  1. As JAW said in an earlier post, for Mosaic to return to vinyl would probably be a non-starter. They are no longer geared up for it and the economics of it wouldn’t work. As big a fan as I am of their LP sets, they likely made the right judgement call. Let’s not forget that this is a 2 to 3 person operation and I’m not sure if these are even full time. They are not Craft or Blue Note Tone Poet, with their organisational/logistics scale and depth.
  2. Welcome news - it’s a great set, for sure. I was confused by the wording at first too but I’d agree that it implies 3,500 copies total.
  3. I reckon that there is a good chance that this one will eventually appear under the Tone Poet series. I have a Pacific Jazz copy but the preference is probably for the Mosaic tracks covering this one.
  4. I was underwhelmed by this one too. Also by the Mobley. Didn’t tell me much that I didn’t already know.
  5. CD2. So much great music in this box, never heard ‘Trumpet Battle’ sound so good.
  6. I haven’t heard the Tristano set yet so can’t comment with regard to the sound quality. From a personal perspective, I don’t agree with the rest of your post - but maybe that’s me. Without Mosaic putting out their sets, it would be a lesser world.
  7. Finally arrived - CD1 and will be working my way through the set this afternoon. Impressed with the clear sound.
  8. UK green label. With a classic performance of ‘Prince Albert’. Next up - for my money, one of the greatest 3LP sets ever issued. UK Vogue
  9. LP copy is ‘in the mail’. Looking forward !
  10. UK PRT pressing First time I realised that the art was the back end of a motor bike. Doh !
  11. It’s all a case of pragmatic judgement calls in the end, I guess. Otherwise some of these sets would be like Commodore Vols 1 to 3 and beyond ! 😀
  12. With regard to the B&W set - that is already a BIG set, so where do you stop. They were correct to focus on jazz content and curb the ‘more R&B’ IMO. A pragmatic judgement call - after all, it has to sell. Agree with regard to the Jutta set and the point made about Mosaic ‘policy’ with this type of set.
  13. I’ve got that one on vinyl which I bought in the early 80s. Haven’t played it for years - will dig it out tomorrow. It’s a pleasant listen.
  14. Interesting little article from around the time that they opened in Kings Cross.
  15. I really need to dig that Mingus set out for an overdue relisten. No doubt though it would get ejected next week as the new JATP set and the Tristano should finally arrive in the mail on Tuesday. Barring Acts of God, earthquakes, PO strikes etc.
  16. The great thing is that this Arkestra recording is both accessible and adventurous. For the first time also I can see a very direct link between Tapscott’s work and that of Tadd Dameron - both ‘arranger’s piano’ and memorable arrangements by a band with unusual instrumentation that sounds bigger than it really is. Helped along by the fact that he covers ‘If You Could See Me Now’ on CD2, a really fine trio performance. Noticed that Tapscott is credited as playing ‘spinet piano’. When I saw that I had a vision of an 18th Century plucked instrument a la Mozart, which made no sense. I see now though that in the US, spinet pianos refer to a type of small upright.
  17. With regard to the Holocaust/war crimes, I recommend this book, an outstanding read. Particularly chilling as it is highly probable that the individual concerned will have checked my rail ticket at London Bridge station, based on the timeframe concerned. He effectively hid from sight.
  18. Sad news, RIP. Hugely influential on that ‘CTI sound’.
  19. German Metronome reissue
  20. The RSD mono version. Sounds great - the Hoffman Board hype is justified in this case. Isn’t that the one that came out as part of ‘Paul Horn In India’ Blue Note twofer? Will have to dig it out.
  21. Maybe if there is enough demand, Gearbox might put this out on multiple CDs. They have done archival CD issues in the past e.g. the Buddy Rich ‘Just In Time’. Interested parties might want to email them.
  22. Found 3 new copies from this series for a few pounds last week for some Summer reading. Even Alan at Jazz House Records seems to get mentioned in the stories !
  23. I find this one a bit disappointing. Yusef sounds good and ‘Belle Isle’ grooves very nicely (but not long enough). Too much of the Atlantic ‘chug chug’ guitar for me though.
