  1. Let 'Em Roll is one of my favorites... I'll spin it tonight. "Latona" is such a great tune!
  2. Jazz Composers' Orchestra "Communication" (Dutch Fontana) man, whoever Bob Carducci was, he was a hell of a tenor player...
  3. Fresh Sound is pretty cool, and Water could be cooler eventually. Revenant!
  4. Yeah, I really like what I've heard of hers, not coincidentally on the same label. I think she has several on Word.
  5. For some reason I thought the Clark tune was a longer title but yeah, when I got home, just one word... We have tendency to nit-pick on this board, and I certainly haven't made enough time or space for Blakey and Silver. Don't know why - the Messengers are obviously a revered band for a reason, but it just never hit me. Just as Unit Structures might not hit a lot of people the way it does me, I might add... I agree, ideally improvisation is like viewing a Monet in natural lighting.
  6. You know, I didn't keep either of the solo LPs I had - this one and one on IAI - but his trio records are all amazing. I found the ECM recording quality a hindrance to his unadorned, subtle style. Luckily, they didn't master out the color on "Ballads" or "Bley with Gary Peacock," two great ECM trio sessions.
  7. Ah, thanks. Couldn't remember the reed player... I guess 2.5 years living in Chicago was partially wasted never following up on Nicky, or early Abrams for that matter.
  8. Anybody heard his early work with Frank Strozier and the MJT? I'm a little curious.
  9. Basra, Trompeta Toccatta, and Black Fire, followed by Inner Urge for me.
  10. The request was definitely for 'recent' recordings... I'll try and nab the +3 disc if I can find it. Yeah, I've passed on all the old Milestones. Maybe I shouldn'tve, but one can only find so much room for weird free records one isn't going to listen to more than once. Y'know?
  11. Pierre Favre/Irene Schweizer/Peter Kowald "Santana" (FMP) pretty heavy collective improvisation from a non-Cecil piano trio. "Feel Trio," indeed... wish I had the handmade private edition, though!
  12. Hey, not too many valve trombonists out there... Brookmeyer and my 'namesake' are the ones that come most quickly to mind. So at least for that you gotta give him credit. And yeah, those Verve samba/third-stream sides he did were weak, but I'm all for the Jimmy Giuffre 3.
  13. Thanks! I don't have any of his stuff from after about 1965 or so, so I was unsure what to even look for.
  14. Hi all, A question: I was asked a favor by someone, to pick them up a copy of one of Sonny's newest CDs. Any idea what that or those might be, and any recommendations of New Newk within the past few years? Much appreciated... CT
  15. I've never seen 'mrjazzman' before... All three he mentioned are fine by me - don't get any vitriol, nor unflinching praise from this end. Probably goes for most everyone else here. The Mulligan-Desmond quartet on Verve is a good pianoless quartet record, though.
  16. Now that's what I call an LP... tho black/red ABC is probably a stereo (A-9161 Stereo).
  17. Wow, I can't believe I read through all the posts!
  18. About a month or so ago... who knows.
  19. That is a heavy one.
  20. Huh. I'm going from the horse's mouth, but memory can get foggy I suppose. He was quite adamant about it being after Fire Music and before Ascension...
  21. An interesting sidenote: Marion has said that this was recorded before Ascension, making it a Summer (rather than mid-November) 1965 date. Curious... Mike?
  22. Mingus probably knew it all. Haven't listened to that one in a while...
  23. Not a big Dylan fan at all, but this is amazing music. I really don't want to buy it from Starbucks, though. Does the coffee giant have deeper pockets than Sony, or what?
