It was mentioned a while back in the UK jazz press that the CD and LP boxes would eventually be offered by Universal via an internet site - after the CD issue of ‘Grits’ had come out. I suspect that this arrangement will be a ‘pop up’ and the LPs in particular, which are a limited issue, may not be around for long. How can that happen with a release date of late Sept for the box sets?

Bill, you should get yourself down to Swanage along with the rest of us ‘fossils’ to check out some fabulous UK jazz of all the classic genres. Based on this year’s performances, it is in fine shape. Gilad, Hexagonal, Mr Barnes, Newton/Themen, ‘Sound of Blue Note’ - that’s where its at.

In the mid 1970s they were pretty big in UK jazz circles, well as big as it ever got in such circles. I’ve still got that Capitol ‘Salt Peanuts’ album they did. Remember seeing Med Flory in person - he was a pretty tall guy, very enthusiastic musician.

The one time I can recall seeing Moe was through the window at George’s Spaghetti House when I walked past one evening. Sadly, never made it through the door.

£60 for the 12 CD set is very tempting, as is the 11LP set. Choices - made difficult by the fact that I’ve got pretty well all the Fontana material apart from ‘Grits’ on LP. I’ll bet these releases sound fabulous. Dilemma...

It should be - it was a planned Fontana studio recording release, until ‘The Orchestra’ was put out to mark a change of direction and - I guess - hopes for a more popular market (MOR, the ‘Studio 2’ set etc.). I haven’t heard this one yet - saving myself for the 11LP set, whenever that one surfaces..

Scottish? - I never thought of that. With a name like McLean it is quite possible. Bearing in mind also that Mingus had some Scots ancestry I think. I did, most fortunately, get to chat with Jackie and tell him how much I liked his concert and that I was a big fan of his music. He was most kind and signed a concert flyer.

It’s when your abode has room names like ‘The Mosaic Room’ and the ‘BN 1500 and 4000 series Room (with Liberty extension)’ that you start to realise that you might have a slight problem..

Wow - I wanted to vote, couldn’t and then realised that this was a thread from 2004. As time rolls on, ‘Spanish Key’ and ‘Pharoah’s Dance’ become more significant to me. Yes, ‘Sanctuary’ is to my mind looks back to the ‘Water Babies’ era and perhaps the band saying a fond farewell.

I’ve stood right next to Jackie Mac - he was quite short, I would say 5’5” or 5’6”. Quite stocky. Always thought he had a bit of Italian in him - or maybe French?

Talking of ‘storage wars’, there was a UK show some years back on TV and one episode featured the chap who used to run the ‘Rays Jazz’ store in Foyles bookshop. There were CDs and LPs stored all over the place, together with tour memorabilia, I recall. Mole Jazz owner Ed Dipple apparently had a collection which sold well in excess of £1M after he had passed on and much of it was kept in a garage lockup.

On the East - for sure. I found Toronto Summers a bit of a struggle. The municipal outdoor pools (free at the time - not sure if still the case) helped.

The Acker and Tracey pairing was surprisingly effective - ‘Blue Acker’ is not a bad album at all (have it on LP and Vocalion have reissued it on CD).

Watney’s Red Barrel - Party Pack 6, came in a tin. Beloved of a certain Monty Python sketch.. The euphemism, I guess, would be something to do with rats’ liquid waste. Then in the early 1980s it was Hofmeister, an appalling Germanic brew which the Germans would disown immediately plus that Aussie rubbish Castlemain-XXXX. Thankfully the cask real ale brews in pubs survived.. Not sure how we got here after Monk and Lacy..

He doesn’t have any Mosaics though..

Given how bad Molson/Labatt are/were, that is pretty scathing. Industrialised rubbish - although I did consume a reasonable quantity of it back in the day. Most of it is like ‘witch pee’. I thought I read that Miles was a fan of Heineken.

Lovely album - I’ve got it on a SABA vinyl, which I will dig out today. Always liked the way Boland uses trombones in the backing. That’s interesting concerning the cover photo - been a fan of that one too.
