  1. Topo Gigio - that rings a dim and distant bell (and not a good one).
  2. CDs 3 and 4, the Quincy Jones sessions.
  3. Reserve power amp connected up - sounding more than ace
  4. Falling off the fence and now pondering a purchase of this one along with the Mobley and possibly the Herman.
  5. Recommended - Kirk played a local club here some years ago. Great player and an infectious, positive character. Had a nice chat with him about the Chet Baker Prestige sessions and he even signed a couple of the Chet Prestige CDs for me in addition to his own latest CD. Back then he lived in France (presumably still does?) and regularly toured the UK. Every week should be Kirk Lightsey week. I will definitely be catching these gigs on the on-line feeds.
  6. Thanks for that. Now somewhat on the fence !
  7. I have a copy of that one somewhere. At the time it was about the only vinyl I could afford !
  8. Anyone out there have the Bing and able to comment on it?
  9. Suitably impressed by pianist John Donaldson and co. last night so bought the CD. Good stuff !
  10. Plus I got it wrong about the Stateside LPs - they have white cover with art pattern. No Avery photos - which are on the Prestige LPs.
  11. Don’t have the Esquire of that one but I do have the later Stateside Vols 1 and 2 with the Ray Avery photos on the cover.
  12. ‘Gratitude’ is excellent - fine live gig, superbly recorded. Just as good as the Phil Woods double. Gilad performed a couple of sets last night with his Orient House Ensemble. Pretty well a completely Coltrane setlist. Probably the finest performance I have seen from him and I have seen some good ones over the years. Gareth Williams brilliant too. With a flat calm sea and superb evening sea view in the bay, what more could one ask for !
  13. Bought from (and signed by) the man himself ! His latest.
  14. And definitely ‘of its time’ aka 1974. Needs to be played with the imminent threat of a power cut !
  15. Interestingly, not an original but picked up recently as a new reissue. Other than the shrink-wrap you would be hard pressed to distinguish from a Mainstream orig. Probably on better vinyl as well. I’m assuming that this was put out by BGP/Ace but doesn’t say. Another new one.
  16. Short but very sweet BBC broadcast by Beckett’s S&R Powerhouse Section from 1974 in superb sound. Recommended !
  17. One of today’s finds - a Dutch Riverside mono original. The sonics absolutely first rate.
  18. Brings back good memories of being sat directly under JJs ‘bone at another NYC club whilst he was playing much of this material.
