  1. That sounds familiar - I may have had that at one point. Who is on it?
  2. Great sounding stuff. Thanks.
  3. The CD reissue contains a cover image from a later vinyl edition.
  4. Unless I'm missing something, Peter Brotzmann would qualify. Freddie Redd Sunny Murray (not counting his aborted Columbia record or the Impulse sideman dates) Dizzy Reece
  5. Yeah, I seemed to have let those Steeplechase sides slip away into the ether of trades/sales. Oh well...
  6. There is a ton of Lacy to go through, but some of the solo works are a lot more "instantaneous" than deliberately process-oriented. I think the solo on Emanem is a good example of that - very wooly session, if you axe me. Obviously, Lacy had a very clear idea of things he was trying to work through, quite often, but there's a ring of what Paul Rutherford said to me in interview: Even playing tunes, there's so much freedom in what Lacy was doing. (And I dig Giuffre, but am not expert enough to offer much to the discourse here.)
  7. Prince Lasha - Recommended. I dig Prince Lasha. Sangrey is biased because he played with Prince Lasha. Not true, unfortunately. Never even met the man. The Gonsalez/Lasha stuff happened when I was living elsewhere. Really? I could swear you were credited alongside Lasha on one of the Daagnim sessions (and one that, sadly, I don't own). Must've combined it from multiple sessions and I missed that.
  8. Very interesting. Now that I have two versions of the song in my head, I suppose that you are right about that. I don't have the CD, just the ESP vinyl, so can't confirm.
  9. Must be... the original was a private, if I recall correctly. Unless I'm totally stoned and thinking of something else.
  10. Lots of very interesting observations in this thread. Thanks. Those Saravah Lacys are really fine, and Lapis is probably my favorite of the bunch (still looking for Roba!) ...
  11. Infinity is pretty expensive on the eBay market... I'd like to hear it, too. The Philly Jazz is wonderful, and I get a real kick out of the Dogtown as well.
  12. Damn, I would love to see this gig or go sailing with him. Thanks for the info.
  13. Oh, and I really hope they fixed the track order on the James. At least the original vinyl seems to have it mixed up...
  14. The Lacy is good, but the one from that era that REALLY smokes is Sortie, issued originally on the Italian GTA imprint (RCA-related, iirc). Has Kent Carter and Aldo Romano in place of Dyani and Moholo. Apparently the ESP was taped at a fluxus event/happening; I suspect Guillermo Gregorio has some recollections of that period in Argentine art and music, and could probably contribute some interesting anecdotes/thoughts if asked nicely. These were all done by Calibre before (as were the Byron Allen and the Grimes), so I can't imagine we're getting much new here. Great records though, all of them. The Silva is a favorite of mine, as is the Berger. The tapes are in Berger's care, so I don't think they'll be reissuing that one... as for Skillfulness, I recommended it to Bernard for reissue, but that was some time ago.
  15. Prince Lasha - Recommended. I dig Prince Lasha. Sangrey is biased because he played with Prince Lasha.
  16. Obviously you know who the "real" Steve Miller is...
  17. Yes, knowing the instrument is very important. I play - or did play for a long time - the cello. I always hated being asked if it was a bass, even though I also loved the bass. Funny, they never asked if my violin was a guitar...
  18. I've had two or three copies of that one, and all were noisy pressings. The Terroade and Thornton I seem to remember being fine; I got those sealed. I don't know if Charly/Get Back de-click in remastering, but just by using better quality vinyl than BYG did, they have to be an improvement. I know that, for example, originals of Seasons were a pressing nightmare (mine has distortion all over side 5 as well as in parts of side 1), but the reissue sounds good.
  19. I haven't got the chance to check that out yet. Thanks for the reminder.
  20. Dig: Interview on AAJ with Smith (for Nate)
  21. I really don't know how to write; I just do. Pardon the cliches you will inevitably find in my reviews.
  22. Quite like the cover art m'self.
  23. Yes, deserving of a Darwin award...
  24. BYGs are plummeting in price - not worth listing 'em as "rare" at this point.
  25. Overall it's Marion Brown, tough guy even for german producers Well, considering the recordings he was doing around that time for Calig, Freedom and Century, it's bound to be a little wild! Most of the early ECM catalog is pretty interesting and fairly "free," though I've got some good ones on LP well into the 1100s.
