  1. On a guess, I'm going to say the VSOP is a vinyl reissue of the Omegatape reel-to-reel. VSOP also reissued the J.R. Monterose LP In Action, which was originally on Studio 4 (a bitch to find that one, too).
  2. I thought there was another one on Delmar(k) that consisted of funeral music, which I don't have. Saw it once sealed for $40 and the jacket alone really got under my skin. Unfortunately, my wallet was even thinner than my skin.
  3. Not even his wounds?
  4. You know, I was listening to that the other day and was reminded that my uncle wrote a piece very, very similar to cut one, side two (albeit a few years later). He performed it in 1980 with George Alford, flugelhorn; Mario Pavone and Joe Fonda, bass; and Yohuru Ralph Williams, percussion. I have a recording from the master tape - fine, indeed.
  5. I recently picked up, on LP, the compilation Main Stream Jazz on Blue Note (King Japan, 1983) that collects the Ike Quebec Swingtet 78 masters as well as some material from Jimmy Hamilton. Excellent stuff. Thing is, my girlfriend is interested in a CD copy. I was researching AMG (is that really research? Doubt it...) and I couldn't find any in-print version of what I have on vinyl. Of course, the Mosaic is way OOP. Now, I see a few other compilations that have what appears to be some of this material, but it's hard to tell what's in print, and what would be the most comprehensive. Any help would be appreciated.
  6. What is this? The world needs to know! Seconded! I haven't heard Gary Peacock recently, so I can't say if he was lobotomized or not. Reports are he sounded great with Bley not too long ago (a pesky pianist whom Jarrett claims never to have heard).
  7. I saw him open for the Espers last February. Fantastic. He opened w/ 15 minute rendition of "Love Abides". He had the whole place mesmerized. Thanks for reminding me that I need to pick this up. Yeah, he did that in Austin, too. Fantastic! I think that 1st on Holy Mountain is better than the new one, though. There's also one on Thrill Jockey that, even for me, is just noise... kinda wish Lungfish hadn't quit, though. Now spinning: Ike Quebec, Jimmy Hamilton, Tiny Grimes, etc. - Mainstream Jazz - (Blue Note King compilation)
  8. Jarrett Review at AAJ Think I wrote less on the (excellent) new Bill Dixon, and that's not for want of adjectives or historical value...
  9. Daniel Higgs - Metempsychotic Melodies - (Holy Mountain)
  10. Asides aside, there are some good Jarrett recordings that I will throw on and enjoy every once in a while. They are "early" in his oeuvre, groaning but sans rants. At this point I don't really care about the brouhaha, or about his records since let's say around 1974. He'll keep putting them out, though, and a lot of people will keep buying.
  11. I have a lot of this stuff in "the other format" but look forward to the release of this set. About damn time.
  12. I thought about this a while before posting. The only thing I can say is that I can't imagine Ervin and Larry sounding right together. Larry's records are pretty "clean" IMO and that's why Joe Henderson, Sam Rivers and Herbert Morgan fit perfectly with his approach.
  13. I often get "Supersax" and "Shadowfax" confused in name only. Apologies to the participants of the first!
  14. Yeah, I have to come back up to Austin to clean my flat, so I'll definitely stay an extra several hours to catch this gig!
  15. Cream - Wheels of Fire - (Atco tri-color orig) Edit: this one's for you, porcy!
  16. I like his playing with Bruce Eisenbeil and the solo disc is a monster (if something I don't return to a ton), but have yet to hear his dates leading a band.
  17. The Donald Byrd/Gigi Gryce Jazz Lab & The Cecil Taylor Unit - At Newport - (Verve Japan mono)
  18. Yes, the seller has a good reputation and they always put nice shit up on eBay. They're friendly and knowledgeable, and the store itself actually offers pretty good deals.
  19. Yeah, Lacy's shit didn't start getting out of hand - at least on record - until the Candid LP. Still, Soprano Sax is scarce in a clean original form.
  20. J. R. Monterose - Live in Albany - (Uptown) w/ Hod O'Brien, Teddy Kotick and Eddie Robinson.
  21. He just blathers on and doesn't talk about anything. Sure as hell isn't selling it to me...
  22. Hard to get for less than $100, though I think mine was on sale for $84.99 so... How is your Toshiba laptop, chew-chew-chewy-bean-benitez? I had one for about three years that crapped out; I'm on my second goddamn Dell and it's about to go also.
  23. I have a 250 GB Maxtor, and use it solely for backup. If I'm not actually running things off of it, is it less likely to fail?
  24. She can stay the hell away from my fixed-gear...
