Yes, that’s right - I don’t recall ever seeing those single LPs from the series until much later as second hand items. Don’t recall ever seeing them even in the likes of Mole. That is also true that the earlier ‘Brown Bag’ issues could usually be found as corner cutouts for £2.99 at the likes of Our Price. There were tons of US cutouts available in the UK in that era and I have heard a story that deleted US LPs in bulk were used as ballast in some of the ships from NYC. Not sure just how credible that story is but I would like to believe it.

I think it was ‘The Blue Note Reissue Series’. Then there was that later singles set ‘The Blue Note File’ which was also called the ‘LT Series’ I think. The first bundle of the ‘Brown Bags’ had fairly good distribution over here and could often be found in cutout bins at the bigger stores. The second (darker) batch were more elusive and usually only seen at specialist stores, if at all.

All of those Dutton/Vocalion Garricks are great - not to be missed whilst they are still in print (although I suspect some of them are already OOP). My LP copy of ‘Marigolds’ is signed by Michael Garrick at Dartington Hall, Devon, sometime in the early 1970s.

Other than a mention in July’s ‘Jazzwise’ there has not been much mention of it. I’ve ordered and will post opinion once it has landed Chez Moi.

Yes, they messed up the sound and the cover art is sub-standard, not at all clear. The Japanese issue was better. Musically, it is one of his finest if not the finest of his recordings. Sold no more than about 1000 LPs at time of release, I’ve heard. Having said that - I’ve seen more than a handful in shops here, over the years. Clunky had some comments on the sound in the 2005 thread.

The ‘Palladium Jazz Date’ LP has one side of Cleo Laine and the other side with Tubby and co. so half of that LP is included. Much of ‘Equation in Rhythm’ was Jack Constanzo in various permutations and not much (but what there is is very good) Tubby. The ‘Sally’ track plus B side were from a Fontana EP not on any of the albums - never heard that one. CD12 ‘The Orchestra’ has never been previously put out on CD in the UK and I’m not even sure it has ever been issued in Japan. I have a Fontana LP of it - more commercial/MOR but very enjoyable and a great band of course.

Good to hear - gives confidence in the quality of the forthcoming Gearbox box set.

About 1974 - Yes, the album kicks off with ‘Olinga’ by Dizzy. Cedar Walton is on piano - alas. Fender Rhodes.

The Herbie Hancock was one of those multi-coloured ones which were compilation samplers. There were similar ones for Thad/Mel, Dexter and Stanley Turrentine ( I think). Never bothered with those as I had all the material on other issues.

Harkit LP version of this one. BBC transcriptions.

I’ve pre-ordered - delivery here in the UK is via courier. Nice to get the 10% ! I’ve waited 40 years for a set like this to appear so there is no way I want to have a Rendell/Carr disappearing act happen on me. Added bonus will be no doubt an authoratative booklet by Simon Spillett. I have confidence that the masters/transfers will trounce the PD versions previously available. Plus the appeal of Simon’s booklet of course.

This story has even made it to the BBC Radio 4 1pm news - the interviewee even mentioned ‘genres’.

The Jasmine CDs were of the Tempo material, which was earlier than Fontana. Previous UK CD issues of the material were on Redial and Impressed/Repressed, both Universal imprints. I am assuming that the LPs will be straight facsimiles of the original issues without any alternates, except ‘Grits’, which is without alternates. Looks like the 1961 ‘Tubbs’ session is in stereo. The surprise is the later ‘Tubbs in NY’, which they are saying will be in mono. That one definitely appeared as a Fontana stereo, as I have a copy. I guess the stereo master of that one must be MIA.

Yep, the ‘Brown Bag’ series covered the United Artists labels, including BN, Pacific Jazz, UA and Aladdin etc. material. Some fine Pacific Jazz in that series, in particular Jazz Crusaders ‘The Young Rabbits’, Gil Evans ‘Pacific Standard Time’ and Wes Montgomery ‘Beginnings’. One of our local (non-jazz) stores in a sleepy town had them in the window display back in the day and my eyes almost popped out of the sockets.

That’s the ‘Tune Up’ twofer put out by RCA in the 24000 series. Great music but absolutely appalling cover ! It was a similar situation over here concerning Blue Note. The dam burst somewhat around 1976/77 with the ‘brown bag’ twofers from Lourie/Cuscuna in the US followed by UK UA putting out about 20 or so classics in a batch which included the Bud Powells and the Ornette Golden Circles. That batch also included some obscurities such as McCoy Tyner ‘Tender Moments’ and Don Cherry ‘Where Is Brooklyn’.
