Lee Morgan 'The Gigolo' (BN Liberty blue/white)

Mine is a UK pressing, which I think was put out by UK CBS. Gave it a good listen cranked up and the sonics are absolutely excellent, with low noise floor. A very under-rated Thad & Mel album IMO.

Abouyt 1996/97 I think - when the Bruce Lundvall era Blue Note was on a roll and the Conn reissue series was at its height.

That Blue Note documentary was one of the most maddening jazz docs ever - storyline jumped all over the place as if the producer had ADD. On the other hand, it was interesting to hear from Alfred Lion's wife/former wife and there were some pricecless interview clips of some sadly now departed musicians. Not to mention footage of M. Cuscuna interviewed in the Mosaic warehouse surrounded by black boxes ! Why the heck was the speed of the Brubeck 625 sound all over the place, when this one had supposedly been 'restored'? Jeez....!

Let's hope ! Wasn't there also talk of a Wayne Shorter documentary? They were filming part of that at the Barbican performance a year or so back and I have been waiting for mention of that one ever since.

The Wynton concert was pretty good I thought (and I'm no major fan) - some nice arrangements of Blue Note Material, well played and enthusiastically received by the burghers of Harrogate. anyone notice that arrangement of Redd/McLean 'The Thespian' on the music stand - wish they had broadcast that. I guess that this couple of days is what counts as BBC4s 'jazz feature' offering to us plebs for this year. Minimum advance warning, low profile, no new Jazz 625s etc. Why the heck didn't they get round to broadcasting the Tubby Hayes stuff that is supposedly in the vault?

More jazz on BBC4 tonight. Wynton and LCO play Blue Note in Harrogate (!) and tomorrow night - the Blue Note Records documentary and another run for Brubeck's 'Jazz 625'. Some interesting tune selections from Wynton and co - Inner Urge, Riot, Blues Walk..

Interesting. That's the first time I had heard that some of the original tapes were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. How much/what has been lost?

There is speculation out there that whoever bought the Mobley thought he/she was buying in $US instead of £GB.

I was there on Sunday - well worth the trip. Nice book as well (which I restrained from buying). Change of plan - looks iffy weatherwise out there today so I'll defer it. Just down the road so no big deal and it looks as if it is 'on' until September. Good to hear that it lives up to expectations though and I might even be tempted to get the book !

I'll stick with my Mobley Mosaic vinyl ! Interestingly, it is mentioned in this month's 'Record Collector; in their ebay watch section listing high value sales. Suggests legit? . Having said that, a copy of Larry Young 'Unity' also "sold" around the same time for this magic $7800 amount. So I would be inclined to file this one along with tulip bulbs..

That is an absolutely fantastic clip - what a shame that a full Beeb archive version in quality video and sound isn't available. I guess we are fortunate that it survived in any form though.. Talking of Ronnies and Big Bands - I was in the audience around 1980-ish during a performance of 30 minutes by either Woody Herman or Buddy Rich (pretty sure it was Herman but it was a long time ago) just before the main sets, introduced by RS, which was broadcast live on BBC2. To the best of my knowledge, it has never, ever been repeated. John Surman/John Warren 'Tales of the Algonquin'?

That 'Tyger' was a bit of a pig to find on vinyl but it is pretty nice. Agree that the Westbrook solo recital at The Barbican (Conservatory) back in 2005 was a gem. I think he did a number or two from 'On Duke's Birthday'. Always enjoy it when he does the occasional solo piano feature as part of the regular gigs.
