Sweet Love, Bitter !! One of the recent releases on Rhapsody Films, produced and directed by Herbert Danska in 1967 and starring Dick Gregory. Notable for a very fine soundtrack by Mal Waldron and with a story line loosely based on the last years of Charlie Parker. Charles McPherson 'ghosts' for Gregory in the soundtrack - the band is absolutely top notch with Dave Burns, George Coleman, Mal Waldron, George Duvivier/Richard Davis and Al Drears (?). The film superbly depicts the NYC of the period, the scuffle of the jazz life and the pit-falls in a sort of 'film noir' style. Very cool indeed ! B-) My understanding is that after initial release in the 60s the film was subsequently shelved and has been an 'underground' item ever since. I have the sneeking suspicion that I might have sen it at a rare jazz films festival put together by the National Film Theatre in the late 70s but I'm not sure. It looks sort-of familiar !

Just got hold of NY USA monos of Sam Rivers 'Contours', Lou Donaldson 'The Natural Soul' and a Liberty of Grant Green 'Visions'. A nice ol' haul for the day..

Just listening to 'Far Away Lands' and 'A Caddy For Daddy' earlier today. Why is it that these excellent sessions are routinely under-rated? (by the Penguin Guide as mentioned earlier but 'Far Away' in particular never seems to get any plaudits from the critics). Hank's playing on these sessions is well up to his usual standard in terms of fluency and invention, to my mind far superior to the playing on 'Reach Out' and 'The Flip'. Billy Higgins is also on fantastic form on both sessions - this was a really great period for him. OK, whilst neither of these sessions are quite up there with 'Soul Station' and 'Roll Call' etc. I suspect that 'Far Away Lands' in particular might be due for major re-appraisal. Any thoughts?

Has the babe thread inspired a purchase?

Tried back in the 1600s. It didn't work, we ended up with a load of Germans -
Heck, I remember programming some garbage in Fortran 77 on a mainframe that looked something like that ! Even had a hopper to pop all those punched cards in. Not sure about the ship's helm.... The teletype looks pretty familiar though ! (DEC/IBM?)

did england really have twice a day mail service
sidewinder replied to a topic in Miscellaneous Music
Wow - didn't know that ! These days they have problems making one delivery in London, that's assuming the contract labour guys they tend to employ in inner London can find the right address. That TV documentary with the undercover filming of mail being dumped by the wayside so these bozos could complete deliveries in the alloted time was pretty shocking.. -
Those Emarcy twofers were pretty exciting at the time.. B-) . I've got the Clifford Brown/Max Roach and (pre 10CD set days) that one was the biz. There was also a Cannonball Adderley 'Spontaneous Combustion' which was pretty good but - again - superceded by that great 2CD Verve compilation of Emarcy material. Here in the UK these were US imports and usually found as cutouts. The Trip reissues are also seen quite a lot here as cutouts (the Mole Jazz shop seems to have a 'black hole/red dwarf' effect on these ) but I hate the lousy vinyl quality so tend to avoid them.

Has the Mosaic site been down since the weekend...

Ditto. Maybe there's a frantic run under way on the 'Four Freshmen' set.. -
Another big thumbs up for Johnny Richards ! Over the last few days I have been giving repeated airplay to 'The Rights of Diablo' and 'My Fair Lady' off of a 1970s Vogue Jazz Double LP set. Absolutely fantastic stuff, especially 'Diablo'. Once you get over the period 'exotica' features and the vocal chorus (very much of its time) there is some fantastic arranging for the brass to savour. Richards is also a master at using latin american rhythmn. As an added bonus, 'Diablo' is also recorded at Webster Hall, so the acoustics are just dandy.. Looking forward to this particular Mosaic Select ! Incidentally, wasn't there another key Richards work recorded on an obscure Roost subsidiary (sort of a Greek Classics concept album?) recorded by a mid-sized group but which doesn't seem to be in the Mosaic Select lineup? Can't recall the title at this time.

did england really have twice a day mail service
sidewinder replied to a topic in Miscellaneous Music
Sure is ! (or rather ... was). The old system had first and second delivery. First around 7-8am. Second around lunchtime. First class mail usually got to anywhere in the country within 24 hours. Sadly the system is now not it was - my mail tends to be once aday around 12am (and if there's a Mosaic in there, often later.. ). -

				Complete Dolphy Prestige Box Set

Great version of 'Stolen Moments' by the way on that Lockjaw session. This box is excellent and is my main resource for the Dolphy Prestige material (I don't have much of his on vinyl apart from a BN 'Out to Lunch' and a 3LP America issue '5 Spot' set). Hardly a weak moment throughout the whole box, much of it superlative and with a nice informative booklet too. I recommend this one ! You also get the Mal Waldron session 'The Quest', the Ron Carter dates and those Latin Jazz Qunintet sessions as added bonuses. -
Johnny Richards - 'The Arranger's Touch'. Vogue 2LP set with 'Rites of Diablo'

Just been reading an article in the Sunday papers about botched silicone implants and this one came to mind...

Oh wait - 'Cuban Fire' was the McFarland suite on the other side of 'Latin Kaleidoscope' wasn't it? I can breath easy..

Some of the most fascinating material on the set are things like the Levister which only a total madman (or Mingus ) would have had the inspiration to record. A treasure ! Anyway, reminder for me to get back to the main feature of this thread ie. Mingus vinyl

John Lewis - 'The Golden Striker - Music for Brass and Piano By John Lewis Conducted and Played By The Composer' (Atlantic). Mighty fine Also just had a listen to 'The Giants of Jazz' 2LP set on Atlantic. Recorded in London in the early 70s by Dizzy, Stitt, Monk, Kai Winding, Al McKibbon and Blakey. Schhhhmokin' B-)

All great sessions. I really should have picked up the 'Three Latin Adventures' CD when it was available as I don't have 'Cuban Fire'. Doh !
