Yeah, the only one I've spent any time with (and that still isn't a lot) is Unity, on EPI, with Gerald Wise, Byard Lancaster, Eric Gravatt a.o. Pretty smokin' session, if memory isn't failing me.
He's a fine drummer with Pharoah and Shepp, but I could see how his approach might not have the specifics about what Jackie would have wanted.
Jackie was very much concerned with the history of the music being present as part of the path to moving forward. If that wasn't clearly happening from a chosen musician, well then, what's the point?
Do you know if tapes exist of the proposed Bley "Double LP" for ESP?
I know it was proposed in the late '60s, but obviously nothing came of it. Think it may have been assigned a catalog number.
Also, Bernard has noted that some tape issues with the Lacy were corrected, so it might be worth a purchase. Sounded good to me on the first pass of this edition, though I always thought my 5th Ave. vinyl sounded pretty nice.
I have the original LP, on which "Ida Lupino" sounds a bit "off" from some other versions of the song. Like most of my vinyls, it's buried in storage so I can't check it now.
Just got a press copy of the new reissue and it sounds good to me - deeper and fuller, so it might be close to correct. But I'm not too sure either way.
I was intrigued by it nearly enough to pick up a nice vinyl copy for $30. By "nearly enough" meaning that I passed but will try to nab it again if I see it.
(And yes, I know there are CDs if all else fails!)
Thanks for all the recommendations, my problem with Kirk is why does he play all of those at the same time? I mean what's the point? I heard him do that on "We Free Kings" and I thought it was annoying as hell.
It is really hard to ignore posts like this.
I don't know, but that is one hell of an odd lineup.
I remember thumbing through a Fillmore book and a number of similarly odd gigs seemed to be programmed there. Apparently they liked to mix-and-match genres in their billing.
Yeah, he mentioned to me that he'd worked with them in later years.
I really look forward to the Very Urgent coming out on disc. I've been looking for a vinyl copy for the better part of a decade...
Nah, I think it's cool that you're posting things I've never heard of or am reminded that I should get around to investigating.
Face Records certainly has some nice stuff; may have to dig into their stock at some point.
