  1. Reece, when I interviewed him, talked a lot about percussion and its relationship to both the trumpet in particular, and of course to the music in general. Lest one forget he was also a conguero. I need to listen to Tolliver a bit more closely, because I've not thought of him in this respect as an instrumentalist, though his tunes are often very rhythmic, and quite often eliptically so. Raphe Malik - YES. I was thinking recently how the brass music of composer Rhys Chatham sounds like isolated (minimalist) variants on the martial themes of Ayler and Don Cherry. Might be worth a listen for some out there.
  2. The Rileys on CBS don't have electronics. You have to move to the Turtle and Incus for that (and then some...). Shouldn't this be in the recommendations thread?
  3. Well, count me among the habitually, inexcusably, always late!
  4. I think this'll be a keeper, tho I have yet to hear it...
  5. Looks great. You've heard the early Howard Riley trios on CBS, no?
  6. I'd add that if anyone has any idea what was played, whether or not it was recorded, that would also be of interest.
  7. Thanks for the help. Not surprising re: Ra and Carter. Strange that nothing from Ayler or Shepp survives in the vaults, but shit happens. I've been dealing with enough tape issues in audio preservation classes that I guess it shouldn't be a total surprise.
  8. Jesus YES! Also Heavy Soul... there's a reason Hans Dulfer named his label after Ike's date!
  9. Just hearing of this now. Jesus.
  10. I was just thinking about whether any more of the artists' sets (assuming there was more) were recorded at the Village Gate for what became the New Wave in Jazz LP on Impulse!. I know there's a 24-minute Moncur track and a take of "Plight" on an Impulse! comp titled The New Breed (which I also have), but am wondering whether there are other tracks by Coltrane, Shepp and Ayler. Also, as I understand it, Ra and Betty Carter each played sets. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
  11. The Prestige is really cool-looking. Always liked that one.
  12. Probably won't happen, but I hope I'm wrong! Of course, a person could use that link above to have it on CD®. No, wait! It's a download! Along with School Days from 1963, Sortie might be Lacy's best from the 60's. It's indeed a shame it's not better known. If I could write a check for, say, $15.99 to Irène Aëbi to have this as an actual CD, I'd do it in a heartbeat. She's sitting on so much un-reissued stuff that it's probably overwhelming. And FWIW, I would rather see the UMS Lacy archive delve into weird '60s groups than live extras from the Saravah period, as good as that shit is. I used to have doubles of Sortie, but traded one for Groupcomposing and a couple of Surman records... thought it was a deal at the time!
  13. Noah Howard - Black Ark - (Freedom Polydor orig)
  14. I had the India Navigation LP at one point (the Munoz, not the Pharoah), and didn't feel the vibrations. But hey, I got a thick skull.
  15. Sortie is dope. It was issued on GTA and reissued on International Polydor (with a different cover). Both are not "cheap" by any means, which I would say demands a proper CD reissue!
  16. Ah. Thought that was what you meant. I've heard some stories too.
  17. Re: the Mobley 1568, 500 copies isn't that rare in eBay terms anyway.
  18. Nor was the reserve met on Dusk Fire, at over $650!
  19. "bombed out" meaning?
  20. Walt Dickerson - Impressions of a Patch of Blue - (MGM orig) Familiar platter on this board, I am sure! Great band - Bob Cunningham, Roger Blank and, oh yeah, whatsisname on piano/harpsichord.
  21. I think they're a great combo, esp. if you mean by "aggressiveness" an aggressive flow of ideas, which Howard definitely brought out in the Reverend. On deck: Frank Wright - Your Prayer - (ESP orig; this one's for Songer!) Ted Daniel - Sextet - (Ujamaa orig)
