wouldn't sound as "avant-garde" to my ears now as it used to. Seemed to be going for a Ruins/Magma-on-crack thing if I recall correctly.
  22. Got a Goldring on my Music Hall. Like it. Had a Pearl and liked that too; not sure which model.
  23. I saw him once and thought him very good at what he does (the NPR-Americana thing). That said, it's not really my thing, though I can appreciate why a lot of people like it. When he was in Paul Motian's band, it was a different story - that's where my personal preference would lie.
