I think the bats are still flying around my back garden (unless hibernation has started early this year) so the vibes are right !
-
Sorry to hear of that experience. At least you came through unscathed ! Of course I meant to say 'Dotheboys Hall' (Nicholas Nickelby, Smike and all that - I think that's what it's called) which seems to have been the 'role model' for many of these so called 'institutions'. West Drayton eh? I used to work there about 20 years ago, know it very well. There was an RAF presence at the ATC Centre - would that be the reason your day was posted there? I have happier memories of the place. Some good pubs along the high street, one of which I recall featured in the movie 'Genevieve' !

Jamie Cullum by a long way. He should take the 'Brit' spot on this list which seems to be given to poor Humph - who has done more for Jazz in the UK via his radio show and live appearances than just about anyone. Big for 'Humph'..

Whoah ! - what place was that? Dildeboys Hall ?

Aaaaaaggggh - don't do this to me... Any new orders taken or recommendations for this set are strictly 'verboten' -
Obscure records you love which never get a mention

The Denny Zeitlin 1960s Columbias come to mind. 'Zeitgeist', 'Cathexis' and 'My Shining Hour - Live at the Trident'. All deserving of wider mention. -
Amazing that he didn't already have a copy or 3 !
-
'Grant Green Live at the Lighthouse' on the original BN double. To be followed up by Steve Kuhn ECMs 'Trance' and 'Last Year's Waltz' (with Sheila Jordan, Bob Moses and Harvie Swartz)

Hans, that looks to be a pretty neat item that you have there. Haven't a clue, to be honest. A Columbia Europe (Holland) promotional/publicity item, perhaps, for some 'exec' to hang on their wall? (I wasn't even aware that this one had been issued in Europe, all of the pressings I have seen have been US with the red Columbia label typical of the early 1970s). That metal 'master' must sound pretty far out. I gave my vinyl a spin a bit earlier and its total ring modulator madness, especially on 'Hey Jude'. I wonder if the Beatles ever heard that one? If the metal of the 'master' didn't destroy your needle the distortion on the ring modulator sure will.. Great find !

Thanks very much for the kind assistance with this Tooter. Please add me to the list, Dmitry. Look forward to participating..

Don Ellis 'Live at the Fillmore' on Columbia. Side 3 - ring modulator madness !
-
Don't have the European issue but the US G30243. The side 3 lineup on this is: 1. 'Hey Jude' 2. 'Antea' (Hank Levy) 3. 'Old Man's Tear' (John Klemmer). Track timings on the label exactly as per your details. A pretty wild 2LP set !

This LP sounds to me very much a homage to his Austrian homeland. In parts you can almost sense the herds of cows being herded down the mountain tracks, with the bells ringing (both cows and church that is). Very atmospheric !

Leeway - there was a documentary on BBC4 TV over here last week telling of Loussier's story and rise to fame in the 1960s, after discovery by UK Decca's Paris offshoot. He's not really my 'cup of tea' but there's no doubting the great musicianship and technique. His current trio sounds superbly rehearsed and beautifully co-ordinated. Great programme. BBC4 are on a roll at the moment. Last night it was Jane Monheit at the Brecon Festival. Just giving Dexter Gordon 'Go' a spin. Blue Note BLP 4112. Majesterial !

'Star Bright' is very highly recommended but on CD format the Mosaic Select is definitely the way to go. Check out also Dizzy's fine work on Andrew Hill's 'Passing Ships' and also the great 1960s date with Dexter Gordon 'A Day In Copenhagen' (issued by MPS/SABA).

This is indeed very sad news and one more link with the old Blue Note is lost. Gil was always one of my favourites and just yesterday I was spinning 'Mindscapes' in the car, enjoying it thoroughly and marvelling at Gil's imagination and versatility. A great loss - RIP. 'Tome VI' will be on the turntable this weekend..

Thanks for the comments, guys. Appreciated ! -
Just looking at the notes in my Verve Elite booklet Leeway and it says 'Schifrin recalls going to an elegant cafe in Ipanema many years ago and finding all of the walls paperd with Schifrin/Sade album jackets....' Probably find they are papered over with the Spice Girls now.. Great little 'cult' item nevertheless. I like the 60s feel (sort of 'sub-Loussier') and the fantastic lineup of session musicians in the band - Jimmy Maxwell, Ernie Royal and Snooky Young just for the trumpets. Pretty well the cream of the crop at the time. As for latest listening - just got Donald Byrd 'Mustang' NY USA mono on deck, 'Dixie Lee'

wesbed - a question I hate to ask but for someone who is currently 24/7 doing a tightrope on the fence is it worth pressing the button on this one? I like the Krupa material which has arrangements by Mulligan but have never heard the James. Or should I just save my money and put it aside for the Jazztet Concert Band? .. B-) -
I picked up the 'Strange Strings' and 'Atlantis' LPs on reissued Saturn for about £10-£12 and was reasonably happy with the sound. 'Strange Strings' is one very weird album..

Have had the Pablo vinyl of this since it came out. Have always enjoyed it - great groove and very well recorded. Has not been played in recent years though so I'll make amands and give it a spin. Incidentally, wasn't there another Dizzy 'Pablo Live' double from this vintage? Can't recall the title but I remember seeing one in red vinyl !

'Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions' in the LP format is one that doesn't come up too often.
-
Eric Kloss 'Consciousness!' on original Prestige Bergenfield. Quintet with Chick Corea, Pat Martino and Jack DeJohnette. Great condition and not a bad find at £12.
-
Just got Lee Morgan 'Sonic Boom' on deck but this one is the King GXK pressing and it sounds significantly better than the US 'LT' release.
