Mr Tanno..... a Legend. Most of my Kings and Toshibas were supplied by him and as you say - invariably flawless. A condition downgrade from Tanno San usually meant no OBI at worst.
Very good point - Failing having an original, a King pressing would usually be my immediate first port of call. Many of the Toshibas are pretty nifty as well. Don’t recall any reports of wow and flutter with these either !
Don’t have the original ‘Cornbread’ at hand but was able to spin the track on the blue label ‘Lee Morgan Memorial Album’ and Herbie’s intro sounds OK. To my mind though, that intro always did have a bit of a mushy sonic to it.
Lots of traffic on the Hoffman Forum reporting that side 2 of ‘Cornbread’ has the ‘Black Fire’ issue.
I’m tempted with that Burrell. Have the session on a Doubletime CD so will have to remind myself.
I’ll have to dig my NY USA (Liberty era) mono ‘Cornbread’ out. Recall it sounding fine - the main gripe I have with that issue is that all copies I have ever seen seem to have sleeves cut at an angle from perpendicular. They must have all been done by a trainee on Friday afternoon..
Some very good things in that list. I would definitely add -
Alice Coltrane ‘Translinear Light’
Dave Holland Big Band ‘Overtime’
Yazz Ahmed ‘La Saboteuse’
Keith Tippett Octet ‘The Nine Dances of Patrick O’Gonogon’
Thanks Chris - ordered, along with a copy of the ‘Last Night at Scotts’ which I’ve wanted for a while. Absolutely no rush, it arrives when it arrives..
I was spinning my Hat-Art Rossini LPs a bit earlier (excellent) in the belief that the CD you mention was the same thing. The LPs are the ‘live’ version whereas this offer looks to be for a studio recording. Looks like I need to stick an order in.
Yes, acoustic-wise it was a bit of a boomy cavern, I thought they did very well under the circumstances.
Great to see such a good turn-out - 30C, the Westbrook concert and that cricket miracle against the Aussies, doesn’t get any better .
