That's one of my favorites by this group - adding Nate Morgan on piano and Ndugu Chancler on drums!

I'm gonna have to disagree with any claims to the effect that Brotz lacks compassion. I'm also gonna have to disagree with putting Brotz and Flaherty in the same barrel. Flaherty's popularity seems to be less among free-jazz heads and more among the "New Weird America" folk/skronk set, for some reason. That has a lot to do with the Yod catch-all business. Corsano's great. My friend Rachel used to date him back when they were teenagers.

And that, in itself, is impressive!

I haven't heard Kent do anything that WASN'T impressive...

Consider it an achievement that you shelled out for it. I have no doubt that quite a bit of what's included on those records is very good--but talk about steep. I find it ironic that the box is still the cheapest way to hear a lot of those albums. One of my favorite LA record shops was carrying an Ictus for $50 (unfortunately for me, it was the last one--the shop owner said a "couple of Japanese guys came in and bought up all the weird jazz--dropped about $300."). Dude, you only need like the first few LPs! That would set you back about the same - $100!

I have that buried somewhere...

To continue the derailment, I had that 10" posthumous release on T&G, and thought it was pretty good. No singing, and singing now bothers me way more than it did then - at least on those kinds of records. Stranger things have happened than a 10" on Jennifer Hartman, but I've never seen it - that's all I'm saying. My last copy of Tweez was a T&G repress, and I wasn't feeling it anymore... Then again, I always get reamed for liking Rodan, and I really do like Rodan a lot. Still.

Giorgio Gaslini - Nuovi Sentimenti - (EMI reissue of VDP orig) with Lacy, Cherry, Rava, Gato, Romano, Jenny-Clarke, Kent Carter, Franco Tonani and Gianni Bedori. Hard to fuck with that lineup... Now: Steve Lacy Sextet - Scraps - (Saravah orig, autographed!) "Ladies" is insane (and aren't they?!)... -
Only saw Spider John once when I was up there, as part of some anti-whatever (meta-hipster) festival. Good shit indeed, though it was kind of a blur. If I were still in MSP, I'd be there!

Is that right? I was under the impression that Mazurek was the one who was commissioned for this piece. McEntire does play on this album, but Vandermark doesn't, does he? No, Vandermark doesn't play on it. I was referring to an earlier post. J, I was quoting you to concur... And btw, the earliest version of Tweez that I had was the 12" on Jennifer Hartman. Didn't realize there was anything before that.

Eric Dolphy - Iron Man - (Douglas original) Been awhile since I spun this'n! -
That Exploding Star Orchestra is the cross-pollination of McEntire and Vandermark sensibilities, from what I understand. Be afraid - be very afraid!

Paris Jazz

What do you have already, and which is the best? This one is well documented. But it is only available in French! The cover (by Chenz) shows Jackie McLean at the Chat Qui Peche in 1961 with Jean-François Jenny Clark on bass and Aldo Romano on drums. Big Beat Steve already mentioned this one. It is a good read! I wish it was in English, or more correctly, that I read French! Not only is Jackie hot, but that's a sweet rhythm section. They must have been so young then! Le Chat Qui Peche is where so much happened - it would've been a great time to be in Paris! -

He was contracted to play it by some clubs. There's a story that Burton Greene tells in his autobiography about Trane playing a gig where Frank Wright was in the audience. The group stopped their set, and the clubowner got pissed and refused to pay because Trane was contracted to play the tune. So he brings the band back on stage, they play the theme, and Trane says "Frank Wright, sit in!" Frank blows furiously for several minutes, then Trane plays the theme, and they collect their dough. Burton could tell the story better, but it's funny/strange either way... -
Bastro are fine, but if you ever have heard Rhys Chatham's tune "Drastic Classicism," ya got all ya need right there - and without any hammer-hurling... Apparently there was an all-girl punk band in the '90s from Louisville called Rastro, which I find quite funny. Fuck Tortoise, the Sea and Cake, hell, fuck Slint too (overrated). CA bitch magnet

Mal Waldron - The Whirling Dervish - (America) Mal Waldron - Blood and Guts - (Futura) Warne Marsh - s/t - (Atlantic black label orig) A good morning soundtrack to writing a research paper... -
Actually, come to think of it, DMG has some of the craziest prices I've ever seen in a store on used records.
-
I've never had any problems per se with Manny, Bruce, or DMG. For CD's, they've got a pretty strong stock. Bruce did rag on Teddy Charles' Evolution once, though...

No problem, Brownie. It is a gatefold sleeve and I believe it is the same as the original apart from the spine that is white and not orange and black. Also, the back of the sleeve is blue. (I don't know what colour the original one is). BTW, it is the live at the Village Vanguard live AGAIN! Sorry about the confusion! Yeah, the back of the original is glossy blue... the white spine is a drag, but it could be worse! I've seen those Capitol Record Club issues also - never bought them myself because of the reasons you're not keeping it, but if you're not anal-retentive, it's not a bad deal... FWIW, I'm not convinced that the recording quality itself is all that great. My red/black Van Gelder always sounded pretty thin to me.
